Interested in your take on the most recent two draftees.  I know virtually nothing about them.

I don't have much original to add versus what has been already said collectively, and the quotes provided by various analysts.

Steen:

From a value / strategy perspective, I think I am very much in agreement with E45's general take on Steen.   No reason to overhype the pick / player, but very good reasons to appreciate the pragmatic justification and positional value / need.   The Eagles needed another swing OL for as early as THIS season (in case of injuries.)     So to take an OL with multiple years of experience, at multiple positions, from one of the best NFL feeder programs in the country (Alabama - SEC) makes alot of sense.   And the size / athleticism profile suggests that Stoutland might be able to maximize further whatever Steen has to offer.    If Steen is even just another Isaac Seumalo type (swing OG) over the next 4 years that would be a big win for the Eagles (and be a big savings on the CAP versus the cost of paying a veteran in FA).   If Steen also proves capable of playing at an acceptable NFL OT level that would be icing on the cake.

On the OL I wouldn't be surprised to see another selection from the remaining 4 picks on an athletic freak OL that is raw and might be 2+ years away from being ready to play meaningful minutes.   There is another potential roster spot open for a project OL like that.   But Steen makes perfect sense for a guy they might need to play real minutes in 2023.

Brown:

I agree with Howie's comments on Safety referred to by Bo Wulf.  It's a tricky position to evaluate and there are a number of scheme / coaching variables in play.   So many Safeties over the years (even highly drafted ones) have not exactly lived up to original / initial expectations.    Teams also can find decent S prospects later in the draft.   Some S prospects takes 2-3 years before developing into good players, and sometimes with their 2nd or 3rd team (i.e. Jordan Poyer).

I think Brown was one of the best S prospects in this draft, and I am glad the Eagles finally invested in the position.   Is he actually the BEST S in the draft?   Was he the BEST choice for the Eagles?   I don't know.   But I think Brown has the qualities to succeed in this system, and he should upgrade the position.    As a comparison, I didn't want Brian Branch, at all.   Loved him as a player at Alabama, but honestly the athletic profile and his size was so average that I just didn't want to be the team to take the risk that he would successfully transition to the NFL, and certainly I have questions he can ever be an impact S in the NFL.   I'm sure that in the NFL on the right team / right scheme Branch may be a successful NFL player.   But I think the Eagles needed a more athletic type safety in this draft, and Brown fits that profile for me.

Today is a head start on signing UDFAs, you sign the guys at the top of the list you know will get drafted, and the guys you think will slip through but you haven't been able to reach an agreement if they fall.

UDFAs the last few years:
Toth OT (2019)
Opeta OG (2019)
Stoll TE (2021)
Goodrich CB (2022)
Jobe CB (2022)
Covey WR/PR (2022)
Elliss DT (2022)
Blankenship S (2023)

Whiffed on their higher cost signings last year but found a 3rd safety.

Basically, filling out the PS and hoping 2-3 will become depth in a year.

How many open spots are left on this roster?

my second home is in Charleston area

folly beach is more laid back compared to isles of palms and sullivans island

The Eagles hit absolute home runs with their first two picks. They not only got insane value for both players, but they were able to address premium positions and positions of need.

Steen I view as a bit of a need pick with a plus. The offensive line lost a lot of depth when Isaac and Dillard left. Kelce is probably, finally, down to his last season. If nothing else they got a guy who is versatile enough to play T or G, and the left side or right side. Maybe he ends up the starting RG at some point but if he's a better version of Driscoll and the 6th OL it's not a bad pick. I tend to give the Eagles and Stoutland the benefit of the doubt with OL picks since the only one they really bombed in recent years was Dillard. Bo also said something really interesting in that there wasn't another OL drafted until the 90's, and only two more total after Steen. So obviously the Eagles and possibly the league viewed him as being by far the best OL left. I was expecting a versatile OL on day 1 or day 2 so I'm not complaining.

With Brown, to me this is another home run pick. I heard a lot about the last couple of months from multiple people on this board. Didinger and Brooks loved the pick and Brooks talked about him a lot as a potential 2nd round pick for the Eagles leading up to the draft. A lot of people had him as a top 3 S in this class. The value is certainly Carter and Smith level good, but it was definitely good value and filled a position of need. Chances are Brown is a starter at some point this year, if not from week 1 and on. Watching highlights this dude is like a heat seeking missile and always flying around to the ball whether in run support or coverage. He is also a really good blitzer. Hopefully Desai is more creative than the last guy because they can use this dude in a variety if different ways to make big plays. 6 INT's last year so the idea that he's "only a box S" is obviously BS and Howie made it a point to say that he showed at SB he can play deep.

