It makes tons of sense and would go a long way towards saving an important play of the game, rather than an automatic touchback.

This is 1 of the reasons I'd love to see the XFL become a partner of the NFL.  Could become a new NFL Europe for teams to designate players as well as an innovation test bed.

How does an onside kick work in that scenario?

That's a good question. I never saw that situation watching an XFL game. Didn't Jeff Lurie propose a new "4th down" onside kick a few years back? One play to get a 1st down=possession? I could be totally wrong on that but maybe that would be a solution. They would need to figure that out.

IMO, if losing the onside kick means saving the kickoff and making returns an actual thing again, I'm all for it.

I'm against removing a surprise onside kick from the game.

Jeffrey Lurie’s 4th and 15 rule, it’d have to go hand-in-hand with approving that kickoff option

Where is the surprise in that?

Pretty messed up players can gang up on someone and put them in the hospital or do what DeShaun Watson did and have far less consequences than opening up a sports betting app

There is a certain irony to it. You can beat someone up and get a sit down with the Commissioner to talk about your punishment.  Bet on tiddlywinks and it's sit out the season, son

If I recall correctly from the XFL, a team can decide that it want to try to retain possession of the ball.  To do that, they have a single untimed down to move the ball 20 yards down the field.  If the team succeeds, then they get to keep the ball.

It eliminates the surprise on-side kick, but it's a fun wrinkle.  I honestly liked the way the XFL did kick-offs this last year.  It takes a bit of getting used to, but it is good and sensible.  Honestly, the kick off hasn't been the same since they eliminated the wedge.

I respectfully disagree.

The onside kick to start the game is one of my favorite gambits!  (remember Opening Day 2000?) Wouldn't have nearly the same impact as the declaration of the intent and then the untimed down.  Or the onside kick to the start the second half of the Super Bowl - Saints vs. Colts?  Again... a single untimed down just can't replicate that drama.

That's not new.  Ask Pete Rose and Shoeless Joe Jackson.

Dude should be banned from immaculate grid.  He works for like 25% of the team-team combos

I understand where you're coming from and yea, losing the surprise onside kick is the big negative. However, with the way things are going, the KO and KR are all but being eliminated, almost to the point where if I recall, some in the league have mentioned just automatically putting the ball at the 20 or 25 to start the game. The Eagles have benefited from the onside quick a few times over the last few decades. The pickle juice game was incredible and that game never happens if they don't attempt and recover the opening onside kick to set the tone. Michael Vick's comeback against the Giants never happens without an onside kick. There are a few others I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting. Having David Akers helped a ton.

However, having kickoffs and returns is such a big part of the game.

Looking back, there were 6 KR TD's in 2022. In 2012 there were 15. Those plays can have a huge impact on the momentum of the game. Doesn't even have to be a KR TD, just a big return to flip field position.

Sidenote, I know Washington has changed their name but from a historical standpoint, seeing players that were Washington Redskins have their stats labeled as Washington Commanders just seems incredibly inaccurate. I get it, they changed the name but prior to last year, no one was ever a Commander. Brian Mitchell was a Redskin. Sidenote part 2, there's a Native American group that started a petition to change the name back to Redskins now that Snyder is out. Has over 40,000 "signatures". Probably amounts to nothing but it's interesting to see. Ron Rivera is even using the name again.

How does the XFL do kickoffs?

Each team has a player that starts at their sideline and it's a race to midfiield to see who gets the ball first but each player that is racing to the ball has to do so in a potato sack.
