Looking it up, there still was never a clear picture of what was told to Goodell in that meeting. I may have been remembering the statement from his lawyers that downplayed the incident, but suffice it to say, the situation was far more complicated than "the NFL only cares if there's video."

Feb. 15: Rice and Palmer arrested

News broke that Rice had been arrested, charged and released from jail on simple assault charges, along with Palmer. It was known at the time that two had gotten into a fight at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, though details of the altercation were not clear. Rice's attorney described the incident as a "minor physical altercation."

...

What did Rice tell the NFL about the incident?

Peter King, on July 25, gave a detailed summary of who was in the room that day and what was said. From King's report:

Rice's wife, a source said, made a moving and apparently convincing case to Goodell ... that the incident in the hotel elevator was a one-time event, and nothing physical had happened in their relationship before or since. She urged Goodell, the source said, to not ruin Rice's image and career with his sanctions.

The NFL says they did not see the full video of the incident, and there are conflicting reports about what Rice told them. In an interview with CBS after the second tape was released, Goodell said that Rice was "ambiguous" in recounting the event.

In a letter to the NFLPA on Sep. 12, Goodell said that Rice gave a "starkly different" version of events than what was revealed on the second tape released by TMZ.

Ozzie Newsome said on Sep. 10 that Rice "didn't lie" to him about what was on the video. A report from Ed Werder at ESPN said that Rice gave the Ravens a version of the event consistent with what was on the tape.

Later reports contradicted Goodell's claim. ESPN's Outside the Lines talked to four sources who said that Rice was honest with Goodell about what happened.

I think there's a bit of truth to what you're saying, but the Rice case was a bit more complicated than what you're implying. If I recall, the initial report was that there was an altercation and Rice apparently lied to Goodell (or at least wasn't as forthcoming about what really happened.) Then when the video was released, the truth came to light and the NFL (or the team) had more information to act on and so they did.

The whole thing about different actions when there's video is for a reason, the video removes any semblance of doubt in most cases. So it's not that they don't care unless there's video, it's that they have far less credible information to go on.

See above

Both Ozzie and Rice's fiancee downplayed the incident to Goodell (she knew where her bread was buttered).  The league ruled appropriately based on the information they were given at the time.  When more evidence came to light, they amended their ruling accordingly.

As far as cursing goes - there's a fine line between it being OK and it being way too much.  If you curse ALL THE TIME, to me you sound really dumb.

Agree. Most of us do it we just say F or **** or whatever and it's been fine for  years and good middle ground. The bottom line is people shouldn't have to choose between the forum or getting in trouble at work or reading it around kids. Anyone saying keep kids away doesn't understand they climb all over you.

and the tapes were destroyed. They cared alright.

The tapes definitely should not have been destroyed. Should've been viewed by an arbitrator or at the very least, locked in a vault and then released a decade or so later with permission from the coaches of the teams that were filmed.

To me, it's an easy decision to leave the filter on if people are bothered by curse words.  I routinely curse and have my words censored here.  I don't see anything inherently wrong with cursing in an informal message board settting but I also don't think my experience is somehow diminished when my words get filtered.  If others don't want cursing up on their screen at work or just find the language vulgar then don't log in at work let's leave the filter in place.  There's no reason to make the place worse for some.

Fixed this for you lol

The Patriots forfeited a 1st round pick and Belichick got a $500,000 fine.  I am not sure what you mean by not caring.

They should have been banned from the league for eternity and Belichick and Brady should have been fired into the sun

I actually think the Ravens come out of it looking far worse. Newsome said Rice's account matched what the video showed, which makes no sense, because they only waived him immediately after the video came out, not back when he told them what happened.

Yup hard to imagine newsome and ravens knowing full details and saying hmmm...2 games but that's what they did, stupid stuff...

Since then whole thing went down the league as a whole seems to have better mechanism put in place so they don't look like fools as they did then.

It's goodells job to protect the shield I can't imagine he or the league let this 49er guy play the next game but we'll see

I imagine 15 years from now Jerry Jones head will be in a jar on the post game press podium and he'll be saying the same thing...

Somewhat interesting PC that Shoen and Daboll gave for the Giants media.  They were asked if they wanted to bring Daniel Jones back and, while they said all the positive things, also said it will be a business decision.  When asked about Barkley they sounded far less committal.  Said they wanted him back but seemed to emphasize the cap, etc. much more.  Shoen seemed to be signaling Barkley would only be back at their price.

Ravens PC with DeCosta and Harbaugh left me with a different impression than just reading the quotes did.  Harbaugh said they were committed to Lamar "200%" and DeCosta said getting a deal done was something he wanted to "start working on right away".  Hearing them speak, though, it sounded like PR spin.  I think they're both well aware the contract isn't going to get done at all without serious movement from Lamar, and that saga will likely go the tag, refuse to sign, trade route -- IMO

My opinion is it's childish to need to express yourself using f bombs and other such language and it's totally unnecessary to get your point across. Quite frankly I'm surprised that one of our older posters is trying to push it.

Oh woe is me how will I ever be able to type my thoughts on a message board without seeing my cusswords in view.

I wouldn't go along with F Bombs being permitted. It's not language that I use in day to day life, either.

If they can do both, then they aren't limited in their vocabulary, are they?  Of course, there are far better insults for people than to merely 'cuss' at them.

Rather than calling someone a 'fa--ot' why not call them a milksop or a mollycoddle?  Those terms would actually be much more accurate anyway to what they are intending to say anyway.   Much more effective to insult someone accurately with a term that they have to go check the definition of rather than going with the much more generic and/or worn out tropes.

Personally, I’m not huge fan of cussing - for some of the same reasons as you describe.

That said, there are situations that arise - when using certain words for dramatic effect/vernacular/comedy/poetry etc can be "proper”.   But overuse can have the opposite affect, etc imo.
