I don’t know how you could have watched Jurgens last year.

The tape review of the snaps we saw from him are in the post you quoted.

I watched Justin Fields' top 10 plays from 2022.  Not surprisingly, plays 10-6 are him heaving up long bombs and plays 1-5 are all him just taking off and running.  The Bears OC says in an article "He's light years ahead of where he was last year at this time".  Uh huh.  They basically told him at some point last season 'just go ahead and run with it'.  Now that they've spent money brining in WR talent, we'll see how far ahead he is from last year.

I take this stuff with a grain of salt and remember everyone pumping Matt Ryan's tires when he first got to the Colts.

That's about as sophisticated as Hurts was in his first 2 years.  Normally, I'd say there's no chance he figures it out, but Hurts has convinced me to keep an open mind.

Matt Ryan, on the other hand...when we toasted the Falcons in week 1 2021, it was obvious Ryan could not play anymore.  he was cooked.  The fact that the Colts expected something out of him is really damning to the Colts FO.  They just don't get it.

Not betting on it based on past performance, but Davion Taylor and K'von Wallace will have every opportunity to win roster spots.  Their positions are thin and they are reasonably high draft picks.  If they have big camps, there isn't much in the way to get on the roster.  At Safety, Brown, Edmunds, and Blankenship are locks.  Evans is a pretty safe bet.  Since that group lacks any consolidated starters, they may go with 5, which opens a door for Wallace if he plays well.  LB roster spot would be wide open to anyone who has a big camp.

Any OL who has a great camp probably will make the roster.  So Roderick Johnson with his spot starting experience probably doesn't get cut if he looks like the 3rd best tackle on the team in camp.  Driscoll and Steen are depth locks, but Toth/Opeta feel like they have been around forever without ever really being entrusted situational snaps as depth.  If they get outplayed, I don't see why their spots would be safe.

Re-reading some of the draft commentary from last week.

I love it when she gets on stage and reads the picks. After all the BS we have to endure when fans and former players get up on the stage and start rambling, it’s a breath of fresh air to finally hear someone read the card matter of factly. I love her.

The ying and yang of Fields is everyone pumping Matt Ryan’s tires versus everyone deflating Hurts’ tires at this time last year.  Time will tell whether Fields is more like Ryan or more like Hurts.

I had a wait and see outlook towards Hurts last year; the offense around him was completely built and it was a question of what he could do with it.  Ryan was always going to fail and it was insulting hearing the media present him as a savior for the Colts.

I was never high on Fields coming out of the draft.  He's very slow to process and running is his ceiling, which was already taking a toll on him last season.  I suspect Anthony Richardson this season will look very much like Fields did last season.

I'm interested in seeing the OL that the Eagles had on the PS last year to see if they've developed at all.

Brett Toth, Roderick Johnson, Jarrid Williams,Tyrese Robinson, Julian Good-Jones and Cameron Tom were all here for the entire year on the PS.  Mix of younger guys and 27 year old vets.  Can any of them take a next step to be OL7/8 on gameday?

Mailata, Dickerson, Kelce, Jurgens, Johnson, Steen.  Those are your top 6.  Driscoll is most likely is OL7.  Opeta has experience but I think they'd prefer upgrading from him. Is Brett Toth healthy and ready for an actual contributing role?  Trevor Reid has potential at T3.

On defense, Shaun Bradley is the jaggiest of jags at LB and I'd love for anyone to step up and take his position. I'm willing to take a gamble on more time on Taylor's elite athleticism over Bradley's limitations.  Not hating on Bradley, he just offers little in terms of growth potential.  Taylor just can't stay healthy to even be a ST demon.  Maybe he finally can?

I also have a feeling the Eagles think highly of Kyron Johnson, another elite athlete who can be a core ST contributor on every ST unit.

One last player I'm curious about is Janarius Robinson. 6-5, 260 former Florida State edge rusher.  He's 25, can he steal Barnetts position?

A lot of bottom of the roster battles to watch this summer.

This is actually a really good point.  I rag on here because she really is Debbie Downer up there but you're right, it's nice to have someone walk to the podium, read the pick and then walk off.

I'm more than fine with just announcing picks without rambling or shouting "jokes" at the crowd that get 0 reaction but

I looked at the Eagles roster and pulled out the players 25 and under.  I know that their 'season ages' will be different in September.  I sorted by my impression of their talent level.  I assigned 'Pending' to the rookies and expected contributors who haven't had an opportunity to play much.  There are another 24 players on the roster 25 or under who didn't make this list.

Note the schools these young players come from.

I could be wrong, but I don't see Blankenship starting this season.  I know he was first off the bench when CGJ went out, but I think Edmunds and Brown get most of the safety snaps this year.

If you let a couple of 26-year-old OTs slip into the mix, you could line up this offense.

If Penny goes down we have no bigger back which is why I think we need to keep Sermon over Scott.   I put Swift, Gainwell, and Scott all in the same bucket along with Penny and Sermon

I would just go with probability. There is a plausible scenario where Davis and Jurgens have limited roles again in 2023. I do not think there is a scenario where Dean doesn’t start 17 healthy games this year

The first 7 weeks of 2022 Jordan Davis played 33% of the snaps on the DL; after returning from injury he played only 18.3% of the snaps due to the Eagles signing Suh and Joseph making for a deeper DT rotation.  I would expect Davis' snaps for 2023 to be in the 40-45% range if he stays healthy.  I'm expecting Cox, Carter, Davis, and Williams to have somewhat similar volume of snaps this season.  Cox and Williams probably just over 50%

Dean appears at present to be a starter at LB.  He will likely get 90% or more of defensive snaps.  Jurgens will entirely be based on whether he beats out Steen at RG; he could get 99% of snaps, or less than 5%.  My assumption is Jurgens will start at RG.

It's funny, I asked because even though Davis was the first pick of the Eagles in 2022, I'm least confident in him being a good player of the first 3 picks. I'd order it Jurgens>Dean>Davis,

Jurgens mainly because of Stout, but he also looked really good in limited snaps. Dean, I just think is a baller. Maybe he'll end up being undersized, but it was impossible to watch him in college and not think he's legit. Davis I have serious doubts if he'll ever be more than a run stuffing nose tackle with limited pass rush ability. But he certainly is a physical specimen.

Jurgens-Dean-Davis

I'm not as big on Davis and Dean as most seem to be, especially Davis. I know he was hurt, but I don't know what people saw in Davis last season to be super excited about him. You obviously need to wait and see how he is going into his second year and I'm not quitting on him, but he was losing snaps to two off the street vets in Suh and Joseph. The biggest impact Davis had last year was getting hurt because Howie doesn't sign those other two if he doesn't go down, and they made a big impact on the defense helping them go as far as they did. I'm actually higher on Milton Williams than I am Davis.

Dean's success will be determined on how well the line is in front of him. If he's able to stay clean as far as offensive linemen not getting to him in the second level, I think he'll be fine and make some nice plays. But he's not an independent player who is going to impact games by himself. That will be determined on the guys in front of him.
