EMB Blog: 2023 Camps and Preseason - NO POLITICS

Okay, I was looking at the Depth Chart and had the following question I’d love to hear the Blog’s thoughts on:

(1) Book vs McGee … who do you prefer?

(2a) Scott … keep or trade?

(2b) Scott or Sermon or a 4th RB not currently on the roster?

(3) Do we want the "light to go on” for Devon Allen?

(4) Does our O-line depth NEED to be upgraded?

(5) Three DEs? Or four?

(6) Is Milton Williams a legitimate depth player at DE?

(7) Carter, Davis, Williams, and Cox are all DT locks.  Of the remaining players who do you want to see on the 53-man roster.? Street? Oromo? Tuipulotu? Noah Elliss?

(8a) Can Patrick or Kyron Johnson be anything other than SAM depth?

(8b) If "no” can Howie get trade value for either of them?

(9a) My ideal LB depth chart is Dean and Christian Elliss starting, with VanSumeren and Morrow as depth.  Thoughts?

(9b) Bradley is cut and the light has finally gone on for Taylor, so Taylor and/or one of the two Johnsons is LB #5.

(10) How many CBs do we keep, and how many Safeties?

(1) I really need to see them in this offense. We picked Book up too late last year to actually see him and McKee is not really a great fit for our current offense on paper. I just want to see if either of them can move the offense competently before making a call.

(2 a&b) I really like Scott as depth and he's been getting better and better at KR for what that is worth these days. He's a good teammate and a willing role player.

I'm looking forward to seeing Sermon get some work this preseason. Last year, Huntley got a bulk of the work in preseason and I expect Sermon to be that guy this year, while we rest all the "locks." Sermon isn't a "big back," but he has some tough running qualities. The most impressive is his stiff-arm. Hopefully he showcases that a bit in his opportunities.

(3) It never hurts. Allen thinks he's faster than anyone in the league. Who wouldn't want to see that? He's an older guy, though, and he needs to be able to contribute on special teams to deserve a roster spot.

(4) Need? no. I expect every backup to improve the longer they are here.

(5) Last year we unnecessarily traded for Quinn for depth. I'd rather not feel too light here heading into the season and see us throw away another day 2 pick for a player that probably won't be anymore productive than Barnett.

(6) I think he has the versatility if needed, but will still see most of his snaps at DT.

(7) I haven't been all that impressed with Tuipulotu thus far. Street is a solid depth guy and Ojomo is the kind of guy I think will develop into a starter in 3 years. I just really like smart players. I'm rooting for Ojomo.

(8) P. Johnson wasn't terrible on very limited snaps and K. Johnson was really productive as a pass rusher in college. Being able to draft N. Smith makes them expendable. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some late round value out of either of them.

(9a) Obviously, I expect good things from Dean. I also think Morrow can match White's impact last season. Elliss  has flashed in his limited opportunities, but I can see him taking more of an Edwards-style progression as a player. I'll be surprised if he's a starter this season if the others are healthy. But he'll be an important ST player and will come in to spell guys when he can.

(9b) I'm not counting Bradley out just yet. I think he might be every bit the player people think Elliss is. Some of these fringe roster decisions have to come down to special teams play and Bradley and Elliss are both more important to ST than Taylor or the Johnsons.

(10) Bradberry, Slay, Maddox, McPhearson, Jobe, Ringo,  Blankenship, Brown, Edmunds, Wallace. The only way I think this plays out different is if injuries are a factor before the season begins.

(10) How many CBs do we keep, and how many Safeties?

5 corners (Slay, Bradberry, Maddox, and 4 safeties.

1) I don't know how anyone can have a preference at this point without having really seen either.  Neither were on the team during the preseason last year.  I'd lean towards the rookie probably if I had to pick.

2) If Scott is one of the 4 best backs then you keep him.  His very real big game prowess in Giants games is very valuable and can't be denied.

2b) Sermon has shown nothing to to earn the right over Scott.  Sermon would have to have a great preseason.  I don't see it because Boston Scott is better.

3) Why wouldn't you?  Also he was great last preseason as a gunner on special teams.  I didn't get why he didn't make the roster on that alone given how awful our special teams has been for years now.  I hope they give him an actual chance at punt and kick return in preseason.  If he can be both the kick and punt returner while also providing great play on special teams coverage unites then that's a great special teams player to have.

4) Maybe at tackle.  Really depends on how some of the young players look.

5) Depends on if you consider Nolan Smith part of that group.

6) Absolutely

7) Another question where you can't really answer it until seeing how they look in preseason.

8A) No other than special teams fodder.

