DE where we only carry 3

There is one DE playing at any given time.   Last year Sweat and Graham roughly played half a game each.  Barnett played a few snaps but the one DE spot was 50/50 split.

Normally, it was a 4 man front,  2 DTs, 1 DE, 1 OLB -  in each case there's a first string, second string, third string.  OLB this year is Reddick, Nolan Smith, Patrick Johnson.  Do we want to give many snaps to Nolan Smith at OLB instead of Reddick?  Maybe Nolan Smith can replace Cunningham?  If Nolan Smith is great at ILB next to Dean,  which is plausible given his excellent combine numbers,  all the problems are solved, for now.

If you cut him when he is injured, he reverts to IR and is lost for the year unless you do a settlement. I think that means you can't bring him back.

My guess is he is ready for week 1.

Other way around, you CAN bring them back, once the settlement expires.

So sad we barely knew him...or did we🤔

Why not just line him up at WR. He runs a 4.4.

He can take Hurts place.... can you imagine 4.4 QB with his running skills?

Ah...did not know that. Thank you. So the settlement is for a set amount of time?

You are right... and that's where the tricky part comes in for a coach and why there are so few truly great QB gurus.  Chris Palmer was talked about as being one.  Nope.  There was talk about Adam Gase, because he was linked to Peyton Manning... but late career Manning.   And he's proven to be a fraud too.   The guys like Bill Walsh, Mike Holmgren and Andy Reid come along very rarely.  And they walk that fine line between playing too soon and getting them experience like very few ever have.  AND they can communicate with those QBs and help them to understand that the slower approach is actually in their best interest.

I hear the need to draft the guy because of the opportunity coming so infrequently, but at the same time, I disagree with their method of developing him.  Throwing a guy with so little experience into the deep end of the pool could have disastrous consequences on his development.

Ironically, it was considered to be a weak QB class, yet had 3 QBs drafted in the top 4, but I agree its not a strong group.  I don't see a lot of success coming for this crop.

The top 3 all have potential, but none are the type of guy you expect immediate success from.

I think generally that when in doubt, sitting a rookie QB makes sense. Richardson is a tough case because he’s more raw and less experienced than most. Probably the best path is to wait until you’re out of playoff contention. But he’s so talented that you can probably make it work from week 1 if you want. It’s just going to be a very run heavy offense.

As long as the OL holds up OK, the extra experience could pay big dividends. That would be my concern — getting the kid killed behind a bad OL. He’ll develop bad habits, his body will take punishment like Couch did in Cleveland, and you shake his confidence.

4.4?   I bet he can't even see over the line.

Stares down his receiver a bit too much but that is curable and really not that unusual for a rookie QB given the speed of the NFL.

All young QBs do that.  I was impressed by his willingness to remain in the pocket and keep firing against the Colts' starters while playing with guys who will by and large be unemployed in a week.

Or Carr in Houston.

Depends on the injury. It's basically an agreement between all the parties that the injury will take X amount of weeks to heal so he get's paid for however long they all agree to. There's some bylaw where if its the original team that settled, it's two weeks after the settlement expires to sign him back to the 53 or the practice squad. I'm guessing it's to try to somewhat close the loop on teams doing it too much. But the Eagles did it with Greg Ward last year, and a few other times I believe.

If he just sits on IR the whole time without a settlement, he can't be brought back.

In Coveys case, I think it's more likely he makes the 53 and then goes to IR vs this other scenario though.

Thought I read somewhere that they had Bradberry getting nickel reps in TC. This to me would suggest that we can stash Scott/Goodrich on PS and call up when needed. Bradberry can fill in that game if Maddox goes down and Jobe can play outside. No?

About the only positive I got out of watching that game was that McKee has good pocket presence. Considering that he was working from an imperfect pocket on almost every throw, he hung in and kept his eyes downfield. Yes, he missed some throws. Kind of reminded me of his time at Stanford, where his pass pro was terrible.

I know you are down on Fred Johnson, but he looked okay to me, especially going against likely starters. He would be my backup LT right now ahead of Steen and Driscoll.

I like how he steps up in the pocket to avoid pressure.

I think this is the most likely scenario if and when Maddox gets hurt.

It's more that they currently don't have a good #2 safety. If the front 4 dominates, it won't matter...but that won't be the case every week.

I think they’re fine without a "good” second safety. They need a functional one while Brown develops. I think they have functional ones in Evans and Edmunds with the hope Brown takes the job at some point.

I expect they do it with Ward again this year.

Agreed doesn't seem like trading for a safety makes sense with Brown in wings.  LB is a different story

Jalen Reagor is expected to be cut.

I think they're comfortable with Dean and Cunningham as starters.  Morrow and Ellis as backups would be no better or worse than the backups around the rest of the league.

He took a few, but I think it might been more for a situational role. Desai has been moving guys around quite a bit. Smith has lined up all over. Edmunds has taken quasi LB reps, etc. I don't think they would want to put Bradberry there for an extended period.

My impression its to see if the can have Bradberry cover a TE (we have Waller, Kittle, and Kelce on our schedule) or follow a guy like Lamb into the slot.
