So 3 years from now, Ruggs can be signed as a FA?  Or Raiders have his rights?  Are the controlled years of his rookie contract deferred to then?

Not saying anyone should sign him.  Just curious how it works.

Cut so a FA.

No, it really wouldn’t change my outlook.  I would be forgiving in that instance.  If you knew my daughter, she would be too.  Tax evasion is not a victimless crime, it’s a crime against all of The People.  I don’t favor jail time at all for "victimless” crime. Legislating one’s own morality (calling them religious beliefs is hiding behind religion in my view) is wrong from my libertarian viewpoint.  But that’s not the point here.  The point is that we have a young man that made a grievous error (while impaired), but what value is it to further ruin his life too.  If you think three years in prison is a joke, really think about how that would impact you.  My guess is that three years rehabilitates him whereas more probably has a better chance of corrupting him than rehabilitating him.

What a load of BS. Yeah, your innocent daughter gets plowed into by an entitled idiot doing 156 MPH drunk and you’d turn the other cheek immediately and hope for his rehab after she dies a horrible fiery death. I have zero sympathy for the perpetrator in this case, only for the innocent victim. Stop calling it an error or mistake, it was a choice. This is a guy with every resource in the world available to him and he made a choice not to engage any of them. I don’t care how he’s impacted. He could die in prison of hepatitis and I’d shed no tears.

On another note, I didn’t say tax evasion was victimless, that’s why I separated the two. Very telling that you felt the need to quantify that almost as if you think tax evasion is more egregious.

Feel like the Vikings get their uniforms altered every other year.

I also think the NFL is treading on thin ice with discipline that isn't related to gambling or PEDs.  They are just trying to save face themselves...they do not want to get crap for looking the other way, nor do they want crap and legal ramifications for being either overbearing or inconsistent with suspensions and penalties.  I doubt they enjoy doing their own investigations and tossing out suspensions.

If a player is arrested/convicted, then they square themselves with the law.  An individual team can release them for that.  But why a league suspension?  Once time is served, community service, jail, fines, whatever...let the legal system sort it out.  They expose themselves to some liability being judge, jury, and executioner in suspensions for offenses that are already being handled externally.

Ruggs did something egregious and deserves to do time.  How much time is simply a negotiation.  1 year isn't enough.  Life is too much.  Don't get hung up on the details.

Make no mistake about it, his life is ruined too.

Pardon my ignorance on this but how does Ruggs situation compare to Donte' Stallworth?  Didn't he kill someone while DUI?  Didn't get only get like a month?

I know it's all we got but I think some are reading too much into a media interview.  Nolan Smith will spend all year with Reddick. They'll talk. And the media is playing up the Georgia thing and it's a fun story but I'm sure they'll interact with other teammates.  They happen to be a cluster of young guys on the D

Let's hope that's how they look at it.  Let the best two win.  What's nice about this group is I think it FINALLY gets Wallace off the roster.

I just don't think spending the resources to get a guy like Baker is going to be worth it.  Keep the cap space and draft picks and let these players develop.

If it gets Wallace off the roster, one of the Ss needs to play a lot of STs snaps because Wallace did.  If Evans doesn’t start, do we trust him to plays STs?   If Edmunds doesn’t start, can he accept being a backup and a ST player.  More nuances to who they keep than just the S battle.  Way I look at it, Wallace, Evans and Edmunds (and technically Chachere) are all one year rentals at this point, so may the best win at all aspects of the job.  Long term they have Brown, maybe Garner or Ringo and McCollum signed. That favors those three if it’s even close to equal. But back up and especially fourth S has to play a lot of STs.   Add into that one year rental group, Josiah Scott.  He’s interesting because he plays nickel too.  (Kind of a two birds with one stone kind of player).  He also did well on STs.  Players that can play some nickel, S and STs include Chachere, Garner, McCollum, probably Brown and Wallace (albeit all based on college play).  Versatility at the bottom of the DB group tends to matter.  I do think STs ability will factor heavily into the back roles at DB and LB.  Frankly, Kyron’s not being the monster on STs that was expected kept him inactive and may impact his ability to make the team this year, for example.  Patrick Johnson played a lot of STs.  I expect Nolan Smith will play a lot of STs this year.  Hopefully better than Kyron did last year.  BTW, the active OL back ups play on FGs, extra points and even some punts.

Great.

All I know is Ruggs was driving much faster with a much higher bac.  Per wiki, Stallworth was mostly driving reasonably.

Let's not equate his life being ruined to the victim's life being over.

I agree. Special teams have been overlooked here for too long outside of Lovato and Jake. Let the 4 best safeties win. The only two I would consider locks are Brown and Blankenship. And we do have quite a few listed CBs who could be considered for the S transition...Scott, McCollum, Gardner, etc. Should be Edmunds, Evans, Wallace, Chachere and the S converts battling for 2 spots. This position is the most intriguing camp battle. I'm rooting hard for Brown to start as a R, which is a tall task.

