Bo and Berman seem to think the Eagles could let CGJ and Hargrave walk. I really don't think there's any chance that happens. The Eagles value DT so highly and there's no obvious replacement for Hargrave. And CGJ is the first quality safety they've had in years and can't see them just letting him walk. Even with the compensatory picks factored in.

Howie values draft picks, he gave up two of them for CJGJ. Howie has always been willing to pay big money for ascending talent in their mid 20's. CJGJ is an ascending talent in his mid 20's. They also have next to nothing in terms of young talent at the S position. I just don't see them letting him go.

Hargrave on the other hand is a 30 year old DT coming off of a career year and they have invested a 1st and 3rd round pick in DT's over the last two drafts. I realize they value the lines highly but all signs point to Hargrave getting huge money elsewhere.

Why do minority coaches have to prove themselves in the XFL and USFL? Where are white coaches proving themselves?

You took that way out of context.  There are only so many coaching positions available in the NFL every year....maybe 4-6.  You know the retreads are always going to get a look and there are then the hot up and coming coaches.

The XFL/USFL would give minority coaches an opportunity to be head coaches, build their own coaching staff...many with other minorities in coordinator and position coaching roles, and build their resumes up.  You also have to keep in mind that the minority coaching pool isn't nearly as deep.  The more and more former players get involved in coaching, the more there will be to choose from down the road.

The diversity of coaching will naturally change as more and more players get in to coaching once they retire.

So with Desai here can we safely assume a 4-3 cover three scheme?

I could see it.  CJGJ with his agent are going to look to be the highest paid safety of all time and Hargrave will look for a massive deal at 30 years old.

I would he surprised that we don't at least tag and trade one of them though.

Letting Hargrave go could also compound further, because they'd be more likely to invest at the position (again) at the 10th pick, which would be a mistake, instead of taking care of CB. I think Jordan Davis' lack of development complicates this. If Cox and Hargrave both walk, Williams and Davis would legitimately be one of the worst DT pairings in the NFL. The Eagles would have gone from one of the 5 best to the 5 worst. That is a significant drop off in a SB or bust year.

I wouldn't be surprised if CJGJ walks. Eagles don't overpay for S. If he's looking to be the highest paid S, Howie isn't the guy to go for that. He even kinda laid it out when he said today "it's hard to make an offer to players when it's not in the range they are going to get" and then when on to explain how they will inform them the range they are looking comfortable with but wouldn't be mad if a player takes the bag somewhere else.

Both Hargrave and CJGJ not coming back would be surprising though.

Franchise tag for Safety is only $14M.  I'd be surprised if we don't CJGJ at that number.

I don't see them using the tag. They would need to clear cap space just to tag them whether the player signs it or not. CJGJ they would need to open up about $4M more than they have currently, Hargrave would be an additional $9 or $10M. They would have to open up more space than for the start of FA.

I think Howie would be ok if that was the APY on a multiyear deal. Not all at one year that he can't manipulate.

Agree, and hope you're right.  There is nothing at safety.  You're either going to pony up and pay for CJG, who deserves to be paid top dollar, or you're going to overpay for Marcus Epps to come back and be an average starting safety.  You can't let both walk and leave the team with Blankenship and Wallace.

TJ Edwards and Marcus Epps served their purpose.  Inexpensive investments that worked out both for the Eagles and the players.  Both are going to get significant raises this year and the Eagles aren't the ones doing it.

But Howie can manipulate elsewhere if he needs extra room this year.  It doesn't make any sense to look at the salary cap for only this year considering how easy it is to manipulate cap hits for anyone into future years.

The question is only is CJGJ worth $14M to us next year when we're trying to win the Super Bowl?  If yes he gets tagged.

Cap hits today versus in future years for any particular player don't matter.

Do they need to clear that cap space at the time of using the tag or do they just need the cap space cleared by the start of the season?

There isn't a lot of other moves they can make though. OTC said they are one of the bottom 5 teams in optionality of opening up cap because of doing it a little too much already.

I'm not saying they are completely screwed with the cap. Howie just never uses the tag for a reason, and it would be a surprise to me if he decided to do it in a year that they have some limitations already along with how many other FA's they have leaving and need to replace.

To put it another way, I'd be more surprised if they tag CJGJ and have him play on it than if they just made him the highest paid S.

Don't forget the Eagles  walked away on the top safety last year in free agency.

Maybe a year later they feel a safety contact fits in to the plan better.

Our maybe they're still not willing to pay top dollar for a safety.

At the start of the new league year which is in 2 weeks. The player needs to be able to sign it at anytime, so the Eagles need to reserve the cap space for them to do so.

The one scenario that would make sense is if they are close to a deal but still working some things out, so Howie tags him at the deadline which is March 7th and then completes the deal before the start of FA which makes the tag number go away and replaces it with however we wants to structure the deal.

There are a lot of fairly young safeties, and with solid production. Last year we watched as all safeties went off the market to other teams. But its another year where there seem to be options if we have to walk away.

I didn't realize Nasir Adderly was a FA.  I'd love to bring him in.

I think Howie will make a fair to good offer for him. But it’s going to take a small concession from CJGJ as well to finish the deal. If his only care is getting the most money possible, he’ll probably find it from a bad team in FA.

I believe I remember Sean Payton being fascinated with Wentz when he was at New Orleans.  Maybe the Broncos pick him up.

Wasnt Payton the one who came out and said his plan was to make Wentz beat them?

1 hour ago, LeanMeanGM said:

Nah. Sean Payton's whole stance with Wentz was once he hits a certain number of passes he's going to lose the game.

Basically the key to beating him is putting the game in his hands. Doesn't sound like he would want him.

Beat me to it

Would be extremely bummed if CJGJ isn’t brought back. I hate that idea. Hopefully they can agree on a long term deal. It’s nice having stability there ala Dawkins & Jenkins.

He was my #1 priority but the writing is on the wall he and his agent are aiming at landing the largest contract ever for a safety.

Combine week. Here’s the franchise’s only SB MVP at the combine

The difference he made on defense was 2nd to only Reddick. That type of production can’t just be replaced every day. Also his energy lost would leave a void. He’s a special player and we may have to pay up.
