Would've liked to keep Pascal, but need to see the money. Not a huge loss though at some point they'll need to add another WR.

He fit so perfectly here. Pretty sucky he left.

It was a multitude of factors but I think we were drawing a line in the sand with the multi year deal from a cap perspective. We just created a ton of dead cap with the one year deals with Kelce, Graham and Cox plus the Slay extension. A multi year deal gives us a lot more flexibility especially since we still have quite a few gaps to fill which I'm assuming are going to be short deals as well.

I think Banner is right and that's pretty clear. If they wanted him back that badly, he'd be back. One year for 6.5 with incentives is not a big deal for a safety you think is important to keep.

And if they feel that way, then fine, but they just created another hole they needed to fill with not a ton of resources remaining. Would've been nice to just have kept him and focused on other areas.

If they didn't think he was worth it then their stance is their resources are best used elsewhere. Obviously we'll all be judging that as the season goes on.

Or they plan on putting Maddox back at safety and using Greedy/Jobe/Rookie in the slot.

I realize safeties are treated more interchangeably now, but Blankenship would fit more as a box safety, definitely doesn’t have the foot speed to be a single-high or a free safety.  The Eagles would need a safety with some speed who can cover ground to pair with him.

Maddox makes some sense, although I’d prefer someone with better ball skills and wingspan.  I wonder if the Eagles have any interest at all in trying to unlock Jonathan Abram’s potential

Stunned at the low contract that CJGJ got.  Very interesting... Seems that he was viewed around the league as a product of the Eagles, rather than the reverse.

At the $6.5M number I've seen, I'm not sure why the Eagles didn't match that.  I saw the tweet from his agency... Not sure I buy that, honestly.  Seems like they are just trying to cover their tracks after their client got what is perceived to be below market value.

The tweet basically called the Eagle's worse because the last season was for $17 million.  Implying the Eagles wouldn't pay the last season.  While that's not impossible, if he performed he would be much more likely to get a better extension with the Eagles.  I also don't see the benefit of the tweet in the sense that it possibly burns a bridge with a team that made him a multi-year offer.  If things don't work out in Detroit or he is a FA next season, you would think coming back to the Eagles would be a viable option. I wonder if negotiations went south and the agent didn't give Roseman a chance to match it.

Still not buying this. If it was truly "there’s only so much money” then are you telling me Marcus freaking Mariota was such a priority that they wouldn’t have just waited a few more days to see what happened with CJGJ? Because they got very close to the same money.

He would be nice but I can't imagine he would look at the Eagles as a good place to improve his opportunities.

Karl Brooks looked good during drills , there was no reason he should have been a combine snub . Late day 2 pick

I'd bet Howie values QB2 higher than a starting safety.

*if they don't think much of the safety.

The Eagles philosophy at safety has always been if they think a safety is a blue chip top safety, the Eagles will pay(offered Marcus Williams a big contract, were willing to pay Malcolm Jenkins). If not, they're going to pay their safeties peanuts. No in between. This is evident in them letting both Epps and CJGJ go.

I think Mariota was more of a priority than CJGJ at that point.  They weren't going into next season without an experienced back up and they priortized Mariota.

I do think they were limited by the salary cap after they re-signed Bradberry.  I am not sure what CJGJ was initially offered but my guess is it was more middle of the road than top 5 money.  Derwin James is $19 million per season and Justin Reid is $10 million.  It sounds like the Eagles' offer was closer to Justin Reid's number.  Reid is 13th in terms of annual value.

That’s what I don’t get. Other safeties have been signed for CHEAP since. Why did we sit those out?

Wondering if they have their eye on a trade candidate. Seams out of no where we trade for someone we didnt even know was available.

Howie isn’t paying a 2 for Byard. No chance.

Not to mention we cant afford his cap number. Hes making 13+ mill in base this year. I dont see Byard being an option at his number.

I'd much rather grab Johnson or Rapp and then draft one as well rather than make a trade at the S position.

A lot wanted CJGJ over Slay if given the choice

Sorry for the long post coming up.  Eagles currently have 8 CB on the roster and 3 safeties.

Darius Slay, James Bradberry and Avonte Maddox are your starting CBs.  All 3 are under contract for 3 more years.  If they all play those years out remains to be seen.

Josiah Scott and Zech McPhearson are the immediate backups.

Greedy Williams is going to be given every chance to prove he deserves playing time and could be the top backup when the dust settles.

Josh Jobe was a core ST player and looked good  at outside CB when in limited snaps.  Coaches have also singled him out numerous times so they are high on him..another outside CB.

Mario Goodrich was the practice squad project last year and most likely ends up there again.  He has good size.

Those numbers at CB tell me they aren't adding a CB high in the draft.  You bring in a 1st round CB and he's on the bench for at least 1, if not 2 years.  I know you draft for the future, but that's a bad use of investments to let your 1st rounder sit for 1/2 of his contract.

-Maddox isn't going anywhere and neither is Scott as his top backup.  Don't forget the way Howie thinks.  He looks at Josiah Scott as a 4th round pick, not the 6th round pick/Jameson Houston.  I'm not a Josiah Scott fan but he's a Howie trade asset...he's in a comfortable spot.

-Jobe as a core ST and potential top backup isn't going anywhere either. His draft profile also suggests that he's a good candidate to move to safety in the NFL.

That's 5 CB without talking about McPhearson or Williams.  McPhearson is going in to year 3 and not any closer to starting making any contribution outside of ST.

With all of that being said, you wonder if they look at McPhearson or Jobe as potential safeties.  Greedy Williams, if he plays to his potential, makes them expendable to move positions.  Both players are 5-11 190.

Just spitballing and thinking of some ways to utilize players on the roster.  They still have quite a few holes to fill and not a lot of money.

Williams isn’t a candidate for S.  If any CBs, I would guess Goodrich or maybe Jobe.

McPhearson might be someone they give a shot in camp as well.

I wasn't huge on Witherspoon at 10 due to his size but if the plan is to put him in the slot (I know high for a 10 pick) to begin with and move Maddox to S I'm ok with that.

Trotter reporting the Eagles were given a chance to match and said no.
