People have been expressing their disappointment with Jordan Davis lately, and I can't disagree, although I'm not sure he's really had the opportunity lately. That said, I went back and looked at that part of the draft and the 14-20 range really was a dead zone for that draft. Honestly outside the top 10, that first round was really unimpressive.

It's frustrating, because Davis has done exactly what he was supposed to. He was getting better as a pass-rusher before he got hurt against Pittsburgh. HIs best game in the return was against Dallas, then he got concussed. The tools are there.

The good news is that a lot of big DTs struggle early. Dexter Lawrence, Leonard Williams, Quinnen Williams etc. Just wish we could have seen more sack production from Davis.

Getting ready to walk out the door to head to the stadium. Same thing I said five years ago....when I get home, I'm either going to be really depressed or extremely jubilant. Later gents.

I also think people underestimate how much of a project Davis was. He’s an enormous human being with athleticism which shouldn’t be possible at his size, but he was very far from a finished product. He’s going to need to work on his conditioning and pass rush, and that’s going to take a year or two.

Congrats guys, the Album Hit #1.  OMG.

Who are those "bottom five guys"?

Sermon, Book, Kyron Johnson, Covey and Robinson. Covey seems very expendable since we can call Ward up to return punts.

Once a year or so Belichick would have the Pats rush 40 times and pass less than 20 and they'd grind their way to a 16-10 victory.  I thought about going that route in the Bears game and definitely wanted that against the offensively challenged Saints.  We have the team (likely with Sermon in there as a 4th RB and go lite on another position for a game) and the nasty "get the W" attitude to do that.

Having said that, I don't think that is the right approach for tomorrow.  However, I would like to see it next year when the opportunity arises.

edit: ...and I don't mean QB runs.  Straight hand offs.

Russ is 34. Richardson would be 25 even after 4 years. Monumental difference.

As would be their body of work

While Covey is far from being an All-Pro punt returner, he still provides at least a little juice while Ward may only make sense if 2 WRs get hurt. But at that point we’re probably screwed anyway so might as well see what Covey can do on offense.

With Sweat/Quinn out, we should be using more 4-3 looks with Cox or Williams at DE. This is the type of game to give Jordan Davis 25-30 snaps. Watch him get 15.

He’ll probably play less. In their typical alignment, there is more of a role for heavy utilization of DTs.  If they go 4-3, Davis wont come off the sidelines.

No surprise

I’ll say upfront I think Hurts will play tomorrow and have limited effects of the shoulder injury.  Dr David Chao said right after he was injured that it’s something a QB can, and does, play through if they need to go.  They normally get a needle before the game to eliminate the pain.

Having said that, if Hurts cannot go tomorrow and/or his playoff performance is compromised by the injury, then the Eagles have a serious decision to make going forward.  We’ve seen in BAL that Lamar Jackson has been unavailable at the end of the season the last two years missing significant time with injury.  Very few people mention that Hurts was compromised at the end of last season due to his ankle injury, which required surgery to repair after the season.

If Hurts loses his effectiveness in both of his first two years as starting QB by the time the playoffs come around, how do the Eagles sign him to an extension?  The Ravens are at a point now where most observers believe Jackson will be franchise tagged after this year, rather than extended.  Do the Eagles assume a risk the Ravens aren’t prepared to with their QB?

The Eagles gave an extension to Wentz despite durability concerns and it turned out badly after further injury/durability issues.

Not really about Covey, but more "which guys would I cut to make room for a punter."

My thinking is that Covey doesn't really offer anything but pubt return duties, so if I absolutely had to keep the other four, I would roll with Ward for a game and hope Covey would get through waivers rather than having Elliot punt and Covey hold on field goals.

True… But it really doesn’t take that long to raise a players draft value.

For instance, if the 49ers were to trade Purdy in the off-season, what would they get for him?

the only appeal for that job is that they are getting bryce young. I guess no state tax too. Cause that franchise is a dumpster fire and willing to fire you after a season as it would be the second time in two years.

Eh, I never really expected anything at all in year 1. With his speed/athleticism at his size the pick was a no brainer and I trust the Eagles to develop DTs. Look at the jump Milton Williams made from year 1 to 2. Imagine if a 6’6 340lb man that runs a 4.7 can make that improvement.

I’m hopeful they can turn Davis into an upper middle class version of Haloti Ngata

They got bullied by the outrage mob into not hiring Gannon and this is the end result. Lesson: do what you want as an organization and stop letting internet outrage dictate your order of business.

The appeal of that job is they’ll still be making a few million more than any coordinator job. An NFL head coaching gig is 1/32 in the world. It’s still a great opportunity no matter how bad the disfunction is

What is the REAL downside of having Elliot punt and Covey hold?  There is imaginary downside I agree, but the real risk of any meaningful downside is less than 0.001%.

Yeah if i were a hot coordinator like daboll was, I’m waiting to take a different job because of that dysfunction. It’s why daboll didn’t leave Buffalo until last offseason.

The downside is an injury to Elliot doing something that he doesn't normally do, and then we go into the playoffs with a new placekicker and punter.

Also, Dicker the Kicker is no longer available.

Once upon a time, Andy Reid had this similar thought process on... what's the REAL downside of having Greg Lewis be the punt returner?  We know how that turned out, don't we?

Simple answer... you don't screw around with ST.  It costs you in the long run.

That may be true for one game, but we aren't going into the playoffs with a place kicker as our punter, so if we have to add a guy to the roster after this week, i am not sure I see the benefit of waiting.

@LeanMeanGM

Eagles 29

Giants 14

Bonus: Giants starters score a TD on their first drive.
