If you had to choose between giving Hurts the extension he got and drafting Anthony Richardson or Will Levis, what would your choice be?

None of the above. False dichotomy

Think Budda would come here with out reworking his deal?  Would be amazing if he could be had for a 3rd.  Being the nice guy I am i'd even include K'Von Wallace

No. That's the whole reason he wants out. Like the tweet said, the reason he could be had for a 3rd is only because the contract that goes with it.

Why would he give them a deal? What QB even does that? They want to get paid

Brady would always leave some even if he got paid other ways. He wanted to get his, so he got it. I don't like the no trade thrown in on top of it. It's not like he took 47 million and there was a NTC.

Texans would be wise to trade the #2 pick while on the clock.  If the Panthers are dumb enough to draft Bryce Young #1 (I'm dubious, as Schefter is an ESPN employee, and the network wants intrigue to increase viewers) then the Texans should draft Stroud #2.

If the Panthers do the right thing and draft Stroud, then the choice becomes draft Will Anderson at #2 or trade out.

Dude its the annual predraft fiction

We don't know how it is structured. That's one thing.

He won't be the highest paid player in the league for long. That's another.

If you think he's that good and is committed to the team, why would you worry about a no-trade clause? Don't you want the guy to be your QB for a long time? That's another.

It's the going rate.

It's the power going to the player in a league where that isn't the norm vs baseball or hockey. I don't like that. If he plays well that's great. If it's another Wentz where he gets a big deal and goes to hell then they are stuck with where he'd go on top of a limited trade market to begin with. I just don't like it thrown in.

They did get a discount.  That's only a 5 year deal.  That could have been a deal that would have paid him until he was 35 and we would have been stuck with an aging QB.

That's not a discount. Hurts took a standard deal. One player has a contract longer than 5 or 6 years, and its Mahomes, who is an outlier.

While i mostly agree with this chart, the numbers can be a bit misleading without a little context.

Like, for instance, how many interior Olineman every year are rated as top 10 prospects? You have to draft them lower because they’re only found lower. A lot of guards who get drafted are college tackles that were docked because they didn’t translate to the NFL stage.

So when I look at RB, I think, "we can just wait because draft position isn’t a great indicator of how he’ll turn out”, whereas G would work differently. If there was a legitimately elite top 10 talent at guard in a draft, you want to gobble that guy up. Both positions end up lower on a graph like this, but they got there in 2 very different ways.

Yeah it was a completely normal top QB contract in line with year to year escalation. If you want give him props for helping the team, it’s that he didn’t push to wait until we saw what Dak/Burrow/Lamar/Herbert got. The first guy who signed was always going to be the best deal

IIRC Brady was paid by his foundation if the rumors and reports were correct

In regards to Baker, how many box safeties are we going to go after? We need a guy who can play single high. Baker can do it, but it's not what makes him elite.

Yeah, but did I expect him to give them a discount? I hoped but not bad at $51 even if I don't think he's worth that. I'm a fan of the team vs any player and I just don't like when they don't have the power. If they were going to give that up I'd have expected a lower number. One or two years less on a deal doesn't do it for me. We'll see. Not the biggest issue in the world but I just don't like it. I'm also not a fan of that becoming the norm in the NFL like baseball or hockey.

Just showing up.

Wondering if folks here are upset that we have a franchise QB and need to pay him.

This narrative of "Brady always took less for the betterment of the team” needs to stop. If Hurts wants to create a wellness company that the team can syphon money into to circumvent the salary cap or marry a model worth 9 figures, then he can take a more team friendly deal.

Local visit so won’t count against the 30.

I suspect you’re right, but I still kinda find it distasteful that Penn State is considered a local college team. They’re three hours away, dammit. Yet so many people view them as the home team around here. Meanwhile, I hate them about as much as I hate Villanova basketball...which is considerable.

Much rather Devin White than Budda if we're going to make a splash

I really don't get the complaints about Hurts' getting overpaid or not taking a discount. Kyler Murray signed a 5 year extension last offseason: $230.5 million with $160 million guaranteed. The salary cap from 2022 to 2023 went up by ~8%, from $208.2 million to $224.8 million. So if Hurts got the same deal adjusted for inflation, it would have been $248.9 million and $172.8 million in guarantees.

~$7mm more in guarantees and total value for Hurts vs. Murray is a steal, especially since the Cardinals could have used the 5th year option on Murray. Once you account for that, you can argue Hurts took less.

Sure looking like the Lions got the better part of that deal.

Depends on if you think a SB victory is worth it

Surprisingly yes.

I’m excited, and relieved. Hurts extension gets done quick, before the draft, and now we don’t have to worry about any potential contract drama there. Got the deal done before Burrow, Lamar, and Herbert. Howie did great.

The blog as of late

Baker is not only a box safety but also wants a raise from the monster deal he already had. This is not a Howie Roseman move.

Kevin Byard is a multiple All-Pro, legit free roam deep safety; 29 years old and will cost much less than Budda. That’s the play

Get back to me in 1-2 years.

$50m is the new magical number for franchise qbs.  One qb in the NFL has proven to be worth that money and proven to be dominant enough to win a SB with a less talented roster, which is necessary with that level of cap hit.

We’ll find out if Hurts can enter Mahomes territory and compete for a SB despite an inferior roster to what he enjoyed in 2022.  And make no mistake, he’s going to have an inferior roster moving forward.

He silenced the doubters and proved how good he can be.  At $50m, now he needs to prove he can be Mahomes.

Yeah, that was implied. Hurts for Murray money is a great deal for the Eagles.

I agree with you here. Hurts played amazing this year, proved he’s good enough to be the guy. Now consistency is the key, as well as being good enough to carry the offense. It’ll be something to observe. Luckily I think he has the mental makeup to achieve that
