One thing that's intereseting about some of the signings and this goes hand in hand with some things I've been posting about lately is the investments used for DB.

Howie is terrible at drafting DB and the Eagles really don't invest high draft picks in the position.  Roster has been loaded with guys drafted in the 4th round and below.  They've traded 3rd, 5th and 6th round picks for CB on the team.

The 3 DB they brought in have all been high draft picks.  None of them have lived up to their draft position to date but IMO, it looks like Howie is trying to bring in that upper to elite talent that he hopes can be tapped in to as Eagles.

Edmunds-1st

Evans- 2nd

Williams- 2nd

I am worried they play Edmunds out of position by having him play deep or in coverage a lot rather than in the box where he's proved at this point in his entire playing career that's where he is best suited. Would totally be like the Eagles to say hey we're smarter than everyone else, he's going to be a deep safety here. I'm holding out hope Desai has a plan for him to play in the box and be a weapon against the opponents run game.

Deserves?  Burrow, Hurts, Jackson, Herbert

Who would I give an extension to with current information and projected performance?  Jackson would definitely be last.  In fact, if I were the Ravens I’d be planning a way out and on to another QB

Yeah, I wouldn’t want to give Lamar a contract that leaves me on the hook for any more than three years. I guess for that reason alone, I’d have to put him last.

Can't measure heart, grit, work ethic, determination and all those other superlatives.

Precisely, which is why you have to shrink your early round pool down to guys who have the prerequisite measurables.

It's why Barnett was a disaster pick from the start. Small (real weight, not the inflated combine one), slow, barely requisite arm length. Grit, work ethic, etc. were off the charts, but betting on those over known characteristics of big time DEs? Bad move.

Only one of those top 10 won the SB and they did it relying heavily on free agents  (Shaq Barrett, JPP, Brady, Gronk, AB, Lenny, Suh, Jensen)

And White , David , Winfield , Dean , Davis  , Wirfs , Evans , Godwin , Marpet , Vea , Edwards , Golston ,Brate , Whitehead

I think the "he isn’t won anything” is lazy. Herbert is damn good. He’d be a sizable step up from Hurts with our weapons, OL, coaching.

Herbert is good but he clearly hasn't gotten any better since he came into the league.

He has great highlights, but eventually the "he just needs a better team around him to win" argument is going to turn into a question and not a declaration.

The present issue at safety is that Edmunds/Evans/Blankenship are all box safeties who will be targeted in coverage.  If 2 of those 3 are in the defensive backfield, it's going to be bombs away over the top.  If we are investing unending first round picks in the DL, I'd prefer not to require even one safety that is a glorified linebacker in coverage who needs to live in the box, but 2 such safeties will be a real liability.

I wonder if they have plans for Maddox as the deep safety, although that will leave them in need of a different solution for several games per season.

If they do go with Maddox at deep Safety, we almost surely will be in a crap or get off the pot situation with McPhearson.  And to a lesser extent with Jobe.

The turning point for me I think was the Niners NFCCG. Yes we knocked out their QBs but I think that’s distracted from what the Eagles did on offense. Hurts had their great LBs in cement the entire game. QB or not they would have folded eventually anyway.

I can’t think of another QB that could have pulled that off in that way. Mahomes torched them but in a different way and he may be the GOAT.

Not sure there is any rush on either guy. You need depth at corner, and they both may be career backups. Hard to see where an udfa and a late round pick should be expected to start.

Never too early to talk drat and QBs , next years class might be the best in decade . My fav 5

Pratt , very underrated , huge fan of his

Ward

Rising

Mccarthy

Rattler , I think he continues to bounce back in his second year at SC

I've kicked around the idea in my head with Riley Moss. I think he can be a good corner so probably no need to switch.  But something tells me he would make a nice safety.

I wonder if Ringo is better off at safety/slot duties. Keeping things in front of him where he can read and react may be better than him on the outside where he seems to get a little lost or not having that type of instinct. But he's really tough, could be good against the run and he seems to have enough athleticism and twitch to play in the slot and closer to the line of scrimmage.

Lamar Jackson is really well respected by his peers. It’s no surprise that he chose him. Honestly, though, how would you rank it? I certainly wouldn’t have Hurts first.

Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, Jackson

I keep seeing these suggestions about Maddox at safety.  Have the Eagles ever said they have any intention of doing this?  I can't recall.  I know he's played a few snaps there but I've never seen anything from the Eagles that says this is any part of their plan at safety.  Add to that Maddox's issues with staying healthy and it makes relying on him to be any sort of answer at safety a mistake.

Two things I'm just not grasping since the season ended.  Jalen Carter being a can't miss prospect and Avonte Maddox being moved to safety.  I'm not knocking you for suggesting it, I just don't see it nor do I see anything from the Eagles that makes it a conversation worth having.

I think you are reading more into my point than what is there.  Time to see if they are actually worthy of starting is what I meant.

No more of a mistake than relying on him to be any sort of answer in the slot.  The injury concerns exist no matter what position he plays.

I agree there.  I think a guy like Clark Phillips would be a great pick to replace Maddox TBH but I don't see it happening.  I think they are content with Josiah Scott.

They already were pretty close last year but feels like the Cowboys have the more complete roster at this moment in time.

The only notable "free safeties" that fit that bill are guys like Budda Baker and Kevin Byard. This is also a weak S class, so I'm not sure what to plan is then.

I'm hoping Howie is exploring trade options. Chinn, Savage, Winfield. Byard to a lesser extent.

Listened to Cossel talking about Edmunds at the start of free agency. Safe to say he wasn't too enamored with him.

CJGJ has the emotional Intelligence of a 5 year old. Nothing he tweets, says, or does should be taken seriously.

Burrow and Hurts are tied at 100 on that list. Pay them.

Herbert is at about 85. He throws pretty balls but he does not excel statistically or win yet. Go ahead and pay him but he's not those first 2 guys.

He's been the 12th, 11th and 12th rated passer the last 3 years with great WRs, a great receiving RB, and good TEs.

Lamar is a 65 and on the DO NOT PAY LONG TERM list. He's beat up and he's a moron. His skillset does not last and he's already played 5 years. His last outstanding year was 2020.

Lowballing his franchise tag was the right move for Ballimore and no one is going to pay 2 picks for him.

I'd rather have Daniel Jones than Lamar at this point. (I don't want either) I'd much rather see if Anthony Richardson is the next Lamar type.

Atlanta made the right move to figure out what they have in Ridder instead of destroying their future for Lamar. (no idea on Ridder but I'm sure Lamar is a dumpster fire)

Hurts and Lamar do not have the same skillset. Its lazy to say they do. Lamar is a runner who also throws (Atlanta Vick). Hurts is a QB who is also a running threat.

Russell Wilson is a better comp for Hurts than Lamar is.

Listening to Adam "things are fluid" Caplan last night and he said that the Eagles views Blankenship as a 3rd or 4th Safety. They like him a lot just not as a starter. Edmunds was brought in to play more of the Epps role and that the other S is still TBD. Take it for what it's worth.

Reading between the lines and IF Caplan's info is solid that would mean that the other starting S is going to either be Evans, a draft pick, or maybe even someone they sign or trade for down the road ala Bradberry/CJGJ from last offseason. This actually makes sense because as a lot of us were saying yesterday, Edmunds and Blankenship as a starting safety tandem doesn't make a lot of sense based on their skillsets.

So they do want to put Edmunds out in coverage rather than where he plays best, in the box against the run or closer to the line almost like LB?

He was benched, so hard to see how they are content with him.

We’ll see. Their 2 headed rushing attack has a broken lead member and a missing 2nd guy. They don’t have a third atm who can reliably fill in. They lost their #1 TE, and are again relying on oft injured Tyron Smith to anchor the blindside. Will Dak be able to get the ball to Cooks without leading the league in interceptions again?

The D will be better, but this was the umpteenth year in a row they collapsed down the stretch. GB, JAx, Was were all ugly and sloppy losses late in the year where they clearly had a huge talent lead over their opponents.

And now they fired the OC who got them to the best offense while Dak was healthy the last 2 years and gave that responsibility to Mike McCarthy, who said he’ll run more next year which doesn’t make a lot of sense based on their moves this offseason.

No way FredX was a "bad” pick IMO but it’s depressing to see the receivers we passed up in that draft to take him. But then the next year we got Lito, Sheldon and Bwest in the same draft.

Mike Lewis Too.
