Yes we do.

This is goofy. If we go by this measure then we don't know if Bryce Young can receive a snap in the pros yet.

We don't know if Mazi Smith can play the run.

We don't know if JSN can catch the ball.

Agreed.  But his upside value is as a chess piece that can fill multiple roles.  If they can develop him into a 3 down LB that can cover in space and also rush the passer, it's a huge advantage for our defense.

Speaking of chess, a new world champion was crowned today. The longtime champion voluntarily gave up his title last year because he was bored with defending it, and a title match was held between the next two best players. The underdog won.

C’mon, E45.  Of course Brown is being compared to Ss.  That’s what he is.  Thing is, except for height, he is superior athletically to most Ss in this draft.  That said, RAS only compares measurements.  It doesn’t measure love of ball, football IQ, instincts or technique.  All a RAS or any of the measurements do is possibly confirm what you might see on tape, on occasion.  Let’s take agility drills like 3 cone and short shuttle.  Those can confirm bend and turn.  In contrast, a great forty can show straight line speed but from a track stance. JJAW, my favorite whopping post, had a nice 40 but his 3 cone and short shuttle probably hinted on his absolute inability to stop or turn in one step.  So the RAS confirmed what we see in film.  In contrast Edwards was an UDFA because of his speed but the RAS failed to measure his football IQ/instincts. So, except for covering downfield, that 40 time had little meaning.   So here’s my point.  Brown’s RAS confirms his tape but misses on his angles and instincts too.  It also doesn’t measure his tackling, which needs some work.  Carter’s RAS confirms he is a freak as shown on tape but doesn’t measure his work ethic.  RAS (or the measurements going into it) is a tool but just that, a tool.

Carter doesn’t have a RAS…

The way some people are talking about Carter, it's like he's any normal 1st round pick. Hargrave and Carter, a "wash against the run"??? Sheesh. Did you forget who this guy is?

this is all that comes to mind when I hear chess anymore.

Last night I watched every draft picks press conference and/or zoom call again from the Eagles app. I came away impressed with all of them, but Nolan Smith and Sydney Brown stood out to me above the others. I’ve been a huge fan of them both throughout the draft process, and I truly think both of them in particular will become fan favorites. Between AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Sydney Brown, and Nolan Smith there’s going to be a crap ton of Smith/Brown jerseys at the Linc on Sundays.

Ringo did not come off cocky at all to me. Said all the right things, and talked about his work with Richard Sherman and how excited he is to be a mentee to Slay and Bradberry.

A huge number of Johnsons at this time as well.  (5)

Carter eats double teams. Hargrave was easily controlled often by O-lineman in college vs far worse competition.

Hargrave is a wonderful story and good for him getting SF to break the bank. He took his one trick (elite quickness) and used it to great success.

He was a key member of one of the greatest pass rushing lines in NFL history.

He's still no Jalen Carter on an ability level. Its like trying to say Brandon Graham is like Nick Bosa. I love BG but that's not who he is.

Bo Wulf mentioned Howie could trade for a LB before the season like they did CJGJ. I haven't looked around. Any teams that drafted or signed LBs that could have a veteran LB on the trade block?

Was Patrick Queen mentioned yesterday?

Not a lot of great options.

ILBs

  • Christian Kirksey
  • Chad Muma (blocked by 2 starters)
  • Alex Singleton, as long as Drew Sanders shows out in camp
  • Kenneth Murray Jr
  • Demario Davis, if the Saints want to get off his deal or if they have a slow start
  • Zaven Collins or Isaiah Simmons, given the Cardinals rebuild

I heard him mentioned in recent weeks not sure about yesterday.

Worth mentioning that, at the time of that post, Bradberry was not re-signed and there were rumors of releasing Slay.  They did well on those marks.

Not trying to be critical … just pointing out the progress.  Your markers were the right markers.

The amount of ****ing ans moaning from callers into WIP about the draft is absurd.  Some people just can't be satisfied.

BAL drafted Simpson in the 3rd, and I'm not sure if they gave Queen the 5th year option.

I don't think Simpson is ready, so BAL will probably hold on to Queen for the season.

Wha... didn't know WIP was aware of Jake Witt.

I wasn't wild about any WRs in this draft and I'm not ready to give up on Quez.  I think he said all the right things about his disappointing year and I'm ready to take a leap of faith there.  If it doesn't work out, then we know what we have to do in 2024.

What does concern me is what kind of offense we can run with a WR injury.  Let's be really optimistic and say that Quez steps up.  What then?  Do we have to be a 12 personnel offense?  Greg Ward in the slot?  Ugh.

Devon Allen has had an NFL year to get reacquainted with the WR position.  He was pretty good in college the one year he really played (other year was coming off an ACL).  He was green in routes because of the lack of experience. Also note in HS he was a returner as well and tore his ACL at Oregon on a kickoff return.  A year older than Ward but faster.   Another WR with a bit of speed on the roster is Tyrie Cleveland.  Bounced around the NFL a bit. I wonder if they might not also look at the XFL players a bit.  9 WRs to 17 DBs for 90 man roster seems a bit light so I expect some more WR signings.