8b) Not except for one of those late training camp/before cuts that does one of those trade a player they are going to cut for a player on another team that they were going to cut sort of deals.

9a) Wait and see how they look this summer.  A lot of people high on Ellis but I think Morrow and Dean is the likely result.

9b) Is this a question or just a thought?  Because Bradley has not been cut.

10) 6 CBs (Bradberry, Slay, Maddox, Ringo, McPherson & Jobe) & 4 safeties (Blankenship, Brown, Edmunds & not currently on the roster depth safety picked up after roster cuts or in scenario laid out in the answer of question (8b).

Zuckerberg’s Twitter Rival Is Already Censoring People For Questioning Gender Ideology (msn.com)

^Not trying to spark a political debate in this thread. I'm just pointing out that Threads hasn't been all that "welcoming" to conflicting points of view. I don't see everybody moving there.

It's early in this new "rivalry" to predict who will be the winner, but it's been a bad week or so for Twitter and, IMO, Zuck dropped the ball on welcoming the twitter masses during Threads' debut.

This thing is wild. It just looks so real but fake at the same time. The experience of concerts inside is going to be another level. Not sure how I feel about never being able to escape it if you're actually in Vegas though.

Apparently they are planning one in London too. The Madison Square Garden Group owns and built it. You have to wonder if they have long term plans to do something similar to MSG.

It’s Vegas. Will be a "Women to your door” ad in a year.

Phils are on an absolute tear right now

Tied the franchise record for consecutive road wins.  13 ties the 1976 team.  Tomorrow they have a chance to set a new record.

Helluva game tonight.  Hoffman got the job done that needed to be done.  And Pache finished the job.

Question/s for the blog…1) who will be the more impressive DT this season, Davis in his 2nd year…slimmed down a bit and reportedly dialed in.  Or Jalen Carter the rookie?

2) Give me your percentage chance that both of these guys live up to their potential and become a historic DT tandem

1) Jalen Davis

2) 66.6666667%

Easy now. Phils fans are fair weather and only come out in October per RTK.

Being coy with 1) or which one did you mean?

Yep. And a lot of this streak is role players stepping up. Bullpen has been phenomenal and the back of the lineup guys keep coming up clutch.

Dallas Goedert was overwhelmingly the most consistently high value receiver in the nfl

The only thing that can stop Dallas Goedert is his own health.

Eagles would likely and I would hope sign at least 2 of the 3 players to new contract in the upcoming years: AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith & Dallas Goedert.

All 3 would be amazing but I'm not sure that happens.  Just one would kind of suck but at least they kept one.  None of the 3 would be a disaster.  So let's say they just end up re-signing two of them.  Who are the two?

For awhile I thought it would be AJ and DeVonta and I still think that.  But if Goedert can start staying healthy for full seasons then I would think they need to keep him and then make a decision between AJ and DeVonta.  AJ is a monster but I think DeVonta's game might age a bit longer.

I think it's a year early for AJ and DeVonta. They have DeVonta's 5th year option that gives them some room with him. Where they need to focus this year is Landon Dickerson, Josh Sweat, MAYBE Milton Williams and I still think Swift gets some sort of 2-3 year deal.

Bullpen has been nearly perfect during this stretch!

The 2020 draft class, Hurts aside, was bad so there weren't any viable extension candidates.

Next up is the 2021 class (at the end of this upcoming season): Smith, Dickerson, Milton, Gainwell. Gainwell is a RB, so we can wait until he's a UFA. Milton Williams is the type of player that will sign a big contract elsewhere. He's not a starter here, but would start for other teams. He'd bring back a 4th or a 5th since DL get paid in free agency. Smith will get extended because Howie never lets those players walk.

The hard one for me is Dickerson. He's very good, but his injury history makes a 2nd contract very tricky. I'd rather trade him at the end of next year than extend him. Let somewhere else deal with it. I think Howie will want to extend him, despite knowing the risks.

Sweat is signed through 2025.  Id think an extension would come in 2024.  Same for Goedert.  I agree Dickerson gets extended this season.

Sweat is only signed through 2024 and his cap hit next year is $18 million. He's a prime candidate for an extension.

What will be interesting is to see what they do with Reddick. His contract runs through 2024, when he's 30 but his cap hit will be $21 million with a $19 million dead cap hit. If he's traded, they save $15 million. Nolan Smith will be waiting for that spot and they are going to have AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Landon Dickerson, Josh Sweat, Dallas Goedert and other young core players they will need to be locking up.

Out of Brown, Smith, Dickerson, Sweat, Goedert and Reddick...the only one that has what appears to be a capable replacement is Reddick.

Yep, thought i saw 2025 for Sweat.  Extension coming.
