You’re not gonna see Foles or Wentz here.  This is a new era and bringing in either one creates an unnecessary dynamic, for different reasons.

McKee isn’t going anywhere.  The Eagles will carry him on the 53 or do what they have to to retain him.  When you consider that his football development was delayed due to his Mormon missionary work in Brazil for 2 years, not to mention beating cancer — he’s a strong QB prospect.  He talks like a 30 year-old in interviews; a very impressive young man, even beyond football.

Mariota isn’t the 2nd best QB on the roster right now, but the decision to keep him the #2 QB might have as much to do with developing McKee at the proper pace than anything else.

How many penalties did Steen get called for last night?  I thought I heard at least three, two of which were pre-snap.

Had no idea McKee was LDS.

Good thing Reid isn't the coach anymore Or Eagles fans would automatically hate McKee

It does.  If you don't cut him, you have the privilege of paying that same money spread over two years... and maybe having him cost you a game (or more).   Risk reward calculation.  Cost is the same either way, just a matter of how you want to distribute the wasted money.

We signing a Punter or what

What we need is Tom Tupa!  Two birds, one roster spot!!!

OK, so here's my thinking:

1. I don't love going with 8 OL, but I think Sills and Andrews make the PS. It is necessitated by the need to go heavier at WR, DT, and CB.

2. Ngata should make this team, especially with the hamstring issues at WR and now Zacchues being banged up

3. I'm putting Ojomo on the team because I don't think he clears waivers. Guy picked up football late (born in Nigeria), has shown a lot in preseason. I think someone claims him given the upside if we try to get him to the PS. Street could/should make it to the PS.

4. Ricks makes it because, again, I see someone claiming him. The talent is clear.

5. Yes, I did this in Excel. Market is boring as hell right now.

Can he play QB?

I'd bring back peters the the right price In a minute, he'd instantly  be the best back up O lineman on the team.

Mariota was bad tonight. I'm still not all that concerned. That was not the offense we would see in a real game --- not just the players, but the play-calling. I doubt all our practices consist of preparing to win preseason games with vanilla plays. In a real game, surrounded by the talent we have that didn't play today, I have no doubt Mariota would settle down much sooner after a slow start.

There's not really anything I can say to make the fans disgusted with his play feel better. Only better play from him can accomplish that. They can always watch tape of Ian Book turning a 5 yard sack into a 23 yard sack, but I'm not sure that will help a whole lot.

IMO, McKee has taken advantage of his opportunities and earned a roster spot. Therefor, I'd like to see Mariota start preseason game 3 and play a half (again) and then obviously Book would get his last shot.

One think I'd like would be to have Tyree Jackson with Mariota and Calceterra with McKee or Book or whoever.  I think that Mariota to Jackson would work because many of the Mariota problems are "Mariota is throwing too high".  Jackson is 6'7,  high would work.

Prediction: Howie makes a trade this weekend. Someone gets jettisoned for a late round pick. Wallace maybe. But someone. Having our game a day earlier than everyone else gives our players a better chance to be observed.

Also I find this hand wringing over Mariota to be a bit much. We all knew he wasn’t a top tier player. He’s a backup for a reason. I still think he’ll be serviceable if he’s actually needed.

I remember being really excited with Nick Foles in his first preseason. You could just tell he was more than just a guy who had been drafted. He actually looked like someone who could eventually play for real. McKee gives me a similar vibe. But who really know? After all, I was pretty high on JJAW when he had that big preseason game.

Got home about twenty minutes ago. Muggy night. Not gonna say much.

Guys who impressed me: Tanner McKee, Zach Cunningham, Christian Elliss, Marlon Tuipulotu.

At least Zentner looks like he can kick off okay. He doesn't particularly punt very well though.

Can't believe anyone would think VanSumeren is good.

No idea what happened with the injured guys. I'm assuming McPhearson's injury was a bad one but I dunno.

The fact that Wallace was running around with the scrubs in the fourth quarter kinda hints to me that the idea that he's really come on this year and is a potential big contributor is nonsense. But I think we already knew that.

Unfortunately I'm going to be up late.

2 special teams tackles for VanSumeren.   Blocked a pass.  Got pressure on the QB on blitzes.  5 tackles total.  11 tackles over 2 games.

Edmunds and Evans were in for the fourth quarter too.  Basically of the Ss, Blakenship and Brown weren’t out in the 4th.  I think those are the starting Ss.

VanSumeren had the green dot most of the fourth quarter.  Thought he played a bit faster tonight. At least he makes tackles. Morrow must have had ant least four missed tackles in the game. Every ILB not Dean was in for snaps in the fourth.  Doesn’t mean I want VanSumeren on the 53, just an observation. Right now, if I were to guess, the starting ILBs are Dean and Cunningham.

the Eagles have a lot of LBs who don't play defense but play special teams.

Last year,  Dean, Elliss, Kyron Johnson and Shaun Bradley who played a lot of special teams and almost no defense.   Shaun Bradley is hurt and Dean will be a starter, so he won't be doing as much special teams.  Assuming Elliss isn't the starter,  Elliss should be doing a lot of special teams.  Does Kyron make the team?  And 2 other LBs who will be doing a lot of special teams.    VanSumeren could be one of them.  Let's say Cunningham is the other ILB starter.   Do the Eagles want Morrow or Jack doing special teams and not defense?

