I was looking at Football Outsiders the other day and they had a list of their 100 best players in the draft (show you 10 and 90 behind paywall)

Carter at 2 overall was no surprise.

Ringo at 10 overall gave me a double take.  (he's big and fast and they think the lateral movement issues are exaggerated)

There was a rumor a few months ago leading up to free agency that Trae could already be available.

I suspect Ringo had issues with the reality that he was a fourth round pick nd at that salary rather than his projected first round level.  Now he can take two courses, continue to believe his draft clippings and not put in the work to excel (see Jalen Reagor or JJAW, for example) and flame out early, or he can focus on the way the NFL rewards performance for those who exceed their draft status (performance based pay distribution) and second contracts.  He need look no further than Marcus Epps, who got close to $900k last year and a nice second contract.   The time he took to come to grips with fourth rounder money is concerning to me as a suggestive lean towards the former, not the latter.  The sooner Ringo realizes he has earned nothing at this point in the Not For Long NFL, the better chance of getting a chip on his shoulder that propels him towards playing time and then success.  Right now, he has the best chance to flop of the 2023 draft choices.  He’s joined by two 5 star HS recruit CBs that were signed as UDFAs this year.  All should look a Blakenship and Maddox for inspiration.

I don’t think it’s a matter of anointing Herbert. I think it’s more simply that he absolutely passes the eyeball test. Forget the W-L record (let’s not revisit the Matthew Stafford argument) and just watch the way the guy plays. He can do it all.
