Fair enough. I was not trying to make a point that it will be dead but rather it could become quite diminished. Boxing as an example, maybe.

It's possible it could be diminished if it loses popularity. But I think the reason other sports have diminished is because football is just that freaking good and exciting. Football has overtaken the popularity of those sports. And I know that's purely subjective, but people just love the game of football. I don't think the love of football is going anywhere, I could see the desire for people to play it decline. Well actually, I can't even see that. Because the MMA is more popular than ever and that's a sport where you literally beat the crap out of your opponent. The fame and the money that accompanies football will always have people lining up. Where I could see it being affected is parents not allowing their kids playing it, thus forcing them into other sports at a young age. Maybe that has an impact at some point, but that seems like such a long process, and in such a populated country, I can't see enough parents banning their kids from playing it to impact the livelihood of the sport.

Getting ready to walk out the door to head to the stadium. Same thing I said five years ago....when I get home, I'm either going to be really depressed or extremely jubilant. Later gents.

I remember watching that ppv and couldn’t believe when the news came out that they continued that event

Just reporting what on the opinion of a veteran paramedic/firefighter/police officer...hoping for the best obviously

It was just an overly negative perspective.  ECMO was a completely out of left field assumption that makes no sense for someone who was widely reported to have stabilized.  And no reason to say he won’t make it through the night.

If he WERE on ECMO (which would be terrible), that’s sort of automatically stabilizing.  So there would be almost no way he wouldn’t make it through the night.  Almost mutually incongruent.

Maybe so but he sees the real real every day in Albuquerque.  But, yes, he is no doctor.  No trying to be pessimistic or not.  Just an observation.

Not trying to debate or anything.  Feel bad for everyone involved and praying hard for Hamlin.  I think everyone is 100%

Still the most bizarre thing I’ve ever watched on TV and I was 11 at the time. They had the broadcasters announce the death live on PPV and the event went on without a hitch. Jeff Jarrett, a friend of Owen’s, had the match after the incident and was in tears while in the ring performing. No one knew if it was real or a part of the show.

I agree brother. I think we’re saying the same thing. Could they play tomorrow for that matter?  Sure. But don’t put that burden on them.

Yup!  We've both seen a big time 'org' fumble handling their people after.  I hope the NFL does right by them and allows them whatever they need. It's a troubling thing to have that 'I'm not superman moment' (and humbling).  Injuries happen, but stuff like this isn't part of the Rookie Symposium or any part of football growing up for almost if not all of them.  Take care of those kids and that staff.  Compartmentalization only goes so far before that ugly head comes to light.  I've retyped this a bunch of times trying to get the words right and keep it short.

My 15 year old is 6'1 and can dunk a basketball with two hands so pretty athletic. He has asked me numerous times to play football this year and I have told him no.

I just do not see it being worth it, long term

What I see at schools, generalization here, is that lower socioeconomic families are still fine with their kids playing football for access to college/financial reward reasons we all know about. Families that are in higher income brackets have begun to move away from contact football (not flag football which seems to be gaining in participation) and toward other sports. Every year, USA Lacrosse makes a pitch to expand and this would be in the space football occupies (there are only so many fields on which to practice after school). I love football. It is my favorite spectator sport but there are things in the wind. I would say Esports in the number one threat, as silly as that sounds.

No way to say it right man but I get it. Always around if you ever need to shoot the crap

Disappointed in the lack of an update about some spectacular and reassuring progress…

But I also suspect the family and agent don’t want to torture themselves with blow by blow updates.  That is excruciating in health care with sick patients with evolving problems who get multiple tests.

Defined time points with comprehensive updates.  More efficient, less emotionally taxing.

I just think those are the wrong people to have in the meeting.  Get the people traumatized by tonight and the people who stand to lose the most in the seeding battle in the same (virtual) room and let them have a voice.

If nothing else, it’s good for CYA.

This feels more like a crisis management and PR strategy call to handle the news cycle tomorrow than any sort of update coming.

All Potential Options, regardless of likelihood:

- Call it a tie.

- Call it a No Contest and use win % to determine seeding.

- Reschedule the game tomorrow or the day after.

- Push the entire schedule back 1 week, have only BUF/CIN play this weekend.

What else?

Those are the only 2 viable options.

God forbid, if the worst case scenario happens with Hamlin over the next day or two..., the NFL could come under pressure to cancel next week and push it to the week after, still very much unlikely, but that's the only scenario where a push could happen.

This guy is awesome. He was 100% accurate on the Zach Miller knee injury in preseason and he is always respectful.

I'm not in love with him being fairly certain as opposed to saying its one possibility but its a good analysis of that freak accident if that's what it was.

This conference call reeks of PR spin. We all saw the players on the field warming up after the fact. We saw Diggs trying to rally the team to play. Just stop.

Hoping for the best for Hamlin.  Hoping for the best for the players involved, all of the NFL players and their families.  To us it is just a game but to them is a much more dangerous proposition.  Even those who some fans call bums put it on the line every week for our entertainment.  Yeah, some are paid handsomely and there are many that are not but all deserve our respect for what they do.
