More guessing than rationalizing. If his role here is to run/chase and wreck the run game as a Will, that fits his game.

Can you fill me in on this a bit?   How old was he and how old was she at the time it was supposed to have happened?

This is a good question. If it was consensual, some states have 'Romeo & Juliet' laws where one party is under age and the other is over but not by too much (5 years or so I think) it's not considered statutory rape.

I'm not sure what people think they saw last year. For the first few weeks, I wasn't impressed with Covey. But there was a point where things seemed to click he showed improvement each week. It's weird that some people don't want to see if that continues. I guess there's always Greg Ward (for them) and watching him not even fair catch easy punts and allowing them to bounce and roll for additional net yards.

Greg Ward does a solid enough job at Punt return.  The combine and pro day numbers show Covey running a 4.50 to Ward's 4.59.  At 10 split,  Covey over Ward 1.54 to 1.56.  Covey tops shuttle - 4.09  v 4.31.  Covey tops 3 cone 6.73 v 6.90

Those fair weather Phillies fans are so quiet. Oh wait, that's not their home ballpark.

Who gives a flying Fkkk about the Phillies in this thread???!!

Get that crap outta here.

I was hoping their LB depth and Overshown's potential would make Jabril Cox available.

I was only a kid at the time, but I was a big Harold Jackson fan.  I kinda sorta remember arguing with my sister (bizarre because none of my sisters followed sports and were only aware of the Eagles because my father would sometimes drag them to games with us) who was better, Jackson or Hawkins. I preferred Jackson. She preferred Hawkins. They were both good but I think hindsight would agree with me.

I believe Jackson was dealt to the Rams in the hilariously one sided deal for a virtually washed up Roman Gabriel. It’s a shame that most Eagles fans today don’t have the disdain for Mike McCormack that he deserved. They were bad when he took over, but he wrecked the future of the franchise. I guess Pete Retzlaff might have had his share of involvement too. Damn, the seventies sucked. From the time I started following football in the third grade until the time I graduated high school, the Eagles never had a winning record. Thankfully college was a lot better.

Hopefully 2017 made up for all that nonsense...😊

People want a player with the potential to take it to the house. While Covey is great at fielding and getting a decent return, I don’t think he has much potential to break one big.

For the record, I don’t mind Covey as the PR, but I don’t like that that’s the only thing he can contribute to the team.

Covey is a Wide Receiver.  Perhaps the most quick and agile one the Eagles have.  A slot receiver with the measurables of a Wide Receiver.  In college, he led Utah in catches 3 years.
S
Just looked at all the WRs who are likely making the team and bubble,  and Covey is the quickest,  most agile, best 3 cone and best shuttle.   Not even close really.  Except that Smith's numbers are a mystery because no combine or pro day.  Covey has the best of the known numbers for quick and agile of the WRs.  I'll look at RB.   Boston Scott is the closest to Covey.   Scott is ahead in 3 cone 6.67 to 6.73,  Covey is ahead in shuttle 4.09 to 4.15. Covey up 10 split 1.54 to 1.58.   Scott's overall ras was higher.

Some guys go through down periods with nagging injuries.  That is wishful thinking for sure but not impossible for a guy like Cunningham to regain form.  Jack always had a limited shelf life with his knee and it expired

You obviously haven't seen ward return punts

He lets far too many bounce over his head for more yards for the defense because he either misjudges the ball or is scared to fair catch field it.

Not to mention the amount of times he double clutched almost muffed or muffed a punt.

Even when he did cleanly catch one he didn't do much with it

Combine numbers aren't the end all and be all, most NFL scouts GMs understand this and use the testing numbers to either confirm or deny what they think they see on tape.

If a guy looks fast on the field then runs a 4.3 then there might be so mething to it, if he runs a 4.7 maybe he plays faster than he times or maybe the person scouting is on crack

Same goes if a guy looks slow on tape but runs really fast one checks him out some more

One can look at wards raw testing numbers and say he might be able to return punts, so you put him on the field and it's clear to everyone that he's not very good at it despite his testing numbers.

Testing numbers are part of the picture not the picture.

Ward already showed he shouldn't be in the picture to be the starting PR.

Me personally, I take Penny every day of the week and it isn't close. Sermon had 2 carries for 14 yards last year and couldn't beat out gainwell or Scott to get carries. If he's healthy and still can't get touches then what's the point? Rather have a guy who will contribute when healthy, even if that's only 8 games out of the year

I think in a rotation Penny will be healthier, maybe 12-15 touches a game with max 10 of them being rushes. He also said he lowered his playing weight so maybe that helps also.

Either way I'm taking Penny over Sermon by a long shot, you can always find a cheap running back on the street to give what Sermon gives

It's kinda cool and fun to have so many of the 2019 Sooners on the Eagles, but for the most part, they're practice squad level.  Hurts is great, and it's good to have players who are more valuable with you than elsewhere on the practice squad, because they have years of some chemistry with Jalen.

Here is an excerpt from a really good article on the impact of a punter:

https://www.fieldgulls.com/platform/amp/2018/5/7/17327282/punt-wins-above-average

In a sport with only 17 regular season games and at most 4 playoff games, 1 extra win is significant.

We don't punt nearly enough to get close to that level of WAR.

Talk about the fightins here

He was a really good player at one point. Maybe he’s closer to his old self than the scrap heap.

Some have suggested that Cunningham is best at run stopping and that someone else might do the coverage.  Some sort of platoon.

If by a solid enough job, you mean that Ward frequently fails for field punts which then roll away for additional yardage, while simultaneously never making anyone miss, while failing to average an average amount of return yardage, and while never breaking long ones, then by all means you’re right. He’s solid.

Other viewers might think the only thing Ward is good at is rarely fumbling. But what the hell do they know anyway? He was a former quarterback who could be utilized in a wide variety of cool ways on offense, so he must be good.

While Ward is secure when he does field punts, I feel he leaves a lot of yards out there all the time. So many of the punts that he'll let go, could have been fair caught.

Covey has a different mindset out there:

https://www.delawareonline.com/story/sports/nfl/eagles/2022/09/17/eagles-britain-covey-catches-punts-vai-sikahema-darren-sproles-vikings-jalen-reagor-running-into-him/69492782007/

But there's more to it than that. Covey said he hates players who call for fair catches rather than attempt even a short return that can hurt their return average. He likens it to an NBA player refusing to heave the ball toward the basket at the end of a quarter because that would negatively affect their field-goal percentage.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Britain Covey (41) runs with the ball during an NFL football game against the Miami Dolphins, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022, in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Covey, for example, passed up a fair catch for a 2-yard return, saying, "You can fall forward for 2 yards. It's better than nothing."

In all, Covey returned two kicks for 13 yards, an average of 6.5 yards per return.

"Nothing bugs me more," Covey said about the basketball player who won't take that length-of-the-court heave. "That’s one of my pet peeves in all of sports. It’ll affect his field goal percentage. That is selfish."
