Imo the mark of a really good defensive coordinator is if you can maximize the talent that you have but also when you are given less than ideal talent and injuries that you can build them up and still be good/competent. I think next year that was going to be the case. Losing a bunch of talent and unlikely 11 out of 11 starters are healthy by the time the playoffs rolled around. So you better have been able to build up some of the lesser talent and some of the younger talent because otherwise you were going to be in a world of trouble.

We can say whatever we want but I give jim Schwartz a lot of credit for 2018. that defense had a crap load of injuries. But by the time they got to that divisional round playoff game, they might not have been great or even top-five, but they were competent enough to keep you in the game. he adjusted to the talent and injuries he had to deal with and put them in a position to be successful.

no offense to Gannon, i think the only way his system and his style would have a chance to work against better offenses and QBs in the league is if he has a stacked roster. What’s more mind blowing in all this are the stats that kapadia dropped in the Philly special podcast. this wasn’t just mahomes is gonna mahomes. He put up some of the best analytical numbers of his entire career against Gannon. I could understand 2021 with the talent but SB you had arguably one of the most talented defenses in the league. Sheil said it best in that podcast about how poorly he thought the game plan was

Yup Gannon had two weeks to come up with a game plan and over those two weeks he decided his best plan against mahommes and Reid was to play a pre season Defense...🤔

Who cares? Gannon is gone, hopefully CGJGGJGJG is back. This is a big nothing burger

It’s essentially nothing, yeah. Just a dumb thing to do and a bad look.

I wish for next year The Ringers Philly Special podcast would be rebuilt either new people around Shiel.  Solar and their producer Cliff arr both awful.

Agreed. With the 2017 SB run, we had the "next man up" mentality and made it work. With Gannon it was more like praying that we had no injuries because the defensive performance would drop considerably. If you need Pro Bowl/All Pro talent throughout your front 4 and secondary to make your defensive scheme work then it's not much of a scheme.

I'm still not over it. Still get pissed thinking about it. We all know how hard it's to get to the SB. When we lost in 2004 it took us till 2017 to get to another one. So many things have to fall in place. And to not win it after being up by 10 at a half is a colossal failure.

Yup me neither.

I've found that I've been avoiding coming on here because everytime I feel like I might be getting over the loss I come on here and read stuff and it hurts all over again.

I've been upset after games before but for whatever reason this one just really hurt.

the Houston Texans with severely less talent did as well as the eagles. Like every time sheil brings up analytics of how bad historically the eagles defense was it makes me irked. Like the eagles defense didn’t even have to be good. They just had to be average or even slightly below average. Yet they couldn’t even do that.

The fact maddox and CJGJ got hurt were used  as excuses for why Dallas put up 40 was irritating. You aren’t always going to have every guy healthy. That’s football. You adjust to the personnel you have and make due. The eagles in 2018 lost mcleod, maddox, mills and Darby for long periods of time. Yet by playoffs they were still competent and not giving up 30 and 40 points. Gannon is a good regular season DC cause there’s a lot of mediocre and bad OLs and QBs. So can have a lot of success. Outside of kirk cousins in week 2 (Lawrence in the rain and when he was awful early in the season) the eagles D gave up 30+ to the lions, packers, Dallas and chiefs.

Trey Palmer and Tyler Scott , 2 wideouts who will definitely improve their draft stock at the combine .

I'd be interested in some of those stats from Sheil.

I'm not sure I'll feel any better but maybe directing all my disappointment at Gannon will help me feel a bit better about the loss

The D game plan from the get go was so soft, KCs first drive of the game they just marched straight down the field with wide open guys.

I think I was maybe more disappointed In the eagles inability to stop the Run, that interior OL of the chiefs had their way with the eagles front and Gannon just kept rushing 4 and dropping 7 and I thought if one is dropping 7 all game how are so many dudes wide open???

I expected maybe Gannon would watch how the Bengals slowed mahommes by dropping 8 and only rushing 3 but Gannon never even tried that once.🤷‍♂️

It was just an epic failure by Gannon and that a team after that miserable performance would then turn around and hire him to be a HC is beyond me, or that Howie offered him more to stay is puzzling, I would have handed him walking papers the minute the clock hit zero, was just a miserable game plan and atrocious coaching by Gannon.

