I like the tea leaves so far this offseason.

What are the worst things that have happened to the Eagles under Howie Roseman?  Turning himself into a pretzel signing and acquiring older players.

I was worried we'd ruin the next 5 years trying to bring back the same awesome but still not SB worthy roster from last year.

Slay falls off in the back half of every season.  Bradberry, Sanders, and Hargrave will be low-impact, high cap hit players by the MID point of their new deals.  Even CJGJ...yea, he's fiery.  He makes splash plays.  But play in, play out...how good is he, really, in coverage?  What did he do to sure up the middle of the field in the SB?  Can he cover an elite TE?  Can he cover a WR particularly well?

I'm OK with not spreading ourselves too thin here.

We took out more trash this weekend. Publicly harassing VA (who saved the EMB and is trying to focus on the technology, marketing & ad revenue) will not be tolerated. Taking a fun football me

Restructure means we take the 17m$ salary and convert it into a bonus, which then all hits at once when we trade him, where we could have gotten out of that salary. All you’re doing is creating more unnecessary cap charges

Any team that trades for him would negotiate an extension, ripping up any salary he has left, so it’s irrelevant to them if we restructure before the trade or not

Its a terrible idea any way you look at it

Slay would never agree to lowering his salary for no real reason either.

To further the point, why break the bank on D in general?  You can't stop top QBs when it counts anyway.  Just go young and cheap on D while maintaining an unstoppable O.  The KC model.

Frankly i tend to think slay doesn’t find a trade partner that’s willing to give the eagles anything of value and give him an extension he wants. He ultimately restructures and plays here in 2023 and then walks after the season.

Howie saw his defense get shredded in the SB. Why pay for all these defensive guys when you can load up on offense and just out-score the opposition?

I'd take anything for him.  Even a conditional 7th is fine just to clear the books of his deal.

Exactly.  Why break the bank on D when you'll get torched by top QB's anyway?

That’s basically what Berman and Bo wulf discussed on their podcast right before/during the combine about some things they were hearing. I wouldn’t be shocked if they view it as just make an offense imthat goes to even a higher level and hope your defense week to week is good enough.

you could probably find somebody willing to give you something for him if he’s willing to play on that last year of his contract. The issue is he wants an extension. So I’m not sure any team is willing with him being 32 and when the extension kicks in going to be 33 paying him more and giving up compensation.

What are the odds Slay can keep his mouth shut and not exacerbate the situation?

Better than CJGJ but not very good

What a roller coaster of emotions this morning. Chuck fletcher gets canned. Then the slay news where he can seek a trade and now Andrew Painter has a tear of his ucl.

Painter has a UCL sprain, 4 weeks rest. Not a full tear.

So IF Slay is traded, do they look to bring Bradberry back or are they going the young, inexpensive direction?

I'd go hard after Jamel Dean and then take Witherspoon/Gonzalez at 10.

My bet is that they will turn the page and go young.

Just to point out harper also didn’t have a full tear of his ucl. And yet needed TJ. Also siranthony dominguez had the same and they waited for more time approach and needed it. Pretty good chance he is gonna need it.

So mcphearson and jobe starting corners at the moment if slay and bradberry are gone. Along side Blankenship and Wallace at safety lol.

They will get a younger cheaper option at CB in free agency or maybe a trade.  Then I'm sure CB will be taken in the first 2 rounds.

Also I'm kinda losing hope for McPhearson at this point.  I'd figure if he could play he would have been on the field at least somewhat by now.  Jobe is someone I think could be a sleeper and get lots more playing time this year

Mostly agree here yes. I also want a RB that can close a game out. That keeps Mahomes or the opponents good QB off the field. Eagles need to get the lead then use their run game to kill the clock and the opponent. Because if the other teams QB is good and has the ball last, they most likely score.

The Eagles asked him to hold off until they figure out what to do with Slay. Smart.

I'd be OK with a 4th in return.

I think a lot of what we’re seeing now is an over-correction by Howie based on how he handled the post 2018 Super Bowl team, and I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. He wants to be reliant on the draft and some mid-level FA signings to fill the gaps. The importance on offensive/defensive line will always be there, but outside of the deal they’re going to give Hurts they’re not going to splurge elsewhere.

I am not sure you even get that. Whoever trades for him knows they are going to have to give him an extension. Which means not only are you giving up draft capital but you’re also putting more money into a new contract. If slay was younger I’d see it. However if he were younger i think the eagles extend him. At 32 going on 33 when an extension would kick in not many teams making that type of move.

Using the SB for the status quo of saying defense doesn't matter isn't the best take. Gannon takes the biggest L for not being able to adjust and he's gone already. We already knew his defenses were garbage against top QBs with or without talent.

I'm not against trading away Slay but saying we just need to gut the defense and spend no money there isn't a good alternative. The only big question mark on offense is RB and that's a bad position to spend big money on.

Agree.  I think a 4th in return would probably be the absolute best you could get for him.

Maybe Gannon will take him in Arizona 😄😄

Teams that may sense to trade for Slay - Wants to win now, has cap space, has picks to trade, has CB needs

  • Raiders
  • Patriots
  • Lions
  • Falcons

There are some wildcards like Washington, KC, Jacksonville. Doug coached Slay in 2020, and Baalke likes trading picks, so that would work.