As of July 6, it looks like the Eagles have almost $14 million in 2023 cap space. I think having a competent backup is more important than the $5 million. Having all $14 million would be great to either use up on extensions or to roll over to 2024 but MM looks like hot garbage. I don't want him on the team.

What have either Ricks or Garner shown that have you ranking either ahead of any of the two you cut?  Nonsense.  Garner’s lack of speed shows.  Ricks had four passes defensed against scrubs.  But did you see his play away from the ball?  Not much better than Williams.  Was it his play at Alabama that made a believer out of you?  Was it Garner’s at Louisiana?  Just curious.  Size doesn’t create a S anymore than it creates a nickel (blame the draft prognosticators for both).  What of Ringo’s instincts have you projecting him as a S?

Has nothing to do with the draft, mostly just trying to keep them on the roster however possible haha.

McPherson was being picked on by backups all day until his injury, and Scott has shown to be very weak when he’s had his opportunities. I’d rather keep the younger guys that have shown flashes in their limited time and had success at the college level.

I actually like Ei Ricks tape more at LSU than Bama. The end of his Bama season he started to get back into it. His ball skills and length are undeniable. He’s a work in progress, but I think he has more room to grow than the aforementioned.

Garner is has great size, physicality, able to compete at corner or on special teams, can support in the run game.

Ringo before last season was a certified 1st round pick, values and performance might fluctuate, but tapping into potential seems like the best thing we can do for this unit. Having those 3+ Jobe learning under Slay/James B would be ideal to me.

That’s just my opinion. I’ve never been wowed by Scott or McPhereson, and with Zech’a injury, I don’t think he’ll be back this season at all. Leaving Scott to be the last man out. With Garner likely going to PS.

The playbook doesn't mean a thing regarding how accurately he throws the ball.   Was the playbook expanded for McKee?  No.  And yet, McKee was able to throw accurately throughout the second half.

Mariota is better than Minshew?   Not so sure about that.  Mariota is better than Hurts?  (Hurts was the backup in 2020.).   Mariota could also just be cooked, but will stick around as long as a team is willing to pay him big money to stand around.

Mariota was good the first 8 games of last year.

1) started 4-4 with the Falcons
2) scored at least 23 points  6 of the first 8 games.
3) beat the niners with Garappolo 28-14.

McKee has about a 50% completion percent with and against 3rd and 4th stringers.

This is crazy, seemed like a good dude. And maybe he still is and just had a bad moment. Interested to see what comes of this.

Worked great with 6'6'' Kyle Pitts and and 6'4'' Drake London.

zech has been burned in preaseason since he's gotten here and the same last night before the injury.

so who is avail at QB?  If we go into the season with MM as the backup, he will cost us any game he has to start because of a Hurts injury....

what is the likelyhood Jalen Hurts stays healthy for 17 games............with his style of play?

Like McKee- but he isn't ready to be a backup QB yet on a SB contending team. (even though he is right now better than MM)

Cam Newton

but Mariota is good, if the passing is sub par,  crank the running to 10.

He beat the Niners last year with the Falcons.  Starters and everything,  regular season game.  Just last year.

There is nothing fine about MM. he is washed garbage. McKee would give you a better shot to win. We can win without the qb runs

No, actually McKee would get crushed, and Mariota started 4-4 last year with a worse team than the Eagles.  Minshew went 0-2 while Hurts went 14-1.

I mean I hear you but I wouldn’t call it hand wringing. I’d just rather see a developmental guy than a qb you know will not provide good play. My attitude with any backup is if you need them for:

1-2 games to secure home fielD or division- you need a developmental guy who can play.

3-4 games- same but I’d like more experience

5+ games-  in todays nfl you’re probably not going to be successful so give me the gunslinger like BDN who can surprise.

I just don’t see Mariota in any of those roles. I think if it were me I’d cut him loose.

Yeah I cant see MM being a viable option Tyler McKee out played him in both the preseason games. I am assuming this is also showing up on the practice field.

What happens if we need MM for a few games, do we just run the ball 46 times a game?

the falcons beat the niners pretty handily last year.  Mariota had a passer rating over 140 that game,  2 TD passes ,  and the falcons ran 40 times and threw 14 times.  Those are the numbers that worked for Mariota last year.

I wonder if the Eagles like Mariota coming off the bench if Hurts is hurt mid-game, but would use McKee if Hurts is out the next game?

I'm sure it would depend. With the new QB rules, I'm not sure if they can dress 3 QB or not, I suspect they can. Even if Mariota looks as bad in a real game as he looked last night they'd probably still let him finish the game. If Hurts sustained a long term injury and Mariota looked like he looked last night, do they play McKee or get somebody off the scrap pile? Getting somebody off the scrap pile means a major revision to the playbook. I'm sure that scenario is one Sirianni and Howie would prefer not to contemplate.
