You really don't get that part of the world - Ukraine and Russia historically had been one for centuries.  The Russian state actually started out as Kievian Rus.  Ethnically and religiously, you have Russian Orthodox people in the eastern part of the country, and Roman Catholics in the rest of the country.  The borders are fluid.  A bad settlement is better than a hot war.  Let both parties declare victory, iron out the terms of peace and stop the fighting.

Making a deal isn't wrong but 1) You dont leave your allies hanging 2) You do it from a position of strength and 3) You most certainly dont pull a Neville Chamberlin and give an autocratic dictator everything he wants. Just encoruages repeating that behaviour.
