Their is nothing that Mariota has shown that indicates we would be fine with him.  I don't even think we'd be fine with him in a blowout upcoming in for garbage time unless they are running every down.  His passes are so inaccurate on a consistent basis that it's a major interception risk.

That was the first preseason game I recall where the 2nd half was more entertaining. I feel we will run an RPO offense if Mariota has to play any meaningful snaps. His accuracy was pretty bad last night, but he did try to stay in the pocket more than last week. Mariota would probably be a better choice at coming into the middle of a game if Hurts gets injured, but think McKee could do better with a week of preparation to start a game if Hurts is out for an extended period of time.

Ojomo was looking good until the injury, hope all is good for him and he doesn't miss extended time.

Thought I saw Ojomo playing nose in the 2nd quarter a little bit.

I said it last week, but McPhearson would be a good candidate for the IR to try to stash one of the other CBs on the roster. Speaking of IR, doesn't the player need to be on the 53 man roster before they can be put on IR?

OL didn't play all that well, but its also good to see the backups get extended playing time.

How did Nolan Smith fall all the way to 30?!?! Looks like he will develop it to quite a nice pass rusher.

Liked what I saw from the LBs, but think they are very thin there and an injury to Dean or Elliss would be pretty bad.

Blankenship is obviously a starter, but has Brown shown enough to start over Edmunds/Wallace? Why was Wallace in there in the 4th? Too many injuries?

Speaking of Sydney Brown, while he had a quieter game, I think that was mostly because of better LB play. You really don't want your safety to be a leading tackler as it shows RB's getting beyond the 2nd level frequently.

I like how they are trying literally anybody and everybody at PR/KR. While I don't think the PR needs to be a better returner than Covey, I would like for them to actually be able to contribute at other positions. Thought Cain looked good as a returner, but he can't catch. It doesn't look good though. Maybe Ward has the best shot at taking over for Covey, but he lets the ball bounce too frequently.

McKee had, what, 4-5 dropped passes that hit the hands? Kid looked confident out there. Think we will get a heavy dose of him next week and then Book will close out the 4th quarter.

Trey Sermon, man. Hes good PS material, but wouldn't hold a spot for him on the 53 like they did last year.

Covey can contribute at other positions.

Now you know.

2 special teams tackles for VanSumeren.   Blocked a pass.  Got pressure on the QB on blitzes.  5 tackles total.  11 tackles over 2 games.

I think you are gunning for VanSumeren to be this year's Nasty Nate winner.

2. ELI RICKS, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

Ricks, the 124th player on PFF's big board, went undrafted and signed with the Eagles almost immediately after the draft. In his first preseason game, he was targeted five times but allowed just two receptions for 21 yards. Ricks forced an incompletion and read an out route like a book, resulting in a pick-six. It’s easy to see what made him a top recruit coming out of high school, and with more reps in the upcoming weeks, he has a great shot make the Eagles' 53-man roster.

PFF preseason favorites.

Regarding your 5. Does keeping Jackson as the "big receiver” make any sense?

yes.  many of the "big receivers" didn't do so well,  Jackson did.

For anyone that's interested and hasn't already seen it, here's the full interview video of Nick Foles:

I'm hyping,  but McKee is getting the hugest hype.

5. Yes, I did this in Excel. Market is boring as hell right now.

Too much time on your hands.  You're not about to become a poor, are you?

Worked great with 6'6'' Kyle Pitts and and 6'4'' Drake London.

There is just flawless logic flowing through that one.  Nothing but great idea after great idea.

the falcons beat the niners pretty handily last year.  Mariota had a passer rating over 140 that game,  2 TD passes ,  and the falcons ran 40 times and threw 14 times.  Those are the numbers that worked for Mariota last year.

So, what you are saying is... ask him to do as little as possible... and everything will be fine.   Sounds like he could do that from the sideline and the team might benefit even more.

Prediction: Howie makes a trade this weekend. Someone gets jettisoned for a late round pick. Wallace maybe. But someone. Having our game a day earlier than everyone else gives our players a better chance to be observed.

Also I find this hand wringing over Mariota to be a bit much. We all knew he wasn’t a top tier player. He’s a backup for a reason. I still think he’ll be serviceable if he’s actually needed.

I remember being really excited with Nick Foles in his first preseason. You could just tell he was more than just a guy who had been drafted. He actually looked like someone who could eventually play for real. McKee gives me a similar vibe. But who really know? After all, I was pretty high on JJAW when he had that big preseason game.

I was just thinking a similar thing.  Howie like his trades about at this point of pre-season, and with the game tape out there, there could at least be swap of players going on.  I wonder if someone like Josiah Scott could be traded somewhere

Mariota continues to struggle that could be an issue as the 2nd QB.  McKee has played well in pre-season, but is he ready for real NFL games if called on?  Book does not seem to be the answer either.  What other vet QB is available to come in at this stage as #2 QB?  Foles has been mentioned and he could be a reasonable choice.  But then the team has to carry Mariota's salary if he is cut.  We shall see how the FO handle this situation, go bold or safe?

I imagine it would depend on how Mariota looks coming off the bench.

Eagles could just pull a 49ers and talk about … bringing on Philip rivers lol

Hurts is wearing #8 now? When did that happen? Maybe Dallas Sports Fan can fill us in on that development.

He's already a QB that had to learn TE. And really hasn't shown much. Not sure I want to have him out wide now. Ngata has shown a lot more and is a WR.

Tyree Jackson has shown a lot more than Ngata.

Jackson would be a TE,  but the "big receiver" role would be filled by a TE,  Tyree Jackson.

     rec yards tar
Ngata 4  43  8  -  5.375 yards per target

Ngata hasn't done well.  Also penalties.

Tyree Jackson, on only 3 targets, has the longest play on offense this preseason.  35 yard catch.

The Eagles know Mariota is better.   If, somehow, he isn't good, that's a different story.

The Eagles are a really good team,  but there are some real flaws with the 2nd and 3rd string.   You're seeing some of that with everybody.

Mariota has been bad so far.  Maybe it's time to consider he-who-should-not-be-named?

I wonder if we could trade maybe a 4th or 5th for Trey Lance?

if you're looking to stockpile players like that,  he's a player like that.   the Niners won't want to do that right now, and there's no need.

I would still take Mariota over Wentz  any QB that ever played at North Dakota State.

Maybe this is the year tht Easton Stick plays for the Chargers.

Mariota isn’t the 2nd best QB on the roster right now,

Tyree Jackson?  Greg Ward Jr?  Britain Covey?

The decision to keep Mariota at #2 above McKee will 100% have to do with the contrqct he was given by Roseman.

Also, the fact that McKee has only played in preseason games with and against 3rd stringers,  and hasn't been all that impressive.  He made some good plays yesterday, and Mariota made some bad ones.

But some, like the Eagles, have memories extending back years, and those years include Mariota as a mid NFL QB.    Haven't seen any of that mid NFL QB from McKee.  Seen only preseason 3rd string.   But he did beat out Ian Book.

McKee is making perfect back shoulder throws to receivers who can’t catch
