One thing to note about Gannon is that he’s still a young DC. He obviously had a system that has a decent floor with good players. But he needs to prove he can actually provide a sliver of resistance against top quarterbacks. I’m not sure what he can do to improve in this area, but it’s not out of the question that he can learn and adapt.

Do we have that much time?

He stinks - I do not see how he can be brought back.

Getting ready to walk out the door to head to the stadium. Same thing I said five years ago....when I get home, I'm either going to be really depressed or extremely jubilant. Later gents.

Well we double the incompletions and lowered his QB rating by 5. Baby steps

The Eagles won’t be back there for awhile unfortunately.  This was their shot and they blew it.  At least we’ll always have SB 52

It's hard to see an immediate return to the SB next year, but anyone claiming clairvoyance beyond 2024, when so many things can happen, it's just not savvy.

We got one of the best GMs and QB in the league. Start filling in the rest of the pieces starting from today and let's see where the whirlwind takes us.

Edit: Part of this does rely on Gannon Fing off. Otherwise it will certainly feel bleaker...

I’d rather have a veteran DC that can build up the young kids and put them in positions of strength. I think an issue this year we played to what Gannon wanted to do, what he knows best and his comfortable zone. and less to the strengths of some of the personnel we had

Who would you look at?

Mike Zimmer? Ed Donatel? Lovie Smith? There really isnt anyone out there right now that would have been great. Wilks, Flores, and Fangio are already on new teams.

I think you would have to find an aggressive position coach, regardless of age. I would love for them to talk to Jarod Mayo or Chris Hewitt from Baltimore.

Yeah the cardinals put them in a crap position with waiting til after the Super Bowl to finally talk to Gannon. If it was known way prior and they did the interview during the wild card weekend i think fangio likely waits to make a decision to see if the cardinals hire Gannon. Instead they didn’t and it basically hurt the eagles in getting any one of those guys you mentioned.

Who else are we hiring at this point?

Considering what he did with one of the most stacked defensive units in the league? Plus the offense blowing out teams usually. It almost can't get worse.

Just get a retread like Zimmer in here.  There's no point "developing" Jonathan Gannon since he has one foot out the door already.  We're best rid of him now.

Oh, it absolutely could.  Remove talent and have a bad scheme and it will be worse... far worse.

So would I. I mean I get giving Dennard a chance, but they need a new vision for defense here, especially because there will be a lot of turnover.

I agree, I just think they will give Dennard an interview and seriously consider him. But again, I don't even know what Dennard's vision is. Maybe he has a different and fresh vision.

That sucks.

This is the issue I see.

Maybe he can learn and adapt, but we don’t really have time for that. We have a great young QB, a great OL with a couple players with 1-3 years left, and a defense that’s going to need a makeover because of impending free agents.

We need to get a proven DC in here who can put together a championship level defense quickly.

If Gannon was THAT overmatched, I don’t think we have the luxury of finding out if he can improve. The defense didn’t just get steamrolled, the looked unorganized and inept. It wasn’t like we had guys in the right places and the Chiefs just made great plays — they were running unmarked all game long.

pretty amazing stats about the second half,

mahomes had 1 incompletion in the 2nd half.

Chiefs converted every 3rd down besides the kneel down in the second half.

I’m back and forth on who I think had the better Super Bowl. Foles or Hurts. Both were all time great performances

I’ve refused to give Hurts crap for the fumble, but that separates Foles from Hurts in the SB comp.

I've already stated that and looking deeper as I've tried ive stated the way the eagles defense is set up it is dependent on getting g pressure from 4 man and they did that better all year than any other team and better than any team in something like the last 30 years.

Negate that ability and it significantly has a trickle down effect in the whole defense team and game.

KC defense against hurts isn't as reliant on creating pressure with 4 man fronts it is more reliant in containing hurts in the pocket not over rushing or getting up field too quick and leaving him rush lanes

Mush rushing is pretty easy when it's slippery or at least less difficult than an upfield speed rush

Reddicks Game is all about speed and quickness off the edge, that was totally nullified by the field.

One can say as you have that that same applies to the chiefs but again the eagles defense is predicated in getting pressure with 4 to negatively affect the QB, where as KCs was contain hurts run ability which is why he was running up the middle so much as the KC edges were just parked. On the edges containing.

The field conditions unfortunately we're unfavorable to the way the eagles play defense and not as much as the way the chiefs defended hurts.

Id argue the debate should be how much so, not whether it did or not as I clearly think it did .

So ?

They were able to employ their defensive philosophies while we were not?

I don't want to argue, Ute. just saying the field was level, it was more about the scheme. Gannon called a **** game and it cost us a shot at the Lombardi...Spags had it goin on...Gannon, not so much...

I'm done here....with respect.:Eagle_smiley:

Yup.

Hurts played a great game, but there’s no getting around the fact that he gifted the Chiefs 7 points with a totally unforced error.

I personally find Olsen completely boring. I felt last night's game lacked any gravitas from the booth.

100% Amazon should buy him out. Michaels-Olsen would be the best booth in football

Our current scheme is: Our guys are better than your guys, so they'll beat you more often than not. So if that doesn't happen the defense collapses. Two years, infinitely better talent and the defensive results are near identical.

I'm not sure I need to see another year of Gannon with less talent. His in-game adjustments are basically non-existent or way too late.

How many teams are going to copy the rugby scrum play next year after seeing 1 yard become virtually automatic?

At least half the NFL right?

We’ll have to see what it is exactly. He’ll be the most prepared color commentator ever

I'd say this year's results were far better.  I'm in no way defending Gannon, my only point is... it can get worse.