That’s how I see it.  The eagles got the best player on the board at 9 and 30, both huge upside.  Despite DT and edge being the Eagles favorite positions to draft (and despite the departure of Hargrave), neither was exactly a need pick.  The Eagles don’t really need big snaps out of either one as rookies.

Since they swung for the fences with BPA luxury picks at 9 and 30, they had to address what, IMO, was the biggest need and concern on the team for 2023 with the next pick…OL depth.

Steen wasn’t the best or highest upside player on the board there.  Not a big value play.  But he provides versatile, experienced, reliable depth.

A draft should be diverse.  When you are an elite team that just swung for the fences with the first 2 picks, a need pick at the top of round 3 is fine.  You shouldn’t do all one or the other.

The 2 positions in which we are thinnest are WR and CB.

I want to see us to continue to take shots at those positions. Hopefully they won't start, but we need bodies there.

3 potential Xs left at WR. Hutchinson, Perry and Demus.

If we want returner, Darius Davis from TCU.

Davis is a good target if the Covey experiment is over.

Andre Carter is still on the board.

Wish we had a better sense of what the team thinks of Josh Sills. Because if he's a legitimate backup OG option, then we can focus on outside players for most of the draft.

Isn't Sills on trial for rape?

He should be available as a UDFA

Two good punters to consider as well.

Bryce Baringer and Adam Korsak

He's still on the team. They clearly like him.

Yep. Trial supposed to happen mid June.

Solak wasn't a fan of the Brown pick. Had him going in the 120s. The Eagles seem to see much higher upside than a lot of people who cover the draft. Howie last night said they saw things in the senior bowl that confirmed to them he can be a cover guy. And his athletic traits are up there.

McPhearson has looked good when he has been in the lineup.  Jobe, not so much but he was a green rookie.

McPhearson is headed in to year 3 and has shown he can be a gunner on ST but that's about it.  Since drafting him, they've traded for guys l like Tay Gowan, Josiah Scott and signed Josh Jobe as an UDFA.  McPhearson has done nothing to show he's any more capable than those minimal investment players.  If he showed an ounce of potential to be a starting outside CB, I don't think the Eagles would have committed the amount of money they did to both Slay and Bradberry for a minimum of 2 more years.  When their contracts run out, so does McPhearon, and the Eagles will still have nothing of value from him since being picked.

Those 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks the Eagles have used on defense over the last few years have had a drastic effect on how they go about FA as well as the reliance on later round picks and UDFA.

Misses on guys like K'von Wallace, Zech McPhearson, Davion Taylor, Shareef Miller, Sidney Jones, Rasul Douglas and Eric Rowe in the 2nd-4th rounds puts more pressure on 5th-7th round guys like Kyron Johnson, Tarron Jackson, JaCoby Stevens, Patrick Johnson, Marlon Tuipulotu and Shaun Bradley.  Sitting out the entire stretch of middle rounds also puts more pressure on 6th, 7th and UDFA to perform at levels they aren't capable of.

Howie LOVES to tout how good the Eagles are at finding UDFA and even gave some insight on bonuses the scouts get if their UDFA gets signed.  The flipside to that is if they could draft worth a damn in the middle rounds, or not skip the middle rounds, UDFA wouldn't be depended on as much.

still some good talent on the board i would have to consider some type of package with next years picks to possibly move up.

He's really all over the place depending where you look. No clear consensus on the guy.

Exactly how I think they plan to use him. A better and healthier Driscoll.

Nolan Smith has the intelligence and athletic ability to be a true OLB.

I’d say Milton over Cox this year but I get your point.

My best friend is a Stillers fan, and we’ve both been ecstatic the last two nights.

All comes down to how much they like Sermon. They kept him all last year for a reason.

My RBs I’m targeting today…Evan Hull, DeWayne McBride, Deneric Prince.

Charleston but I’m now back in the Philly area in Horsham. We kept our place in Charleston and VRBO it and just use it in the summer.

Hell yes to Charleston. One of my favorite places.  I’ll buy your place for $100.  Final offer.

Red’s is a Mount Pleasant staple if you have time.  Really awesome restaurant right on the water.

Turn on WIP and first caller I hear is complaining that Eagles didn't trade up in round 2 to draft the QB Levis.  Must have been DUM.
