I wonder how much the ability to sign a deal for Edmunds played into it.  They got Edmunds for a 1/3 of the cost.  Who knows whether it was the agent or CJGJ but they did not evaluate the market correctly.

We took out more trash this weekend. Publicly harassing VA (who saved the EMB and is trying to focus on the technology, marketing & ad revenue) will not be tolerated. Taking a fun football me

If they wanted to move on from him because they didn't think as highly of the player, fine. But I'm tired of this "we ran out of money" garbage, when you paid a mediocre backup QB essentially the same deal you could've paid CJ. Please.

All signs indicate they didn't value CJ highly. And if they did and allowed him to walk over a few million here or there, that's pretty dumb.

I'm not a big fan of Mariota, but you do need an experienced #2 QB option behind Hurts.  He's likely to miss a bit of time.

Im not reading it as a 1 vs 1 type of deal. It wasnt Gardner-Johnson vs Mariota. Or Cox, or anyone.

It was waiting on him, or being able to make all of those moves to fill out the roster. It was 1 player vs a whole bunch. A lot of opportunities could have passed in the days he waited to make his decision. He isnt worth missing out on multiple players.

He isn't worth missing a bunch of players on, I agree. But the Mariota deal happened like a day or two before CJGJ signed. It's worth potentially losing Mariota on, for sure. Mariota stinks. As a backup, he's fine, but if Hurts goes down the Eagles are Fed anyway. If they're that strapped for funds and couldn't afford both, then they should've risked letting Mariota go elsewhere and hold out a couple days for CJGJ.

But as I've stated before, I don't buy this. Because if Byard were released today and came to the Eagles and said "I want to play with my guy AJ Brown, and playing against you guys last year, I was really impressed by your team, I'll sign for you right now for one year 8 million" there's no chance the Eagles tell him "Sorry, we can't afford it."

I don't buy for a second they couldn't afford CJGJ. I don't think they valued him highly enough to put themselves in a pickle though down the road. I think they basically like having money available in case someone like Byard jars loose, or Jeffrey Simmons becomes available in trade or whatever, and paying CJGJ would close the door on some of those options and they didn't think he was good enough.

But the words they're putting out make it seem like they just didn't have the cap space.

Man, just reading that post by VA, and it’s amazing a grown man would stoop to that level and put that level of energy into being a total internet loser. The funny thing is it likely was by a poster who called others Betas and claimed that people take this place too seriously.

Good riddance.

People get on me for trolling sometimes, and I do sometimes, but in a sports way to F around, and I'm never mean or nasty about it or make it personal or start insulting people or making threats.

And if I ever went that way or if anyone else does, it's a sign you need to get offline for a while and cool down. Or a sign of deeper issues.

Corum, who returned to Michigan, benched 30 reps at 225. Best RB combo in college with him and Edwards

They can come to a verbal agreement without signing an offer sheet. It would be silly (stupid) to have everything lined up and then Lamar last minute to just say nvm after the trade processed. There's no benefit for him to do that at all, only detriment.

I'm not saying it's likely or will happen. The point is it wouldn't make sense for multiple teams to wait until after the draft and then go after him when they can go after him now and trade two future firsts (or whatever they want).

I get it and maybe I am obtuse about it but I just don't see the mechanics of the deal working.

I understand the process you have described, but I believe it results in the player’s current team getting more value from the acquiring team.

Well in this case yeah, the Titans are trading away a stud DT in his prime. They will be getting a nice package back. The eagles have to decipher if that's too much and will his contract also be too much. Not an easy decision at all. Odds are not in our favor this time.

Jeffery Simmons & Titans 1st for Marcus Mariota make the trade Howie

I personally didn’t mind some of the posters that were either causing the trouble or almost always involved in the trouble here in the blog, even though I haven’t posted as much lately I will say the blog has been way more peaceful and actually football related discussions minus any personal attacks. It’s been nice.

Valuing a player correctly at his market value doesn't mean we didn't value him highly.  We clearly wanted him back and made an offer.  But CJ wanted the bag and he was willing to roll the dice on Detroit giving it to him next year.  I don't think it was a coincidence that he managed to find himself on another ascending team on a one-year deal.  He's going to be back in the same boat he was in with us, only then he'll get to see if Detroit blinks and pays up.

What you have to keep in mind is that Hurts' contract is coming, soon, and it's gonna be a MASSIVE hit to the cap space.  At this point he may very well be content to wait and see what Burrow, Herbert, even Lamar Jackson does before he signs his deal.  If CJ wanted to reset the market with his deal and get a big chunk of it guaranteed, yeah it's not going to happen here.  But it might in Detroit because if Goff can't get it done this season, they're going to be aggressive getting their next QB in the draft.   With that rookie deal, it'll be much easier for Detroit to pay up.

He saw Zeke getting that rep at center and figured he better bulk up.

For real though, that's damn impressive and dude looks huge, getting David Boston vibes.  Really love his running style.  Is he still in the 205-210 range?

CB is the clear best option at 10. CB or trade back. Unless Carter is there then we have a decision but I'm very sour on him.

I don’t even know who else is worthwhile at 10. I’m not a fan of combine hero type players, Nolan Smith was not a top 10 player based on tape before he went to Indy. I agree on Carter or CB, but I’d go as far as to say still trade down even if Witherspoon is there; and then take Witherspoon when trades aren’t good enough

I think Witherspoon is worth the 10th spot. Gonzalez too. But if we could trade down 3-5 spots and pick up a day 2 pick I wouldn't hate a pivot to another CB like Banks/Porter. I feel better about a lot of guys between 15-20 that Im afraid we will reach for at 10 (looking at you Van Ness & Kancey).

If we don't go DT with first 2 picks I would be willing to bet a lot we somehow end up with Karl Brooks at some point.

I understand all that, but if you want a player that badly, you don't let a few million be the difference.

Ask yourself this: if Kelce and the Eagles were at an impasse over a contract and the Eagles went on to start signing other guys, do you think when Kelce's camp came back to the Eagles later on and said "Ok, we misjudged the market" they'd say "Sorry, we've moved on?" There is no chance in hell. Because they know how invaluable Kelce is.

Howie is known for doing everything he can to keep guys he thinks are vital. They may like CJGJ, but I don't think they considered him a key piece. There's a difference.

This draft sucks to have a top 10 pick

A backup QB who starts 2 games will have a bigger WAR than a competent starting S in a normal year.

I think we’re all in agreement that whether it’s a trade up or trade down at 10, it’ll be either OL/DL/CB. Now it’s just about navigating to which player at those positions fits what Eagles typically look for.

I do think it is kind of fun to wonder if JSN is a target for us at all in the first as a potential weapon in the slot/big time WR depth. I doubt it happens, but it’s a fun thought. Brown/Smith/Goedert/JSN would be impossible to stop. Then imagine they add Gibbs also. Quez is still a respectable deep threat. Lmao our offense would be legit unstoppable

Backup QB is a top 15 position on any NFL team
