Bohm was just letting off some steam... I think the fans got that.

Big spot for Turner here...  but once again, he doesn't get it done with RISP.

Only guys on this team hitting over .250 with Risp are bohm, marsh, castellanos and stott. Harper (.232), Turner (.221), schwarber (.202) and relamuto (.192). Huge issue bis year is those four aren’t nearly as good as previous years. Also missing Rhys who was .292 last year with Risp

No, he's definitely not.  Not by any actually meaningful stat.   Even according to that own stats meaning, he's playing at a BACKUP level, not starter level and definitely not at an average starter level.

He's been bad.  He can be better and has been pretty much his entire career.  If he raises his average to 0.275 the rest of the way and finds a way to actually hit with RISP, it would be huge for the team.

We're beating a dead horse here and we pretty much agree (Basically semantics) - and so does the "WAR" stat.  But if "C" is average meaning a 2.0 WAR, wouldn't "C-" mean around a 1.0 WAR?  D+ or less being a "replacement level player"?  Because D+ level players aren't MLB starters? :ph34r:

Generally speaking, the Steelers aren’t stupid. Under normal circumstances they’re not going to let a talented player out of their building. I think the most we can realistically expect from Edmunds is that he doesn’t suck back there. That’s probably not going to be the case for Wallace unfortunately. I’ve seen enough of him by now to know he's no good.

This is sort of my thinking, as well…

I agree with this. The original point wasn't that I thought it was a bad idea to cross train a backup lineman. I was simply pointing out that him being crosstrained was a pretty clear sign that the competition for the right guard spot was over, since you wouldn't waste valuable reps with your rookie starting right guard at left tackle.

If you mean for week 1, perhaps… but that competition is far from over long term.

See, that's not how my math works.  2.0 would be bottom tier starter, definitely not average.  5+ would be an A, 2.0 would be a D, at most, starter.   5 = A, 4 = B, 3 = C, 2 = D... and Turner's less than 1 equals F.

Different grading scales for starters and backups.  I'd say Sosa is a C level backup, but certainly not a C level player overall.  C level because his defense is good, he has plus speed as a pinch runner/defensive replacement, but not great with a bat, which is why he's a backup.  And yet, Edmundo Sosa has a higher BA, higher OPS, and has been more productive per at-bat in terms of HR and RBI compared to Turner.

So, we will just have to agree to disagree about how poorly Turner has played.  $300M contract, you expect much much more.   Hopefully this is a blip on the radar and next year he remembers that he can actually play the game.

Lorenzen doing what this team desperately needed today.  8 strong innings... and given how quick the 8th went, he could even start the 9th.

Every time I hear Lorenzen is on the Phillies, I think of the Pillsbury Throwboy.

That was cliff Lee-esque debut by lorenzen.

He allowed a very quiet 2 runs.  Not many base runners the whole time.

Took 3 of 4 and frankly probably should’ve won last night if Turner and the BP did their jobs. If they can just scorch earth the royals and nats he next 7 games would really be awesome.

@e-a-g-l-e-s eagles!  They got the 3-1 against the Fish.  Shame they didn't seal the deal last night and take the 4 game sweep.   Good enough to get 3 wins though.  Re-caught and passed the Fish in the WC, which is what they needed to do... and have a 1.5 game lead now.

Still gotta sweep the Royals this weekend.  Can't even give the Fish a chance to make up ground this weekend.

Nick, gotta teach the kid to catch with his hands and not basket catch.  Maybe he can work with Quez.

They let go of Hargrave.

Yup.

Steelers let go of Hargrave, James Conner, Kelvin Beachum, Emmanuel Sanders, Mike Hilton, Bud Dupree (good year before he got hurt).

If you want to go back further, Eagles killer Plaxico Burress.

What I get from this quote is what practice has all but confirmed so far. "A spot open".  This means my boy Blankenship has locked up and secured one of thevstarting safety spots.

Fairly certain it's been Reed's job to lose all along.

Tyler Steen taking left tackle reps with the second team today probably means that Jurgens is your starting RG this year.

No shocker there.

Correct. Math doesn't work that way, that's why MLB stats do not use the A - F "school grading system".  :P

According to the chart you posted (and yes, that's what WAR is):

2.0+ is MLB level starter.  (Meaning average)

Average in school is C or higher.  (That's what 2.0 + means in WAR.  It means minimum of 2 or higher)

(BTW I'm having fun with this.  Bored at work and can't watch the game so....)

This is the closest example I can come up with using a "school-like" grading system):

A+ = 8+ WAR  (Meaning MVP level/HOF level)

A = 7 WAR (MVP/Elite)

A- = 6 WAR (Elite)

B+ = 5 WAR (Somewhere higher than this would mean possible All-Star level player)

B =  4 WAR (Good player)

B - = 3 WAR (Above average player)

C+ = 2.5 - 3 WAR (Average to slightly above average player)

C = 2 WAR (Average player/Starter)

C- = 1- 2 WAR (Reserve/part time player)

D = 0 - 1 WAR (Bench player/borderline MLB player)

F = 0 (AAA player/available free agent/replacement level player)

So yep, Turner is playing at slightly below a C- level - according to this "conversion".   I guess we (sort of) agree after all.

And yes, he should be playing at a B+ level based on expectations, earnings, etc.

Ok, back to work for me - enough of these "voodoo" stats.  :P

Every interaction I see with Nick and his kids, he has next to no interest and is always annoyed with his daughter but really favors his son.

I think safety has more talent than LB, but I actually think safety is the one that could be more of a problem during the season. Mainly because I think it's a more important position and not as easy to hide. The Eagles are really counting on Blankenship being a legit starter this season, which is pretty risky given such limited showcasing so far, and after that it's up in the air. I could easily see a scenario where a few weeks into the season it's like uh oh, the Eagles overlooked this position. Especially since rightly or wrongly, CGJ was tops in the NFL in INTs last season, whoever plays this year is going to be compared to last year's safety play.

I am not worried about Blankenship. I expect him to play better this season.  He is a smart player and will put himself in places to make plays.  I do think new LBs combined with new safeties may make for more communication breakdowns.  I am hoping Morrow's familiarity with Desai and the veterans at CB will help.

Thats an absurd take, even for you.

With Blankenship, is there evidence that athleticism is an issue for him? Testing numbers are fine, not great or terrible. I've never watched him and thought he was slow, but that's all the reason detractors say he might not be legit.

This is a hilariously psychotic thing to say