Listen to the Philly special podcast. I want to say it’s around 39th min in. He goes into a laundry list of stats and analytics about how bad it was, how Gannon did an horrible job with two weeks to prepare and how it wasn’t just mahomes being mahomes. It’s a good listen cause he really doesn’t sugar coat it like some of the other reporters like McMullen has

Yeah. I think I would have preferred a blowout. Atleast then it would have given me the semblance that they were just better than us on the day. To quote the late Dennis Green "  They are who we thought they were and we let them off the hook" 😞

That would have been a wild interview.

Dang would’ve been quite the scene. As soon as they story broke you knew he wouldn’t. So I’m not shocked. I actually wouldnt shocked after medical testing if he doesn’t just leave and do his other testing at his pro day.

Agree with most of your depth moving up suggestions but I think Seumalo is as good as gone.  He's one of, if not the top G in FA.  He's going to get PAID.

Seumalo benefits from the scheme and how Stout adjusts for his stance.  Playing next to Johnson and Kelce is a factor.  That type of blocking scheme is almost necessary for Seumalo. May be that he is gone but depends on Howie views him.  Viewed by many as the weakest link on the Eagles OL.  But Howie understands the market and value.  Looking at the rankings for FAs, Seumalo isn’t in the top 50.  May also be some Big V (or Herbig) caution in the market and Seumalo’s injury history over the last few years may also impact his price.

I’d love to keep seumalo. I think he’s a good RG. He’s not Brandon brooks or even what Dickerson has a chance to ultimately be. That said i just think someone in free agency is going to overpay him cause there’s a shortage of even just above average offensive lineman. One of these teams like houston or even cincy who’s got cap space i think goes after him  and willing to slightly overpay to improve an area of big weakness

When the eagles trade for him, people knew he ran his mouth and said a lot things. Heck it was discussed on the blog about why some were worried about his acquisition. i  think around the league people already knew that’s the type of personality he has. I’m guaranteeing some team is still gonna pay him top of the market money even with throwing Gannon under the bus. If he wasn’t going to be here I don’t think the Jonathan Gannon comment has anything to do with it. It has to do with the fact the Eagles don’t feel like paying a safety that type of money and they don’t think with the cap ramifications going forward that they want to do that deal.

Could be.  I guess we’ll see how it plays out.

The fact he drove off after he saw the accident is such a POS move. Idk how you see something like that especially with teammates and people you are close with and can just drive away

He was hammered and scared

We have no idea if Davis and Williams would be one of the worst DT pairings in the league. The fact of the matter is they invested high picks in both and with so many free agents they need to replace some of them with cheaper young talent that they have invested in. Also, I think Davis's "lack of development'' is a myth. He was playing well and had a role before he got hurt and they loaded up for a championship run with the signings of Suh and Joseph. Does he need to step it up next year, sure but investing huge dollars in a 30 year old DT coming off of a career year when you just drafted a guy in the first round the year prior would be dumb.

I disagree with a lot of this, I don’t think at any point this season was Davis playing well. I think he was playing pretty poorly actually. That doesn’t mean he can’t develop, but I’ve seen absolutely nothing from him to justify that pick as of yet.

The Eagles have gotten into trouble in the past relying on young guys to develop who had shown no signs of anything when they had holes at positions and it had backfired on them. If this was a rebuild season, I’d agree, but in SB or bust season you can’t just go into it hoping that Davis takes his game several levels higher and go "oops” if he doesn’t. And then everyone would look back and say you just let a top level DT walk out the door.

Idgaf. I don’t care how scared you were. That’s your teammate who’s like a brother and people like your family that you see every day. Even if were drunk (shouldn’t have been driving a thing called a Fing Uber or Lyft or a college staffer they specifically have to come pick you up… ya even Arizona has those so I’m guessing Georgia does as well) I’m going to go try to help and make sure everything is ok. Called consequences of your actions. If you want to make a dumb ass decision then deal with the Fing consequences of your dumb ass decision. Don’t run away cause you are drunk and scared of the repercussions that will happen cause you are on the scene drunk and racing

no offense, he should’ve been scared to get in a car while drunk, driving and go 90 mph (or higher) which could potentially kill himself and others.
