Getting ready to walk out the door to head to the stadium. Same thing I said five years ago....when I get home, I'm either going to be really depressed or extremely jubilant. Later gents.

No, just no.  Only in an emergency.  Makes no sense otherwise.

Personally, I don’t like his type of defense

This is the issue for most of us.  Historically, our identity overall has been aggressive D and he just doesn't fit that bill.  Hard to argue with the overall results though.

I have zero clue why in gods name he ever goes to that crap zone that allows not only 95% completion rates but allows a 3rd and 30 for a first down.  Just stop it!

The biggest issue I have with Gannons scheme is that it does not pair well with a potent offense like the Eagles.

Even if they don’t give up a ton of points, the long sustained drives (even the ones that end in FGs or no points at all) take away opportunity for the offense to score.

On the flip side, I get that he doesn’t want teams hitting big plays, but there has to be quicker adjustments made when teams are successfully driving the length of the field and possessing the ball for chunks of the game.

Last week they didn’t adjust until halftime, that’s way too late.

Congratulations to Doug and the Jags on making the playoff.  Turning the team around in one season is an accomplishment, Doug.  As a coach, Doug is a good one and won a SB with our team.  Willing to go on 4th down bears his finger print and it is getting popular among other teams.

It has been absolutely horrible lately.  Maybe losing CJGJ and Maddox has just been too much.

I guess it’s just me, but I think Gannon has done an outstanding job with the Eagles. Opposing teams don’t score that much on us, and they don’t gain a lot of yards either.

Yep.  People are weird.

I'm actually a big Jim Jackson fan.  I think he does a great job narrating the Flyers games.

JJ is good.  Gene was better.

Just what they need…another defensive coach to groom Bryce Young (or whichever QB they pick)

He'll complete 80% of his passes in practice though.

I love listening to Mike Tirico do a game.  In college, Gus Johnson is near perfection.   No one is Keith Jackson though... woah Nelly!

And all time... it would be hard to find a better duo than prime Pat Summerall and John Madden.

I didn't really get to experience hearing him unfortunately.

Gene was great. Total ball of energy. We have been spoiled historically with Gene, Harry, and Merrill.

If the Saints lose today, what is the best possible pick we can end up with… Is it 9th or 10th?

Whenever we got up against a good offense, we get lit up. We're a 10th ranked defense, with a defensive roster that is probably better than 10th. Finally, the way Gannon plays hurts the offense as it limits their possessions. That's fine if you had a bad offense, but we have a top 5 offense. We should want more possessions for both teams, not less.

I agree.  I don’t understand where the "hate” comes from.  There were some mistakes made, questionable calls, etc (which happens with every defense in the NFL).  But overall, this defense has been very good.

When you lose 2 guys playing at a very high level (CJGJ even at an All-Pro level), yes, any defense will suffer.

That said, the defense has still been able to keep most games very close, despite losing those guys.

Zumov is still my favorite.  Growing up with Zumov narrating Iverson was the perfect combination for my teenage/20 year old Sixers fandom and I was hooked.  I still just can't get in to Sixers games with Kate Scott.

Merrill is losing it unfortunately and I haven't even attempted to listen to the Eagles broadcast this year.  Zumov went out on top and in great shape.  Merrill may still be with it in every day life and on the golf course but it can be painful at times with him and Mike.

Yeah, Merrill has really slowed down over the last decade.  He is on fumes now but gets a free pass given his history.  Might be time to have him do parts of a game or something.  They have exhausted all tactics it would seem.

I wasn't listening much to the Sixers during the Zumoff era but when I did I liked him, yes.

I'll give Fangio credit for coming up with the scheme, I'll give credit to Howie for collecting a really good roster to support that scheme; but I'm not going to describe Gannon as innovative and I haven't seen much evidence yet that he can develop young players.  My concern is that the Gannon defense requires a lot of talent to work because it doesn't do much/adjust much to cover for weaknesses. An example is when JD went down with an ankle injury, suddenly the D was thrown into crisis as it couldn't stop the run... who solved that problem?  Against DAL we were down CGJ and Maddox, and were picked apart in zone/middle of the field... I guess we're just waiting for those guys to come back, right?  Furthermore, my concern is that we are sitting on a talent bubble - that is going to pop next season when we lose a handful of free agents (or this season if the recent bad injury luck continues) and we are going to return to that dreck that we had to watch in 2021.  Also, that is where the development of young talent comes in - as I expect that we'll be leaning on a lot of young players next year... only thing I can say there is Gannon brings on those guys slooow.  Granted Gannon is doing better than others - I believe SD, GB and MIN run the same defense and they're garbage (or maybe we are 1-2 players away from that).

If Gannon goes to HOU, I expect a Brandon Staley 2.0 situation w/o Justin Herbert... why would you bring in a defensive HC with a fairly simple, copy&paste defense that if fed average talent performs badly?  CEO type?  What does that mean... he finds somebody else with the ideas?

I like Gannon but am not concerned if he needs to be replaced.  Would prefer an older guy like Fangio who isn’t going to leave to be a head coach in a couple years.

Or even our old friend gym shorts…

He'd have a much easier time if he didn't have to juggle the sponsorships so much.  Every play seems like it was sponsored by someone... starting lineups from Dietz and Watson, this first down sponsored by First Trust Bank, Second down sponsored by Sovereign Bank.  This TV timeout has been sponsored by Vitamin Water.   They pimp out every literal second of the broadcast, so when you listen to Merrill, there seems to be an equal amount of time devoted to advertising as there does game coverage.  Meanwhile, you listen to a Westwood One broadcast, and every now and then they throw in a "this second quarter is sponsored by Somebody"... and then they go right back to focusing on the game.

yeah, that's part of it.  I remember when it all started with some Matt Blatt Auto Splat (paraphrasing what it actually way) back in the 90s.  Watching the Merrill Cam after the games, it's like a ballet in that small booth.  The old man spotter behind him is constantly handing him next sponsor to read off or the roster so Merrill can get a name wrong anyway.  It's way too much, but that's also sports today.  Corporate.
