I can’t say I see the Trent Cole comparison though.  Cole was a very aggressive player and he actually had his own (significant) problems with penalties.  I’ll give you that.  But Cole really had some pop.  His 40 may not have showed it, but Cole could explode off the line and beat an OL off the edge or put him on his heels with a bull rush.

Barnett is all about either jumping the snap or swatting down hands so he can find a crease or leverage.

It seems you did "see the comparison." For similarities, I was only pointing out how aggressive mentality tends to increase penalties. I was also pointing out that when people reflect on Trent Cole, the first thing they think about isn't penalties, even though he was often among the leaders in that area. Obviously it's because he also was statistically productive. But when you aren't getting around 10 sacks a season, this is what you read:

Florio is a creep.  Always has been.

He’s a virtue signaling tool. Sadly I love PFT.com, except when every other entry is him hawking one of his crappy books.

What it boils down to is the bolded: the cost outweighs the benefit. Barnett is a net negative (or maybe barely breaking even) when looking at his penalties vs his production, and that doesn't take into account the situations he takes those penalties in (3rd and short, 2nd and long, etc).

I don't think it's an unfair take, Barnett has earned the reputation he has and at the end of the day he's a huge disappointment given where he was drafted. Maybe this is the year the light comes on but I'm not gonna hold my breath

That's where I disagree. Production isn't just "sacks." If it was, then I would agree. Barnett had a role on the team. His portion of the rotation largely included run downs. What happened when he wasn't there? In 2021 our defense (under Gannon) allowed 4.0 yards per carry vs the run. Our even better roster (on paper) in 2022 allowed 4.6 yards per carry. Personally, I don't think it's just a coincidence.

Where is he getting 19.5 sacks?

Playoffs maybe

lol.

the run struggles came from the DT position last year.

and Barnett was never that good against the run either. that was the one thing he wasnt actually bad at. His run D is overrated. Confirmation bias by those who loved the pick initially.

Man, he would have been awful at taking depositions.  No wonder he abandoned his lawyer gig.

I don’t see why Howie is the one answering this question instead of people in AZ….but still…it’s not the hardest question to dodge.

If you had to bet everything you had right now, which class is more productive for the Eagles in 2023: their 2023 rookie class or their 2022 rookie class.

The 2023 class is more highly regarded, but the 2022 class obviously has the benefit of being in their 2nd years.

2023. There are more players in the class that can impact the game and there's a real chance that Jurgens loses the starting role to Steen. If that happens, then 2023 in a walk.

Barnett simply shouldn't be on the team anymore.  2023 will be his 7th season with the Eagles; he's had 5 full seasons where his high mark was 6.5 sacks and he's never been anything better than a rotational pass rusher.  Giving him a 3 year/$15M contract when he was coming off a two sack season was .... bewildering.

He's actually a good candidate to be a post June 1 cut, in order to lessen his dead money a bit.

Imagine if the Eagles were to land him.  Position of need + top player at his position + an all-time Eagle legacy.

I don't understand how it at all benefits the Eagles to cut him.  He is only a $3.1M cap hit this year and provides depth at one of the most highly valued positions on this team.  People go way overboard with their Barnett hate.  I highly doubt our run defense would have been as pathetic last year with him.  He's another guy too who can get a high rate of QB pressures while not getting a sack.   The team is better with him as a player they can rotate in and step in if an injury occurs than they are if they cut him.

Hope Eagles work out Araiza but it doesn’t seem like they’re interested.

Found this interesting from Berman’s Mailbag.  Pretty much echoes my thoughts on why the Eagles keep Ward around and why Ward stays.

Who on the current roster is most likely to become a coordinator and then the ‘hot’ head-coaching candidate, like DeMeco Ryans or Jerod Mayo? Pick one from both sides of the ball, excluding Hurts, because as a coach’s son, that’s too easy. —  @JamesPo47417068

So the question is about a current player who can become a good head coach, other than Hurts? Let’s take Kelce out of it, too — he has expressed interest in the media, but I think he could also make a sharp coach. I don’t have an answer like I would have had a decade ago with Ryans, but here’s an interesting player to consider: Greg Ward. He’s a former quarterback who learned how to play wide receiver and has a unique perspective of the game. He’s smart and has natural leadership skills that other players have noted. He’s had exposure to different systems. He’s not a prominent player, but he’s been a starter and a leading receiver, which is important in allowing him to understand players from the top to the bottom of the roster. I’ll find out more if he’s interested in pursuing coaching after football, but he’d be a player who comes to mind.

Jets will see this guy booming 70 yard kicks and then look over to the sideline and see 37 year old Thomas Morstead rubbing icy hot on his leg and have to make the tough call... I'd be surprised if he isn't given a contract before he leaves.

He didn’t dodge the question, he answered it as he saw fit.  Then shut down the lawyer with his own version of "asked and answered”.

Let’s not perpetuate the narrative that Barnett is a stud run stopping DE.  He’s high effort in the run game and doesn’t blow off the responsibility.   So I’ll give him that.  But he’s a 260lb soft physique that will get pushed around by any OT that gets his hands on him, just like most 4-3 edge rushers.

Barnett is about the furthest thing from a run stopping DE.  He has terrible discipline, over commits and can't be counted on to seal an edge.

2022 and it's not even close.  Howie likes to let guys get a chance to redshirt.  Nakobe Dean is gonna have a chance to play this year.  Jordan Davis is supposedly greatly improved.  Cam Jurgens will get the chance to win a starting spot, too.

The 2023 guys will have their day, but I think they'll probably be eased in slowly.

Howie has control of the roster but I don't think he's in control of who is red shirt in practice or who plays on gameday

As I stated above...he's a negative on run downs.  Go back and see how many times he fails to set and edge, over commits or is blown off his spot.

Haven't you heard?  Nothing is Lamar's fault and the Ravens have never given him any talent to work with.  Now that Odell and Aggy are there it's all gonna be smooth sailing.  Apparently Lamar has already said he's gonna throw for 6,000 yards.

I give it until Week 7 before we hear rumblings Lamar and Odell are not getting along.

@RunItBAck What are you confused about?

His other son, Josiah, is at West Virginia as a true freshman MLB.  Unfortunately, he blew a knee out in spring practice and will miss the whole season.

There's a possibility of another Trotter in the future.
