Why not make him play it out? eagles seemed to have moved away from that strategy

His cap number as is was too big to just play it out. The only way he could have played it out is if he agreed to a restructure/possible pay cut, which he would not without an extension.

Rosenhaus may have been threatening a holdout.

Either way, I'll take the younger, better player at a reasonable contract.

$16 million base salary was too much money to risk it.

Agreed

@LeanMeanGM With Slay designated as post June 1st cut, are they still able to trade him before or a post June 1st trade?

I don't really understand why the Eagles would make this designation now as it shows they have a need at CB in the draft and lose any leverage to trade him after June 1st. I understand it gives the player the opportunity to work out a deal with another team and sign, but not sure why the Birds need to announce this now. Cut players don't count towards a future comp pick, so I'm not really seeing the strategy here.

Maybe. But there’s a chance eventually someone like the bears or Texans just says F it and does it anyway. Nor can you just hold up doing what you have to do for him to eventually cave. I think he may have overplayed his value. I think bradberry saw the market wasn’t materializing the way he thought it was going too where he got significantly overpaid by other teams. Even though Bradberry might have gotten a little more from other teams but i don’t think it was significantly more. Hence why he was willing to return here instead of going elsewhere.

Maybe pivot to Griffin? He's a very good locker room guy and took the young corners under his wing last year. Not exciting but solid in all aspects and will help out whatever young corners we draft.

I wonder if someone like Marcus Peters is this year's Bradberry -- 1 year prove it deal.

Wouldn't he end up losing money the longer he holds out? What teams still needs a safety and are willing to give him a big contract still?

Lanes dead money is going to historic when he eventual hangs it up

How many void years does he have?

CB is back on the menu at 10.

Not sure I exactly understand your question. Slay will be able to sign with anyone today at 4PM when it becomes official. And you can't designate a trade Post June 1st.

The Eagles could hold onto him just to trade or release him after June 1st, but that's doing the player pretty dirty, and is not good optics for future free agents or current players.

I think there’s some confusion with the Slay situation. I don’t think Slay wanted a new deal. I think the Eagles wanted to do a new deal to free up cap space and Slay’s side said we will only accept a restructure if you guarantee us 3 more years.

I don’t think Slay”s side just came out and said "we want a new contract”

This would make the most sense, imo.   At the end of the day, it’s a business during the off-season - and it looks like both sides’ "hands were tied” - to an extent.

Curious if he said he wouldn't play under his current contract

This wasn’t a holdout if that’s the question.  Eagles got themselves to a point with his contract that it either had to be restructured or he’d be gone.  He has the right to want more than what they were willing to pay.  Sounds like it was a respectful disagreement on his current value.

I’m doubting Eagles are going to F with a players ability to go out in the free agency and make money that they don’t intend to keep. also chance other players see them do that which hinders his ability to make money as most teams won’t have significant money june 1st it’s a bad look.

Are we getting Carsuck back? Great lockeroom guy 🙄

Wild guess but I don’t think the tweet is serious.

I tend to agree with the Eagles that I think he’s going to find the value in free agency for a 32 year old corner is not going to be a three-year guaranteed contract. If he gets a three-year guaranteed contract hats off to him and the team that gives it to him is stupid. I think he’s gonna wind up finding out the same thing that Bradberry did.  he’s going to essentially get a two-year contract with More guaranteed money then he had now, but not to what he and rosenhaus thinks he’ll get.

Also, keep in mind Eagles didn't announce anything. This was all Darius Slay and his wife running to twitter and leaking it out there. I'd bet the Eagles/Howie informed him and his agent this morning so they could be prepared for this afternoon, and if it was up to them, nothing would be made public until 4PM today.
