Not sure I exactly understand your question. Slay will be able to sign with anyone today at 4PM when it becomes official. And you can't designate a trade Post June 1st.

The Eagles could hold onto him just to trade or release him after June 1st, but that's doing the player pretty dirty, and is not good optics for future free agents or current players.

Thanks, the 2nd part answers my question. I know it helps the player out, but it also kind of shows the Eagles hand into what they would do in the draft. If Bradberry and Slay were both on the roster for the draft, I guess CB wouldn't look to be like a major need. Where now with Slay being post June 1st, its more obvious the Eagles have a greater need at CB.

I feel Lurie and the FO have made much better efforts to try to make situations better for players. This is one of those situations, and we constantly see how players love playing for the city. It is definitely a good culture to uphold, even if it shows their hand a little.

Nice try but April Fool's Day isn't for another 17 days.

Bucs were in on Brissett. One less suitor for him if Eagles want him as backup.

@LeanMeanGM With Slay designated as post June 1st cut, are they still able to trade him before or a post June 1st trade?

I don't really understand why the Eagles would make this designation now as it shows they have a need at CB in the draft and lose any leverage to trade him after June 1st. I understand it gives the player the opportunity to work out a deal with another team and sign, but not sure why the Birds need to announce this now. Cut players don't count towards a future comp pick, so I'm not really seeing the strategy here.

Have to be under the cap today iirc

The Bucs were planning to release Mason, until they traded him.
Teams can still try to trade for Slay. I'm not saying it will happen, but that's one reason why it gets announced before the team officially does it.

Any teams signing him right now doesn’t have to give up draft picks along with a new contract. That’s the difference. You don’t have to give up draft picks for an 32 year old corner possibly on the decline and give him an extension whetr the guaranteed money goes into his mid-30s.  no team was gonna give you anything of any value draft capital wise and then also have to sign into an extension. signing him as a free agent and trading a pick(s) for him and giving him an extension are two completely different things.

Hence why he’s being released. They tried to trade him. Nobody was willing to give them anything for him because he wanted an extension along with them giving up draft picks.

iPad for the Eagles to be able to trade him they really need it to be a post June 1 trade to get the full cap space they wanted. I’m guessing nobody in the league was going to wait until June 1.

It doesn't seem like they did their due diligence to trade him though.  Find it really hard to believe they couldn't find someone to trade a 6th or 7th for him.  This feels more like the organization just releasing him out of respect instead of trading him to whichever team would give up a 6th or 7th and I don’t think that's the best approach.

Gannon plucks his first player from our squad ... Cards sign Kyzir White.

I missed this signing.  Glad both Edwards and White are gone.  Jack Campbell from Iowa in the Draft would be a good addition or Ivan Pace from Cincinnati.  Some folks have mentioned Bobby Wagner on a one year FA deal.

that’s true. It’s super unlikely as i think teams rather take their chances at signing him in FA without giving up any potential draft picks. I also think rosenhaus likely knows what teams are interested and where he wants to go.

I like it.  Said it when he was released the Eagles should try to being him back as a backup.  Jalen won't be looking over his back over the presence of Wentz and at this stage of his career I think Wentz realizes what his role would be.

I think it got past the point that it would be a viable solution to hold onto him until after the draft. Once the "seek a trade" report came out, Slay and Drew Rosenhaus know what's coming, and if the Eagles just did nothing, you know Slay would be throwing a fit about it. Giants did the same thing with Bradberry last year, and he is the quietest guy in the world. But he was making it clear he was not happy with what the Giants were doing. I can't imagine how loud Slay would get about it.

It's just one of those situations where it's going to be a giant elephant in the room that isn't going to fool anyone, so might as well come out of it looking as pristine as you can.

Well then it’s obviously a terrible idea

Eagles have a better chance of signing McNabb as backup than Wentz. He'll never step foot back in the Novacare again.

RTK see above regarding due diligence.

The only way a trade significantly helps the Eagles is if it’s a post June 1 trade. Save only 3.7 mil pre-June 1st. How many teams do you think are willing to trade for Darius slay and wait until it is completely done on June 1? I’m guessing those teams that talk to Drew Rosenhaus knew that this situation was likely coming to a head where if he didn’t restructure then the Eagles weren’t gonna give him that extension and he was going to be released. So now you have to give up draft capital, give him an extension and wait til June 1st do be done with the transaction. basically bending over backwards to help the eagles in this situation.

I will add you couldn’t trade a 2023 pick for slay because you were drafting a player essentially for the Eagles and then have to trade him June 1 which the eagles wanted to get the 17.5 mil cap savings. So would’ve had to be a 2024 pick the eagles got for him

the eagles allowed slay to find some trade partner where if a team was willing to be ok with all that they’d have taken the draft pick and done it. I’m guessing all those factors made it really unlikely they found someone to do it.

maybe they get a deal done before the 4 PM eastern time when the new league year starts. However i doubt it highly

It’s not just that Howie can’t possibly have a favorable opinion of him, but he was clearly the third best QB on the Commanders last year. Get someone we’d be comfortable with actually playing QB

Wentz a story to try and lower cost for Brisett ?

I don't think "Brian Steinmetz" is driving any smokescreens. Who knows if that's even a real person.

I like the theory of going forward with the "younger" Bradberry vs Slay, but not sure if Bradberry can be the #1CB Slay was here the last 3 years.

He won't have to be once Devon Witherspoon hits the field. :flex:
