What in the world is this?

Nobody really cares about the NBA regular season, at least not until after the All Star break.

It's just a way to hopefully get some interest and attention.

All the other leagues besides the NFL would never do it but they should shorten their regular season and shorten playoff series to best of 5.  Any NBA season of 50 games and best of 5 series in the playoffs would create more drama and more sense of urgency.

That's the big worry, this team has a window and when it closes it's going to close hard. I expect Lurie to propose unlimited cap or unlimited June 1st designations at one of the upcoming Owners meetings

This isn’t going to lead to some major cap collapse unless the players we’re paying don’t work out like after 2017. But 3 years ago we were also near or at the top of kicking the can and in 2021, 2022, 2023 our cap is still very manageable.

I believe by 2030 this will be recognized as the standard practice for contending teams. Howie just need a little more time for proof of concept

Wild stat:

Carolina Panthers have never had back to back winning seasons in their existence of a franchise. But they do have a 3 year divisional championship streak anyway (2013-2015)

I think by 2030 big time free agents will have realised that signing a big 5 year contract for the Eagles means you'll have to be on the books for 8 years to make the money because Howie has to restructure you annually from year 3.

Like I said they'd never do it.  Less games is less money.

I remember doing a study a few years ago which looked at W-L record from year to year looking to see which teams were the most consistent. If I recall, the Vikings were. Think about it. They're almost always pretty good without being great, yet they never seem to outright suck. On the other hand, the Panthers were BY FAR the most inconsistent team. They'd go (roughly) 2-14 one year, then go 8-8, then go 15-1, then 7-9, and 4-12, and 11-5. Like a ping pong ball back and forth. Weird.

Trouble for the Vikings is, never dipping too low means that they miss out on the highest of high end prospects.  Carolina's dips means access to top talent from time to time.  Granted, both are horrible places to be.   The Panthers are poorly run, so they can't sustain anything.  And the Vikings are poorly run, which is why they can't get over the hump of being more than a borderline playoff team from year to year.

Are we going to have to wait until preseason for the Kelly green uniforms?

That's not how it works. Being "on the books" means nothing to the player and it is not reflective of the actual money they are getting put in their pocket. If anything, it's going to be attractive to big time free agents because it means Howie is going to cut them a fat check every year and pay them money upfront.

Don't the restructures work to their advantage because it essentially takes salary and turns it into bonuses so the bonus money can be spread out over more years.

There isn't a lack of drama in the NBA playoffs.  They have one of the beat postseason in the league.  Shorter series is a gpd awful idea.

There's some speculation they might release them on Saturday? It's their 90th anniversary. Nothing but guesses at this time though.

Depends who you ask.

They have the worst playoffs of any of the major sports.

Just tune in the last 2 minutes of any NBA game and you'll get the gist of it -- even though it's 45 minutes of real time.

Going well in giants land

But the players couldn’t care less about how long they are on the Eagles’ books.  They only care about getting the cash up front.  As long as their cash isn’t prorated, they and their agent(s) are happy.

I entirely disagree. It's by far my second favorite postseason of any of the sports.

The casuals like you that answer shorter seasons I don't care at all about appeasing.

All sports leagues have a fundamental problem.

More games = more money.  That's all well and good, but more games generally comes from more teams in the playoffs, more regular season games, and results in a devalued regular season that doesn't justify meaningful interest...or fan investment/money.

The NBA is one of the worst offenders for a useless regular season.  The solution to getting people to tune in before the playoffs is to make the regular season more intriguing, not to create a sideshow tournament.

I like the full 7 game series.  But the playoff field needs to be cut down.  And something needs to be done to more heavily incentivize seeding.

The NFL is gradually going down this path with a larger playoff field and only one top seed with the bye.

Whoa, 1989 was the last time the Browns had a better record that the Steelers. Pete Rozell was still the commissioner
