Should 99 be retired? I know why it is, and it’s a sad and tragic story. I was just a bit too young at the time to understand the level of player he was and why it was immediately retired.

No numbers should be retired. Eventually they'll have to be unretired anyway because they'll run out of numbers unless they allow numbers in the hundreds.

I never understood the gesture. It's just a number it doesn't "represent" the person. If you want to honor their memory, put a plaque of them in your stadium or a banner with their name in the rafters.

Regardless of his number, I'd like to say on behalf of TATE and our members that I hope he passes the audition.

I can't say Ringos name without......

Indirect question, did you think Bryce Young was the best QB prospect in this draft? And if not, why

I don't know.   Either him or Cole is the most pro ready QB.  I'd say that Anthony Richardson has the highest ceiling.   I'd want Anthony Richardson because I wouldn't need a pro ready QB.  I'd have a set of running QBs who have been getting me wins.  Depending on who was on my roster,  Anthony Richardson might be the QB choice if I had the 4,  because 244 and 4.43 are rare QB numbers.  My team would, still, then and now, have Terrelle Pryor.  In a 2023 context he might be too hurt, or practice squad, but he'd be there.   I've watched him close, and he never sucked, never played bad,  was often hurt.  The practice squad rules are different now and old players can be on the practice squad.

I've certainly typed "Running QBs are Best" a lot of times over the years on many football websites.

The majority of teams in the NFL don't want running QBs.  They don't go "oh, Anthony Richardson, 244 and 4.43,  if he can't throw so good, we can have him run 26 times a game,  like Greg Roman did in Lamar's first start, and win.  Run run run like Lamar in his first 2 years, and start his career 19-3."   Some would do that.

Most NFL teams - the one picking first for a QB - are thinking "we suck, we've sucked for a while now, and we want the QB who is the least likely to suck right away, because we think that is the best way to stop sucking.   The normal way to do that is with a QB who can pass well immediately.   The normal team doesn't have their QB run a ton,  but the normal team who isn't drafting a sufficient runner is drafting a QB fairly soon."  If 20-25 teams all want the same kind of parts,  the price of those parts becomes expensive.  If only 7-12 teams want a different kind of part, the price is cheaper.

The Eagles did a great job with this draft, and the closer you look at the roster,  the better it looks.

I can put together a number of cool offenses with what the Eagles have on the roster.   They all have some sort of cool theme that I like.

Starting offense - Hurts, Brown, Smith, Goedert, RBBC, Quez (or?).

Sooners 2019 offense - Hurts, Kennedy Brooks. Trey Sermon, Charleston Rambo,
Jaden Haselwood, Grant Calcaterra.   That's neat,   2 WR, 2 RB, 1 QB, 1 TE = all from the 2019 Sooners.  I'm not all that sure how great all those guys are,  but they all are at least practice squad.  These pieces should all work well with Jalen.   The starting offense has 2 WRs and 1 TE who are all great, you really don't want to take them off the field, unless they need rest or something?   So, Rambo and Haselwood seem like practice squad guys who might be playing a lot if something happened to Brown or Smith.

Bulldogs 2021 defense on offense -  Tons of the versatile freakbeasts on this list.   Big, TE/FB - Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter,  speedy WR - Kelee Ringo.  RB/WR/TE - Nolan Smith, Nakobe Dean.  Add Swift for 6 Bulldogs.

Running QBs -  Tyree Jackson, Britain Covey, Greg Ward, Ben VanS,  Mariota, Hurts.   6 running QBs at the same time.

The Eagles have a lot of different offense packs,   Starting, Oklahoma, Georgia, Running QB.  I'd group the Starting with the Oklahoma,  where basically the Oklahoma are backups who Jalen has familiarity with, likes, etc. Normal offense, starters and backups.

And then the Bulldogs + Running QBs,  that's the versatile freakbeasts.   There are about 10 guys in that group who could be getting some snaps where Quez usually is. some are running QBs, others are high ras defense.    Mariota would be the starting QB of this group if it is to practice as a group,   and teach these players some plays, and they could take what they do in the VF offense to the Quez spot, the versatile back spot.   You could remove what Quez does and replace it with whatever it is someone does in a play.   Could be pass protect.

Or they could throw 6 of them out there at the same time.   The Eagles have a lot of players to do interesting stuff with.

Two questions …

(1) what is the current list of UDFAs for the Eagles?

(2) what is the list of Rookie Camp tryout invitees?

