Yep. And he will absolutely keep kicking the can down the road because at some point, it'll be someone else's problem.

Why would it ever be anyone's issue though?  Nothing is stopping from any GM to keep doing this.

Howie isn’t a cap genius. He’s simply pushing money into the future, when the cap goes up and theoretically is less valuable than today’s cap space. It’s smart, but we are far from being in good cap shape.

Just about every team in the league now follows the cap model established by the Eagles. So Howie may not be a genius, but it is easy to make the argument he's the smartest GM in the league. It's not like a bunch of teams are scrambling to copy the Cowboys in how they have managed the cap.

Wherever it may be, what do you think CJGJ gets an average per year, 8-9 million?

Yeah, 5yr/$45M, but with two of those years being voids.

Rodgers is headed to the Vikings next offseason. Calling it now

Below are 2 charts.  1st is safety contracts signed so far this year.  2nd is a list of all safety contracts between Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell just to show who is getting paid and what.  I don't see a way where CJG gets more than Bates, who is now the 4th highest paid safety in the NFL.  But you have to think he's going to get a good bit more than Vonn Bell.  I'm looking at Justin Reid, Amani Hooker and Jalen Thompson as good measuring points for his contract.  All pretty much the same age as CJG but none of them produced even close to what he did in 2022.

With that being said, outside of Bates, safeties have not been getting top dollar so I'm hoping he's closer to $10 million/year rather than $12 million/year.

True.  That's why if I'm thinking longer term I'm drafting Hendon Hooker at #94 if he's still on the board.  No one would have thought Nakobe Dean would be available at pick #83 last year.

Yea, until the NFL is no more, these contracts and the money will just keep getting pushed back further and further.  There is no end date or due date where all of the sudden the Eagles are going to have to pay up.  It's phoney money although it isn't.

2,200 yards passing 15 TD's, 400 yds rushing and 4 TD's in 13 games last year. What exactly do you expect from a backup QB because you arent doing much better than Mariota.

Meh...call me crazy but I don't want quitters on this team.  The guy walked out on the Falcons after being benched for sucking.  So, I guess if looking for a sucky quitter, then you found your guy.

"On the season so far, Mariota has taken the Falcons to a 5-8 record in all honesty hasn’t looked good doing it. His passing yards, touchdowns and competition percentage all rank within the bottom half of the league and that’s before we mention, the fact that his nine interceptions rank seventh-highest in the NFL."

The timing of it says to me the Eagles likely tried to retain Minshew for the backup QB role.  After Minshew signed in Indy the Eagles pivoted to Mariota.

I'm not a Mariota fan at all.  The Titans instantly got better (demonstrably) when they sat Mariota down for Tannehill ... and Tannehill is meh.  The only time Mariota has looked competent in his career was a very brief stint (I think one game?) with the Raiders when Carr got hurt.

The trouble with this signing is we've seen through experience that Hurts misses 2-3 games per season.  Is Mariota a guy who can come in and win those games?  I think there were better alternatives out there.

We saw Minshew couldn't last season.

Agree with your premise, but Howie's creativity with the cap IS one of his strengths.

Looking around the league, most other teams now follow Howie and Mickey Loomis' lead regarding dead money and pushing cap hits into the future.

HELOC but now is not a great time due to the higher interest rates.

Minshew was fine against DAL and poor against New Orleans.  That's the result you're going to get with the vast majority of backup QBs.  I wasn't a Minshew fan either, so I'm not going to debate his relative effectiveness.  I wouldn't have been happy with Bridgewater, either -- we already know these guys aren't very good by virtue of them repeatedly losing starting QB jobs.

You think GM's never get fired and have infinite job security? That's like saying all coaches should just be trading future 1st rd picks for current year 2nd rd picks because there's nothing stopping any of them to keep doing it.

I like the Mariota signing. Not any of our first choice, but out of whats left, its solid.

I like the idea that the offense does not need to change when the backup QB steps in. Last year they tried not to change it, but no one respected the option of Minshew using his legs, and the offense just didnt work as well. Hell, even when Hurts played that one game where he couldnt/wouldnt use his legs the offense wasnt the same.

Now, theoretically, the concepts can work just as well regardless of which QB is playing.

On top of this, I love the idea of Dorian Thompson-Robinson as QB3. Now all 3 can use their legs. Thompson-Robinson has a great arm, and would have a year to develop in to an adequate backup before Mariota's contract is allowed to expire.

Funny that with Mariota, and DTR, Chip freakin Kelly can be operating Philly's QB factory.

I love how Howie takes loans that basically have lowering interest rates for the life of the loan.

How is that comparable?  What in the world is the benefit of trading 1st round picks for 2nd round picks?  Why the hell would anyone do that?

Plus my post went completely over your head.  The cap is so easily manipulated by pushing dead cap into future years and "kicking the can down the road".   Even after Howie the next GM can easily continue to do this.  There is no end date here where it must all come to a head.  Time continues to go on, they can just keep kicking it forward like Howie does.

Minshew looked a lot worse because of Quez. Most of his INTs really werent bad passes. it was just the WR being horrible.

However, this offense needs a running QB.

Interested to see how he does somewhere else. I’m guessing not as good but this isn’t a terrible gamble for Panthers.

He's replacing D'Onta Foreman who had a decent year for the Panthers.  Staley will help him get utilized appropriately.  He just has to stay healthy for them.  I think his production will be close to what they got out of Foreman.
