I'm going to quote you a second time so the civility on your part didn't get lost in the discussion. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” It does not say separation of church and state or the abolition of religion from government. They didn't want a clone of the king and the Church of England. They didn't want the government to dictate people's beliefs or control religions, hence Jefferson's Danbury Baptist letter. Like many things, they were protecting against the intrusion of the government. It probably also had something to do with local leaders burning people at the stake and throwing them in rivers. The wall statement in the Danbury letter is where people get the separation from, not the Constitution. The funny thing, which shows they are taking it out of context, is Jefferson went to church in the Capital Building, where they held church services. If he was so against things to the degree people want to suggest and believed in the absence of religion in government, then why did he attend church literally in the Capital where Congress met? The oath of office on a bible with "so help me God" came from Washington. So if there is supposed to be an absence of religion in government, then why do people get sworn in on a bible and say so help me God?