For (1) I have:

LB Ben VanSumeren – Michigan State – 6-2, 231

WR Joseph Ngata – Clemson – 6-3, 217

WR Jadon Haselwood – Arkansas – 6-2, 215

OL Trevor Reid – Louisville – 6-4, 311

P/K Ty Zentner - Kansas State

CB Mekhi Garner - LSU  6-2, 215

CB - Eli Ricks - Alabama  6-2, 188

TE - Brady Russell - Colorado

For (2) I have

Bentlee Sanders, CB, Nevada

Chimemela Okorafor, OT, Benedictine

Dalton Godfrey, LS, South Dakota

DaShaun White, LB, Oklahoma

Garett Maag, WR, North Dakota

Jasir Cox, LB, West Virginia

Jordan Murray, TE, Hawaii

TJ Cole, RB, Ouachita Baptist

Toa Taua, RB, Nevada

Xavier Bell, S, Portland State

The way it ended practically demanded the retirement. But as far as the player performance was concerned? It’s a delicate matter, I suppose, but I would suggest his legacy was greater than his performance. He only played five years and in two of them he was overweight and out of shape and didn’t play to expectations. There were moments of greatness mixed in there so I can understand why he’s revered. But in no way was he ever at the level of Reggie White, who was very likely the greatest defensive lineman in history.

Pretty much where I am with this and I'm a guy with a 99 throw back jersey on my back when we play NFC East games.  Great player, amazing personality, loved by the fans and teammates, etc. but didn't play long enough.

Bring 99 back. Life goes on. People get too caught up in the past and tradition.

Numbers shouldn't be retired, but some should be reserved for special talents. I don't want a UDFA requesting 92/99, but someone of the talent of Carter? I don't think 9 will be worn again for quite some time, but again if there is another top level talent at QB that wants the number I would give it to them. If you respect the player a lot, put them up in the rafters. Like most things, there are some caveats here. If another defensive player wore 20, you know the expectations will be sky high for them and the weight of the number could be too much for the player.

There's only so many numbers you can assign, and with OL/DL being put into specific ranges that makes it even more difficult. Give out the numbers again, but reserve them for special talents, but you have to know some of the pressure from the number alone will be too much for some.

Sure fire hall of famer if he didn’t die. Jerome was an absolute force of nature.

I think if you’re talking about team number retirements, JB should be. He was special both on and off the field.

I agree. Then again I may be biased as he was and is my favorite Eagle of all time.

No number should be retired. It's a concept that doesn't actually scale over the long term.  That should give a 10 or 20 year moratorium on it's use.  I'm relatively old and couldn't care less if a number of a player from the 50s or 60s is re-used.

It really is a silly concept.  You wear a number and you're great while you're a part of that team...but to retire a number so no one else can wear it or say no one else will ever be as good as me is really pretty dumb.

Team HOF, Ring of Honor etc.  These sort of things make sense.

Wilbert Montgomery only trails LeSean McCoy by less than 200 yards.  He has one more rushing TD and played in 10 more games as an Eagle.  He had one of his biggest games against the Cowboys to help the Eagles make it to their first Super Bowl.  Tyrone Jones, Daryon Brutley, Shaun Prater, Brian O'Neal....all have worn 31.

Eric Allen played in 70 less games as an Eagle than Brian Dawkins but is tied as team leader with 34 INT.  What's more impressive, Dawk having 34 or Allen matching that number in what equates to playing nearly 4.5 seasons less?  Dustin Fox, David Sims, Roc Carmichael, William James...just some of the names who have worn 21 since Eric Allen.  The bigger travesty is Allen not being in the Pro Football HOF.

Point I'm trying to make is that there are so many records, important plays, players that played big roles during short Eagles careers who we can all look back and say that number WAS important.  But records are going to be broken, there are going to be even more important plays and guys we never imagined would be Eagles for 1 year might play huge roles for this team.

I don’t even care if 20 gets re-used. He’s been gone about 13-14 years?

You're stuck in the current paradigm; the NFL needs to expand over the long term.  I've already bought an Eagles jersey with the number 3,841.

You know somebody is going to wear it; just have to be patient.

So did we basically trade Trevor Penning and a 2024 fourth round pick for Jalen Carter and a 2024 2?

I've got no problem with it, but for me, it needs to be done exceedingly sparingly.   It is done far too much.

Eagles retired numbers should be:  15, 20, 60 and 92.   That's it.  It has to be a Hall of Fame level player, and have something on the resume of league significance.

Van Buren was the first RB ever to have multiple 1000 yard rushing seasons and retired as the all time leading rusher.  (He also led the team to back to back championships.)

Dawkins revolutionized the safety position.

Bednarik was the last of the 60 minute men.

White was the greatest DL of all-time, and the all-time sack leader.  (Bruce Smith's "record" is a sham.)

Brent Celek’s 87 not being in circulation is objectively hilarious.

Interesting idea.   Can you show your work on how you came to that conclusion?
