2022 and it's not even close.  Howie likes to let guys get a chance to redshirt.  Nakobe Dean is gonna have a chance to play this year.  Jordan Davis is supposedly greatly improved.  Cam Jurgens will get the chance to win a starting spot, too.

The 2023 guys will have their day, but I think they'll probably be eased in slowly.

How do we have any clue in May if Jordan Davis has greatly improved? Mini camp? Really? Do they even go full pads?

This reminds me of when Sean Considine put on like 30 lbs of muscle 3 weeks into the offseason

So what exactly was uninspiring about that forty second clip?

A SF hosted SB?  That’s become a terrible city that already has sub-optimal February weather.

Let’s not perpetuate the narrative that Barnett is a stud run stopping DE.  He’s high effort in the run game and doesn’t blow off the responsibility.   So I’ll give him that.  But he’s a 260lb soft physique that will get pushed around by any OT that gets his hands on him, just like most 4-3 edge rushers.

I'm pretty sure "solid" is the word I have used in this thread. People that were hoping for Reggie White 2.0 when we drafted him had unreal expectations. It's fair to want more from a 1st round pick, though. You can find solid players in free agency for reasonable contracts.

All I'm really trying to express is that, IMO, he has been worth having. Was he worth the draft picks we used? Probably not. But overall, he's been worth what he's been paid (not really counting last year since he missed virtually the whole season). Also, I don't feel like his cumulative penalty record is as big an issue as others make it. If it was double what it actually is, I would be concerned. Barnett is an aggressive player and that usually leads to a few penalties each year. It's not a surprise. I can only find stats back to 2006, but looking at Trent Cole:

2006: 3 penalties (1 roughing the passer, 1 personal foul, 1 "other" )

2007: 7 penalties (4 Offsides, 1 RP, 1 "other" )

2008: 8 penalties (4 Off, 2 RP, 1 unnecessary roughness, 1 "other" )

2009: 5 penalties (4 Off, 1 "other" )

2010: 9 penalties (3 Off, 2 RP, 4 "other" )

2011: 7 penalties (3 Off, 2 RP, 1 Personal foul, 1 "other" )

2012: 2 penalties (1 Off, 1 UR)

2013: 1 penalty (other)

2014: 8 penalties (1 holding, 2 Off, 1 RP, 4 "other" )

Based on his draft status (penalties aside), Eagles fans realistically should have expected Trent Cole type production from Barnett. It would have been interesting to see how Barnett would have fared in a Jim Johnson (or disciple) style defense that Cole flourished in. But there is no definitive way to evaluate "what ifs." All we have is actual production and Barnett has never advanced past "solid." The criticisms are louder than the accolades. In other words, he needs to create more positive plays fans remember to get them to stop dwelling on the negative.

Good for howie for giving him back some jabs

Florio is a creep.  Always has been.

That’s a fair assessment.  I’ll always view him as a terrible draft pick entirely due to his sheer lack of upside from the moment he was drafted.  They literally had DL coaches explaining that they had to find different ways to work around his complete lack of explosion (both strength and speed) off the LOS.

But he has famously great hand technique and has been able to compensate as a decent NFL player.  Bad return for a 1st…and with the way this defense leans on its edge guys, really not adequate as a starter for us…which is reflected by the fact that he hasn’t spent that much time as a true starter.

It’s fair to say the penalties have been a bit blown out of proportion.  It’s probably less due to discipline problems and more due to the way he needs to jump the snap and play after the whistle to compensate for his lack of athleticism.

He never has been an exciting player and never will be…but on a defense that has its fair share of exciting, disruptive players but is short on depth for true hand-in-the-dirt 4-3 ends, he might actually be a fit this year.

I can’t say I see the Trent Cole comparison though.  Cole was a very aggressive player and he actually had his own (significant) problems with penalties.  I’ll give you that.  But Cole really had some pop.  His 40 may not have showed it, but Cole could explode off the line and beat an OL off the edge or put him on his heels with a bull rush.

Barnett is all about either jumping the snap or swatting down hands so he can find a crease or leverage.

Picks reversed, this board would be saying the same thing.

Well the difference is the DTs surrounding each.  Mazi Smith is on an island by himself and Carter is surrounded by Davis, Williams, Cox etc. in a rotation.

Turns out that would have been a blessing

They’ve only picked #1 four times in their history.  AI was the only one that hit.

I don’t like Florio at all but from the timing of this news coming out and this, I think everyone is definitely hiding something more from the public.

16 regular season, 3.5 postseason

Of course there’s more to it…but the Eagles are the victims in this.  I don’t see why Howie is the one that needs to answer tough questions about it. And I understand that Florio is frustrated and wants answers….but shouldnt Gannon and AZ be the ones with feet to fire over this?

The Cardinals already said they self-reported it to the league.  Gannon and Ossenfort became good friends about a year or two before he got the Cards’ GM job.

I believe Gannon’s version when he said Ossenfort called him to congratulate him on the win over the 49ers, and in the course of that conversation Ossenfort offered Gannon a chance to interview for their head coaching position — which was a violation of league rules.  I don’t think the offer to interview was the purpose of the call, but the conversation ended up there, and that was Ossenfort’s mistake as a new GM

My latest addition , only 5 of them

Niners mocking aside, I think this is a good rule.

That is effectively raising the number of game day actives from 46 to 47 (or 48 to 49 if 8 o-linemen are active)

Random Regular’s day job and just as outlandishly dumb in his posts from that.

Man, he would have been awful at taking depositions.  No wonder he abandoned his lawyer gig.
