6. The NFL really screwed up letting us get Nolan Smith at 30.

I wasn't overly impressed with Smith in Game 1.  He had a few moments, but very few and you had to be looking for him. Last night, it was impossible to miss him.  Partly, because Ross Tucker was focusing on him and talking him up... but more so because he gave Tucker plenty to talk about.  He seems like the perfect edge for this team.  He's got a high motor, he literally flows everywhere.  He's got no give up in him and he has a desire to be on the field.  Teams miss on guys like him all the time... because he's missing one aspect or another that they are looking for.  In his case, I think his weight deterred a lot of teams from grabbing him early.  (And to another level, being surrounded by so much other talent could also work against him as well as teams think that he was a stat amasser due to the ball going away from others.).  But, he's 22 years old.  He's likely to add at least 10 more lbs, probably closer to 15-20... and won't sacrifice his speed with it.  So, now he's playing stand-up edge rusher at 250+.  Right where you want him.   And he's going to gain some more strength too, which will also help him.  But... the key is that the motor won't go anywhere.  And he seems to 'get it', whereas Barnett never did.  Barnett is a decent high energy guy, but with no brains.  Smith seems every bit to be a smart player and understands situations.   I look forward to him growing into a role this year behind Reddick.

Special teams is going to be an even bigger disaster this year

10. Justin Evans, get off my team.

I'm generally curious what you've seen here. To me, he looks like someone who'll hit. I've actually been kinda pleasantly surprised by him. (Watching at the stadium is a completely different experience because you're not hearing the narrative that the announcers are presenting and you don't see replays the truck feeds them.)

I feel terrible for him.  I am guessing that it's unlikely he plays again for the Eagles.

I'd sign Peters. He was actually decent with Dallas last season. Can play OT or OG.

That has been my reaction as well.

He's still under contract next year.

I'd read that Hurts is going to try to run less, throw more and be less likely to end up injured at the end of the regular season. I agree that McKee probably isn't ready to be QB2 this year. Perhaps the Eagles will keep McKee as the #3 and get him ready to replace Mariota next year. It's nice to have a rookie backup QB that looks like he belongs on an NFL field.

I wonder if the Eagles like Mariota coming off the bench if Hurts is hurt mid-game, but would use McKee if Hurts is out the next game?

WIP wants to bring in Cam Newton.......

I watched enough Saints games last year to know that Justin Evans can't be a NB.

Well, I wanted a #10. But whatever that clown show was on the TD -- make the damn tackle dude.

Mariota has been bad so far.  Maybe it's time to consider he-who-should-not-be-named?

I wonder if we could trade maybe a 4th or 5th for Trey Lance?

Between not having a punter, Bradley going down, and now McPhearson it’s a concern.

A real challenge for the tankers right out of the gate.

Over / under on the number of games Howell plays before Brisett plays?  I've got 4 games (Cards, @ Broncos, Bills, @ Eagles ).  Denver is a tough place to play.  Cards are terrible, but their defense may be decent.  They might make things hard for Howell.

Thoughts about last night:

Not gonna quote it, but that's a good list.  McKee has outplayed Mariota for sure, but he's 3rd string at best just because he's so young and this team has super bowl aspirations.  I wouldn't put it past Howie to cut Mariota.  That cap hit would hurt, but it's spread of 5 years.

Mariota is fine. We'll give him a standing ovation next week and it will all work itself out.

Thoughts about last night:

1. Mariota was just brutal again. There's basically no chance of us cutting him and taking a $5 million cap charge, but he really needs to start showing more. The passes sailing is just lazy footwork and fundamentals. Maybe he looks better with the 1s, but I pray we never find out.

2. Tanner McKee is making the 53; there's no way you can cut him and expose him to waivers. It's a lazy comparison, but I see some Foles in him. Tall, marginally athletic, decent arm, and willing to push the ball down the field and give guys a chance. Hopefully he's ready to be the backup next year.

3. Josh Sills -- what the hell was that? The whole 2nd team OL struggled, but Sills was just brutal. I'll never doubt Stoutland, but I wouldn't keep Sills on the 53 based on what we have seen. Maybe all the time away is the culprit, but I'd trust Opeta in a game way more than Sills at this point.

4. I really wish Trey Sermon had a spot on the roster, even with the fumble (great play by the defender punching it out). I don't get why Boston Scott is a made man, but he seems to have a roster spot locked up. Hope Sermon makes it to the PS. -

5. With the injuries piling up at WR, Ngata has a real chance to make the 53. Watkins, Zaccheus and Covey are all small, and having one big receiver as a backup makes sense. With the injuries, chances are high we keep 6 WR coming out of the gate, and Ngata had done a great job catching the ball even in tight coverage.

6. The NFL really screwed up letting us get Nolan Smith at 30.

7. Feel terrible for Ojomo, as I thought he was looking very strong and would make the 53. If he goes to IR, it sucks that he could lose the season. Marlon is on the team for sure.

8. Dean and Ellis are on the 53, and the other 3 are fighting for spots. Cunningham played well, and he has always been a great run stuffer. Dean + Cunningham on run downs and Ellis on passing downs makes a lot of sense.

9. Our young CBs are sticky, have tight coverage, but they really need to work on their ball skills. Ringo haD great position and just never saw the ball (he should have picked it). Ricks got beat by a good back shoulder throw for the TD. With McPhearson out, either Ricks or Goodrich can be the 6th CB. Goodrich is more of a slot guy, but if they have been working Bradberry there, I think Ricks has more upside.

10. Justin Evans, get off my team.

  1. Pre-season is just pre-season but if he comes in a game, I hope it's because we are ahead and not passing the ball.
  2. MVkee! - Foles may be a good comparison but he has a livelier arm. My criticism is that he took sacks that he maybe could have gotten the ball out quicker.  He didn't, though, make any bad throws.
  3. Stills went from decent in game one to just awful in game 2.  Opeta looked ok.  I see no reason to give Sills a roster spot.  He's a practice squad candidate.
  4. Sermon may make the roster if they go with 8 OL.  Boston Scott is a reliable back. He can catch the ball. He will take what is given and has some ability to make big runs. He does well picking up blitzes.  I would rather they keep Penny over Sermon but Sermon bounced back well after the fumble and just seemed to move with more purpose.  I am not sure what role he would have as a number 5 RB.
  5. Ngata would be good and seems like he has more upside than Covey. I am not sure 6 WRs makes sense unless 2 of them can contribute on STs.
  6. I just hope he stays healthy.
  7. Kentavious Street should make the team.  I liked Ojomo but honestly if he goes to IR, I think it may be best for him.  Street has played well in the pre-season.  I think he gives solid depth.
  8. Morrow looked good and I think he may make the team ahead of Jack.  Jack didn't do much.
  9. Ricks and Ringo have played well.  Ricks was at fault for the TD (at least partially) but he plays smart and recovered well when he lost his footing against Watkins.
  10. Justin Evans isn't terrible all of the time.  He made a terrible play on the ball which led to one TD.  He also seemed unable to understand that tackling requires wrapping up and not just hitting the ball carrier.

To be fair, it's not a terrible idea because Newton was the 2nd swaggiest QB in the NFL in 2021.

I am not so sure. Sydney Brown instead of McPhearson, Nolan Smith instead of Bradley. Hard to see a downgrade.

When have bad special teams ever hurt this team.

I would still take Mariota over Wentz  any QB that ever played at North Dakota State.
