Keep in mind we still managed to go 14-3 in the regular season, made it to the SB with their offense, so lets not pretend the offense wasn't good enough to win the SB.

The issue was the Defense giving up 38....

Offense and special teams gave up 14 of it

I know sheil and solak touched on it a lot. They continuously kept saying he was 19th vs. the blitz. It’s definitely an area that needs improving.

I just did a quick google search and saw 23rd vs the blitz overall, 2nd vs the blitz with man coverage (Detroit game basically) and 31st vs the blitz with zone coverage.

That apparently was from The Athletic football podcast heading into our playoff game against the Giants.

Yikes 31st vs. blitz with zone is really bad. I’m guessing teams around the league will take notice if it so hurts and the offense next year will have to be much better against it.

And the schedule for next year is not doing the Eagles any favors...it looks rough on paper...

Thats the best thing for this team coming off a SB loss.  Lets go through the gauntlet.  If they make it through, we'll have a helluva team on the other side.

A lot of these guys are going to be looking at the regular season like NBA players, just a waste of time until the postseason.  Its just human nature.  Seeing the Niners and Chiefs on the schedule will ensure that doesnt happen.

The contrary point on high draft pick usage on O, is the D is has become a mish mash of older players, FAs, UDFAs and 1 year deals with a chronic lack of investment in Safety and Linebacker.  The GM loving a trade means the middle round picks are once again non-existent, and this means the Eagles struggle to draft for depth.  They should do their best to convert one of the 1st rounders to multiple picks to stop the cycle they got into over the past 10 years.

Also, if Lane is going to retire next season, his contract will be a tougher can kick for Howie without the costs hitting at once.  The reality of void years and silly contracts on declining players like Cox will hit at some point.  The FO have done a nice job opening a window up, but if they want to pay Hurts, void years now won't provide the cap space without needing to keep perpetuating the cycle.

Not sure what my point it, but so be it.

Kind of felt for a while if one of those pass rushers isn’t there at 10 then i think the eagles will move back like 5-7 spots to get more picks. i have a feeling if the pass rushers are off the board then the eagles board likely has prospects graded similarly from 10-17 range.

This sucks bad. Listening to all y’all talk makes me want to jump off a bridge. Yeah. We won’t be as good. No ish. But damn.

I think we will be fine. There is nothing wrong with optimism, no matter what the rest of the board thinks.

We had 5 games without Goedert which meant the main quick out safety valve was out and the TE that was in was inevitably a worse blocker if they were picking up the blitz, plus 2 games with Minshew playing like he'd never started a game before. Clearly it's an area for improvement but sometimes bare statistical analysis only tells a partial tale.

I’m talking about Hurts’ EPA vs blitz. Minshew’s games are excluded. Sure missing Goedert hurt, but that seems like a big stretch to use his absence as a reason to be 31st vs the blitz with zone coverage behind it.

It tells me that Hurts couldn’t take off running because the second level kept eyes on him and we didn’t seem to have much in terms of hot reads. It was a discussion point all year.

As someone pointed out though they really gave up 31.  Another 7 was a 5 yard drive after Toney's punt return.

It's very possible even if the punt return didn't happen that KC marched down anyway and scored a TD.

Really hard to beat the blitz consistently when you have no hot reads. A slot WR that can read zone coverage would help. Also, better coaching.

Didn't know XFL starts Saturday.

Something to keep in mind for all you that enjoy terrible football.

The elephant in the room is whether Hurts has something to do with a lack of hot reads…

If a defense shifts into a blitz look with less than 15 seconds on the play clock, the coaches can’t do anything. It’s up to the guy who’s about to get paid to recognize it and change routes. Any NFL WR and QB has seen enough blitzes to know how to counter them.

Surprised there has been no talk of Derek Carr to the 49ers.

If he's smart he will go to the NFC.  49ers are built to win right now.  This is something that if it happens would make me very nervous about our chances of coming out of the NFC next year.

"Corndog” was the name the Chiefs gave to the motion double move they used to get two wide open TDs. It was cooked up just for the SB.

Absolutely.

Some of these plays have no WRs turning their heads within 5 yards, so I think the hot-read is "Jalen, make a guy miss and make a play".

Option at 31?  Haven't heard much about him in this group.  Big strong long corner.  Read somewhere he also had the most burst out of anyone at the Senior Bowl

49ers can keep a really strong roster and sign free agents if they keep the two QBs on rookie deals.  They're under the assumption Purdy can continue as starter, and if they're wrong then they have Trey Lance.  Carr isn't a significant upgrade over Purdy/Lance.

Yeah, it wasn't something they were just forgetting, It looked deliberate with whatever they were trying to do to counter the blitz. I could believe it from 2021, since he would routinely leave the pocket early and try to run. This year I felt he was much better about staying in it, and when he did have to leave he was looking down the field. Maybe the coaches felt he would do the same thing again and didn't include hot reads, but it seems weird to never adjust when this was an issue all year long.

Gainwell was their only real receiving back. Sanders has greatly regressed there and Scott has never really been that type. Seems more RB screens and hot reads would help slow the blitz down, which was a big issue against the 9ers and last year in the playoffs against the bucs.