LOL, Gannon hid from the media for all 3 days of the draft.

This is going to be fun!

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

R1 (9): DI Jalen Carter, Georgia
R1 (30): EDGE Nolan Smith, Georgia
R3 (65): OT Tyler Steen, Alabama
R3 (66): S Sydney Brown, Illinois
R4 (105): CB Kelee Ringo, Georgia
R6 (188): QB Tanner McKee, Stanford
R7 (249): DI Moro Ojomo, Texas

Day 1: Landing the No. 2 overall player on the  PFF big board at Pick 9 is a huge win for the Eagles. Carter played 392 snaps in 2022 and earned a 92.3 PFF grade that led all Power Five interior defenders. He registered 32 total pressures from 273 pass-rushing snaps. The Eagles had to give up just a 2024 fourth-round pick to make this happen.

The Eagles land the 13th overall player on the PFF big board with the 30th pick in the draft as Philadelphia retools its defensive line once again with elite talent. Smith might be undersized at 238 pounds, but he earned a 90.0 PFF run defense grade over the past two seasons and is an incredible athlete.

Day 2: Steen transferred from Vanderbilt to Alabama to finish his college career protecting No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young‘s blindside, and he earned a 74.4 pass-blocking grade over the year. Steen’s arms are under 33 inches, a common NFL threshold required to play tackle, so he may move inside at the outset. Steen was a steady riser throughout the process and is the newest student at Stoutland University in Philadelphia.

Brown is the first true safety off the board — Alabama’s Brian Branch is more of a tweener — and Philadelphia gets him right around his consensus ranking. Better yet, Brown fills a position of need, as Eagles starters Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps left the team in free agency. Brown earned a stellar 89.4 coverage grade in 2022 as a rangy deep safety who can cover a ton of ground, and his testing was off the charts. His 10-yard split, vertical jump and broad jump were all above the 90th percentile among safeties.

Day 3: The Eagles continue in their quest to recreate the back-to-back National Champion Georgia Bulldogs defense, trading up for a straight-line athlete in a very young cornerback that showed inconsistency after a breakout 2021 season. Ringo is a bit stiff moving laterally, which may have caused his drop here, but at 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds he could line up out wide or perhaps transition to safety.

McKee isn't a great athlete and won't create much outside of structure, but his size and accuracy give him potential as a developmental backup who can win from the pocket. The scheme and supporting cast did him few favors, which contributed to his underwhelming production at Stanford.

The rich get richer in Philly. Ojomo is ranked 93rd on the PFF big board. He is an excellent run defender (91.4 in 2022) who can fill two gaps up front. An improvement to his pass-rush arsenal could make him a seventh-round gem.

DRAFT GRADE: A+

I do think Branch is going to be really good. I was hoping we moved up for him in round 2, to go along with the 2 Georgia boys. That would have been the only other thing I thought would have been A++ but it would've been hard to do and sacrificing a bit too much. That easily would've costed both our 2nd plus early 3rd rounder and probably a 2nd day pick from next year. I was down on the Brown pick mostly because I really liked some other players right there and think he is undersized with some tackling issues. But he has impressive athleticism and a strong compact frame and watching his presser, how can you not like him. That may be the x-factor with what he can bring to the team. His leadership, intelligence and positive nature and off the field habits could hopefully be infectious on some of our younger guys. Moro also seems to have this type of personality as well.

You're right.  Looks like Arizona comes to Philly this year.  Oh man is Gannon going to get it.  Better keep the headset on all game long.  Going to be very loud and very unpleasant.

My favorite part of the draft:

1. Carter.  Eventual starter and rookie contributor.

1b. Smith.  Eventual starter, +/- rookie contribution.

3a. Steen.  Possible eventual starter.  Probably will have the opportunity to play a bit as a rookie.

3b. Brown.  Probable eventual starter, rookie contributor.

4. Ringo.  4th rounder with the clear raw talent and upside to develop into a starter.  May happen, may not.  Won’t play as a rookie.

6. McKee.  Projects as really nice backup.  Many have already speculated his value could increase in his time here.

7. Ojomo.  Nice value for the slot, won’t ever start here.  Not a guarantee to make the team.

4 guys that should make their way into the starting lineup, 5 with true starter upside, 3 that should contribute this year, 6 of 7 basically locks to make the team.

They may all bust, but that’s great on paper.

I wonder if Deion Jones has too much damage to his shoulder. He was a really good LB but suffered a significant injury to his shoulder in pre-season last year. But if he is healthy now and cleared medically, I'd go this route. You don't have to give up anything. But he will need to take a major pay cut and accept a 1 year prove it deal. But it would be a great move because if he returns to his older self, he will also get a nice contract most likely netting us yet another quality comp pick. If he's not healthy or just wants too much money, yeah you need to bring in someone. Devon White is just too expensive in terms of contract and compensation. Zach Cunningham or Kwon Alexander could also be free agent 1 year options.

Anyone upset about Carter doesn’t know Ish about F!

What’s goofy is you posting Hargrave’s scouting report from 7 years ago. Should I post Tom Brady’s scouting report?
