MD question: is this normal progress due to sedation?

From the chatter, it sounds like he’s been in a hypothermic cooling protocol following cardiac arrest.

In patients with ROSC after cardiac arrest that had an inadequate mental status to breathe spontaneously, they are placed in a medically induced coma and hypothermic state for at least 24 hours.

It’s not ideal that he went into this pathway as opposed to just instantly breathing on his own and being "fine,” but it’s certainly better than the other alternative.

The fact that he’s actively improving his ventilator settings (100% O2 is not good)…is very good.  So it’s good news.

Getting ready to walk out the door to head to the stadium. Same thing I said five years ago....when I get home, I'm either going to be really depressed or extremely jubilant. Later gents.

I’m pretty sure Shannon just had his first grandchild like 4 days ago and that was already known he wasn’t gonna be there on tuesdays show.

That may be… But couldn’t he have easily just quashed all the rumors by saying that’s the reason for his absence?

Just have every team select one representative and have a Royal Rumble.

Davis? Mailata? Covey? Suh?

One of them can win it all.

I pick Covey. That kid gets right up every time after being Fing annihilated on the field.

Side note: been a little distracted the past week or so. What’s the current word on Hurts playing Sunday? Scored lower level tix and am hoping to see him light up the Giants backups.

well written and sums up the entire situation.  Almost nothing else to say.

The unique thing here is that this is (still exceptionally rare) more typical in sports with projectiles…not violent body contact sports.

Really informative, thank you.  I'm glad to hear a Dr. say stop jumping to any conclusions because we don't know anything yet.

From the standpoint of the sport of football, the last question is imperative.  It was such a routine play, to call for any changes to how football is played or the protection the players wear on the field would be purely a reactionary decision with no benefit.  This isn't massive head injury where continued helmet development might reduce the impact and probability of injury, nor is it a form tackling or technique issue.

This appears to be a 1 in a million type of injury that just happened to happen on MNF.  If this happens in a HS game, we probably don't hear about it.  If it happens at a D3 game, it might be brought up on College Gameday.  This was the NFL on it's brightest stage.  They need to be rational in all decisions made...and I say this with no disrespect or disregard to the severity of Hamlin's injury and his continued battle to stay alive.

Aside from your medical profession, as a fan, what are your hopes and expectations moving forward?

Dr. Baggish: The only thing I can say I hope this does is reinforce medical teams that they need to be ready for unexpected catastrophe. I don't anticipate and wouldn't be the right person to suggest any policy change or additional changes in the way the sport is played. But I hope it's not a knee-jerk reaction if that's the case, because oftentimes it's worse to change policies in knee-jerk fashion based on one problem. ... First and foremost, of course, my hope is the young man recovers fully. And as a fan who also happens to be a doctor, I'm cognizant of the risk these athletes assume when they decide to play these sports, and I support their decisions to do so, but it's always sad when something like this occurs.

Just to keep my streak for watching all Eagles games intact, I decided to watch the first half tonight.

* Minshew stunk and the OL did him no favors. It doesn’t appear like there were open WRs. Mailata overset on on Granderson like he was some kind of speed rusher. Awful.

* Seemed like the plan was to locate Kyzir White in zone coverage and attack. He was lost.

* Goedert needed to make that catch at the end of the first half. Maybe the only good throw by Minshew in the first 30 minutes.

* Even when we got a third down stop we gave up 15 yards on third and 20, and the Saints got a long FG, which of course they made.

* Milton Williams really is coming on. What a play at the GL to potentially save a TD.

* Davis seemed OK. Nothing great. Blew up one run play but unfortunately Kamara was able to wriggled forward for a gain of 4. He plays too high still.

That show exists based on the drama... so squashing the drama would be very off brand.

That's excellent news and clear signs of progression.  BUT, needing 100% O2 is very bad so we're not starting from a strong place.  Nor is that an indication of what kind of ventilator settings he's on ei, how much support they need to give his body to actually take breaths.

So it's good, but a very incomplete picture prognostically.

I'm guessing it doesn't help know if there is brain damage as well

Yup.   Skip is ridiculous, but last night... his tweet was one of the least obnoxious things he's said.  Maybe he didn't say it well, but it wasn't as bad as they are saying.

I was part of the burn him crew when I first saw it...I've since cooled.  The wording was incredibly poor, timing even worse...but the dude is known to just fire off tweets and videos drunk.

What Shefter said after Dwayne Haskins died was worse, and nothing happened to him.

The fact that he wasn't breathing spontaneously certainly raises that risk.  But as far as the severity or reversibility? We likely won't know that for awhile. The fact that they seemingly got his heart restarted quickly is positive though.

I would be guessing here, but I suspect they also induced therapeutic hypothermia pretty quickly as well knowing it would limit brain damage from possible lack of oxygenation in the absence of circulation and respiration.

This wasnt at the Bills stadium, but remember they were the first team to do this when they had that catastrophic neck injury. Im sure the whole NFL is versed in the procedure now, but still. Youd expect if the Bills doctors were there, it may raise the chances that it happened. They were the pioneers of that technique.

I did see a tweet mention they had an IV in him on the field. They could have got those cold fluids pumping right away too.

What'd he say?

My 2 year CPR cert just expired. Is it still 30 compressions?

Disagree this was while the kid was still down wasnt it? Haskins was dead and all shefter said was that he was a journeyman qb or something which was factually correct

It was after they took him to the hospital and there was that weird limbo period.

Schefter basically said he was a bust who struggled to make it in the NFL.

It’s still more insensitive to announce someone’s death as basically being a failure vs wondering out loud how the NFL would reschedule a game.

Just saw the interview with his uncle.  He said he had to be resuscitated twice.  Once on the field and once at the hospital.
