I had such high hopes for him. Too soon man.

To be fair, we DID get a late 6th rounder for him.  So not a complete waste

Yea but we would have gotten more if he took the original trade. Instead he boycotted the trade to the Browns and screwed us more.

William Smith was also in that.  He was a real life tough SOB; world champion arm wrestler, amateur boxer, weightlifter, etc., etc.  His bio reads like the most interesting man in the world:

He was also in Darker Than Amber with Rod Taylor, another real tough guy. Taylor played the classic character, Travis McGee.

Initially rated R in the United States, in 1971 it was edited and re-rated GP (now PG).[10] The film was considered graphically violent for its time, especially the fist fight scene that ends the film, between Rod Taylor's Travis Mcgee and the film's villain, Terry (played by William Smith). Director Steven Soderbergh said the fight's ferocity was considered "jaw dropping" for its era.[11] With the cameras rolling Rod Taylor hit William Smith who retaliated in kind,[12] and a staged fight scene became a real fight. Smith later reported that Taylor was "a very tough guy" who broke three of his ribs while he broke Taylor's nose.[13]

True.  But we did end of turning that 6th into Arrelious Benn so again, not a complete waste.

And that 7th we also got as part of the Benn trade?  Used that to take Jordan Poyer.

And with that gentlemen, you may start your weekend drinking.

...and let's not forgot that we also have been treated to this back and forth recap which is very likely the most valuable part of the history of this chain of events

RIP. Always loved seeing his highlights

Keep checking, you may eventually find it

This is interesting to see and goes along with ST roster spots.

Nick Boyle, former TE with the Ravens, is trying out for the Steelers to be a long snapper.  Boyle was one of the best blocking TE in the NFL before his knee injuries and also wasn't terrible on the receiving end either.

https://www.steelernation.com/2023/05/16/steelers-afc-north-nick-boyle-new-position-fisher-price-hoop

Rick Lavato is not in danger of losing his job but what if a guy like Boyle could become a successful long snapper and be a teams TE3 and long snapper?

Will there ever be a team that changes the way they use their roster spots for guys on special teams?  If Ty Zentner wins the punting job and eventually shows he can handle kick offs as well AND there was a way to get a long snapper who doubles as TE3, two roster spots just opened up.

This will never happen and quite frankly, for all of the back and forth we have about the bottom of the roster guys, there are many weeks the Eagles don't even have a full 53.  Extended PS, along with the call up rules have made roster crunches not as important.

Boyle can't move. That's why he's trying out as a LS. He's not even a TE4 at this point unfortunately.

Doesn't it strike you as significant that in the two years Gainwell has been here he has clearly taken away targets and receptions from Scott?

79 targets vs. 22. 56 receptions vs.18. 422 yards in receptions vs. 98.

In the playoffs it's the same story: 14 targets vs. 2. 12 receptions vs. 2. 104 yards in receptions vs. 10.

Blaine bishop over michael lewis…

How does having a punter who can kick off save a roster spot? You have one punter and one kicker on the team. One punts. One kicks field goals and extra points. And one of those two kicks off. Who the hell cares which one of them does it? And regardless of which one it is, it’s the same number of spots.

If you have a punter who can kick, you don't need a kicker.  Instead of 2 specialists, you have 1.  I'm not suggesting the Eagles do that, I was just looking at ways teams could get creative at saving roster spots.

The Covid season really changed the way teams use their practice squads and such.  Having a larger practice squad as well as 2 call ups per game day has almost, but not completely eliminated the stresses of the bottom of the roster juggling that goes on. There are plenty of weeks that the Eagles go in to Sunday with only 52 roster spots filled.  Frustrates me because I always think that gives them an opportunity to pluck a guy off another teams PS...but then they have to carry them on the roster so I also understand why they don't.

I was just wondering out loud, if any team would ever get creative enough with saving roster spots where they have an all-in-one kicker/punter and a LS that can be TE3.  If you have a LS that can be a position player as well, it gives you an extra roster spot.  You could use that for a guy you want to develop but not have exposed to waivers or on the PS ripe for the taking.

This is just a scenario and not something I'm suggesting the Eagles do BUT, if they had a position player like Boston Scott who could be PR/KR, a LS that could play TE3 and their kicker was all-in-one, that's 3 roster spots that open up for more OL, DL, CB, WR or having high risk projects protected on the 53.

If I were the opposition, I would identify that single point of failure at two positions and take the kicker/punter out at the most strategic point of the game

And that's why teams don't do it because of the importance of those positions and the risk of injury by being on the field more than needed.   Just fun things to think about while we wait for TC to start.

Namath was the 3rd or 4th best QB in a 9 team league depending on the year (Kemp and Hadl). He's the 2nd most overrated US athlete next to something called Taylor Hall that somehow won an NHL MVP. He had a big mouth and he was on a New York team. End of story.

LaMonica was 66-16-6 with 168 TDs and 138 picks. He was a 77.9 rated playoff passer.

Dawson was 94-57-8 with 239 TDs and 183 picks. He was a 77.4 rated playoff passer.

Namath was 62-63-4 with 173 TDs and 220 picks. He was a 54.8 rated playoff passer.

The Jets killed the Colts that day and it had more to do with Buddy Ryan's D plan and the run game than it did Joe Namath.

Matt Snell was MVP of the game (30 carries 121 yards and a TD and 4 catches for 40 yards) but Joe (206 yards passing, 2 sacks, no TDs no picks) got the popularity contest.

The league would be the same thing it is today if it took 1 more year for the Chiefs to crush the Vikings so that the AFC won a SB.

it would just be an alternate universe with a similar NFL but where Joe Namath was not in Chattanooga Choo Choo
