I've been on record as saying I think they go Smith.  He has the traits and the character they like

He came off as a very impressive young man from what I could see during his podium session at the combine.

We took out more trash this weekend. Publicly harassing VA (who saved the EMB and is trying to focus on the technology, marketing & ad revenue) will not be tolerated. Taking a fun football me

Gonna have to tear the deal up before 2027 with an extension, but the next 4 years are very cap-friendly.

Load em' up Howie! let's maximize this 4 year window.

This is pretty interesting if true. Hurts essentially got a 3 year extension that then pushes the Eagles back to the table if he performs well? He won't have that $81mm cap hit in 2027 since that would be about 24.5% of the cap. So if Hurts performs, the Eagles will almost be forced to extend/restructure then. If he falls apart by 2027, they will be taking a fairly big cap hit but don't think it would cripple the team just like Wentz's record dead cap didn't cripple them.

Dare I ask what year 5 looks like?

Time for an extension and restructure

Yep, this is what I thought after seeing the cap hits. Howie is creative, but he has his tendencies. Just like how he started doing void years but then even doing it on guys like Kerrigan, White, Steven Nelson etc. this is how he has been doing contracts with Reddick, Brown and Bradberry.

Interesting - I thought Howie would be limited to a 5yr structure for the bonus but he managed 7.

Yeah, if you haven't watched it, you need to.  The guy just oozes character, teammate, friend, leader.

Smith at 10 would be an excellent pick.  I think I would be most happy with him or Witherspoon (close 2nd).

Hasn't he played exclusively on the left side?

Mailata goes to RT and Jones on the left.  I think he has the most potential.

Broderick Jones for me. Seems like the only guy with the potential to be a multi-time pro bowl OT.

Yup - if we had to pencil in a rookie starter today I’d likely go with Paris Johnson, but given the luxury of time Jones looks to me to have the most upside.

I wouldn’t move Mailata. Jones would be behind Lane Johnson anyway, so he’d have time to learn the footwork at RT and be a good backup at LT.

I wouldn’t switch things up just because Andre Dillard had two left feet.

I’d disagree. If this is the structure it would cripple them, which is why I think they are banking on past 2027. Wentz didn’t cripple them because they didn’t touch anything beyond his extension. He was $30ish million in dead cap if I remember. This would be a doozy. If they post June 1st him in 2027 it would be $30M dead in 2027 and $80M dead in 2028. Or they could take an absurd $110M in dead money all in one year. It would depend on if those options are all fully guaranteed or if they could get out of maybe the 2026 option bonus if it’s not fully guaranteed before a certain date.

Why mess with Mailata after years of playing and playing well on the left though.

He is limited to 5. But when you schedule a bonus to be paid 2 years from now you can spread that bonus 5 years from when it’s been paid.

For anyone interested in contract structure, this is basically a loophole Howie exploits. You can build in "option” bonuses but fully guarantee them, which completely eliminates the "option” aspect to them, as they aren’t options at all. But it benefits players as well as the team, so since it’s a win-win this is a loophole no one likely would ever want to close. The only thing that could void this is some type of player suspension.

I assume if you cut the player before the "option” it accelerates to the current year for cap hit purposes?

It allows richer franchises to borrow from the future to accelerate spending, so the loser might be competitive balance if other poorer franchises can’t keep up.

Depends if the cut is designated pre or post June 1st, and assuming it’s guaranteed of course.

The player doesn’t get the cash until when the bonuses are exercised. So Hurts isn’t getting all this money today/tomorrow. He’s getting his signing bonus right away, then he’s getting his 2024 option bonus on some date in 2024, his 2025 option bonus paid on same date in 2025 etc etc. This actually helps cash poor teams as they can pay smaller bonuses annually vs a monster signing bonus all at once. It just also is a benefit for cap purposes.

Unless if all the guaranteed stuff needs to go in escrow, then yes it would benefit a more successful franchise which Eagles are.

What do you want the dude to do? Like seriously, he has checked off every box. That was beyond an elite SB performance, you are mad at this point that he is successful.

You clearly have not been reading Toast’s comments over the past 18 months on what he expects from QB play.  You are making his generic comments personal. They aren’t.

I'm a strong NO on Charbonnet.  Smooth runner but lacks explosiveness.  Plenty of other RB I'd take before him.

That is my take on Charbonnet as well.

Maxey is just...amazing.  Half the time he looks so uncoordinated out there but he's so good.

Maxey Fox Monk … repping Kentucky well.

If Julian runs the team by then a $110 million dollar dead cap hit might get Howie fired. Hopefully the kid is as generous as his dad.

I posed the hypothetical because the choice is to either pay the money to Hurts or draft a new QB. Further, if the Eagles were not extending Hurts this offseason it would be because the team did not have success last season. As far as outcomes for this past season, I don’t think any of would have put losing in the Super Bowl but having Hurts playing at an elite level as a bad outcome. Are you suggesting they should have drafted instead of Smith or trade for Fields?

Neither