And I believe in Stallworth's case IIRC, he hit someone that randomly was crossing a semi-major highway in the dead of night. Still tragic of course, but less egregious in the eyes of the law.

Awful statement to get out there. Puts Desai behind the 8 ball a bit in terms of fan outlook. If we start off rough, it'll be "coulda had Fangio." Fing Gannon is such a tool. I hope the Cardinals go 9-8, miss the playoffs, have no shot at Williams or Maye, and Gannon gets fired.

Are you using (while impaired) as a mitigating factor?  Because it's actually an aggravating factor.

Impaired driving is a societal problem that is not going away, despite efforts to make it so.  His sentence should be doubled based solely on the fact he chose to operate a motor vehicle while impaired.  A light sentence will not teach Ruggs anything and it will further endanger the public, because these drunks don't learn -- they keep doing it.

Two things, you're all Eagles now. Yea, it's fun to all be teammates and Howie is picking the entire UGA defense but the last thing you want is some UGA "click" on the team. It's great they are all here but their teammates are also Slay, BG, Cox and the rest...I hope these new guys understand the values of veteran leadership, not just school alliance.

Second, and this is probably Nolan Smith being modest and maybe even a bit shy, but I hope he does call Reddick and asks him questions.  I understand the point he's trying to make by sitting in the shadows and learning by watching, but if Reddick is a good teammate and a leader, he would have no issue if Smith calls him and picks his brain as much as he can to be the best he can be. As a matter of fact, I'd love for Reddick to reach out and say Nolan, this is what you need to do.

Jalen Carter is growing on me.  I didn't want him but like I said after the draft, I'm going to be open minded and hope he can prove me wrong.  Excited to see what all of these young defenders can do together.

I suspect Nolan would be receptive to Reddick reaching out to him.  Hopefully the vet leaders will reach out during offseason program.  Hoping Howie gets them signed soon so they can participate fully.

The more I watch Carter, the more reserved he seems to be.

Smith said he wanted to do everything 'the right way', that means that he's very open to learning from the veterans, but feels it would be an impropriety for him to call Reddick unsolicited.  I hear him on that.  Let the vet put the offer out there, let the coaches connect them, or whatever.  I have no doubt that Smith wants to learn from Reddick.  The only thing that his answer showed me he's extremely respectful and doesn't want to cross any lines (real or imagined) about rookie's access to vets.   I loved his answer, frankly.  He is offering deference to the vet.  Good stuff.  I have no doubt that he's going to be happy to learn from Reddick, but wants to do it (in his words) "the right way".   Good on him.

Current list of players on the last year of their contract.

Starters are Kelce, Cox(?), Penny/Swift, Morrow, and Edmonds(?).  Driscoll, Stoll, Graham, Bradley, and Watkins are key backups.  Lovato is important too.

We seem to have a succession plan in place for Kelce and Cox.  Howie seems to have a working approach to the RB room.

It's early, but in addition to the OL, I'd expect to see some investment next season at WR and TE

Call it BS if you want, but it is the way I feel.  I would grieve the loss of a loved one or friend but that wouldn’t change my view.  If impairment affects his driving, it probably also impacted his judgment.  Look, I handled and oversaw a lot serious accidents in my professional career, many involving deaths and serious injury. (Thousands over a close to four decade career.)  So my use of the term accident is no accident (term of art in an insurance contract).  We are talking about a fortuitous event.  He didn’t get into the car, aim it at her with the intent to kill her.  (That’s how courts interpret the use of the word accident). Of course, his lawyers were going to try to argue intervening cause if they thought it had a reasonable chance of mitigating the impact on their client. That’s their job.  I am not saying Ruggs is innocent, he will get time in prison.  I do think deterrence (societal, not just individual) and rehabilitation and reintegration into society have important roles in determining sentence.

No you didn’t call tax evasion victimless. Nor did I.  I was just opining on it as a crime.  Not worse than what Ruggs did, different.  Again, deterrence should factor into the sentence as does rehabilitation. It should with all crimes.  But that’s why I am against mandatory sentencing laws.

We can civilly disagree on this matter but probably need to go no further.  The judge will impose the sentence, not you nor I.

BTW... bad job by James Palmer framing Nolan Smith's reaction to his question about calling Haasan Reddick.  Smith didn't say he wouldn't "talk" to him, he said it would be "disrespectful" for him to call him up, and that he's going to do everything the "right way".  Which means, he'll let Reddick reach out first by phone... or he'll just talk to him when they are together, not that he's going to initiate.

Smith is awesome, great answers, great positive upbeat attitude. Really happy we landed him.
