There’s absolutely no reason that I should be excited about Julio Jones…but I kind of am

I was weirdly excited in 1991 when Roy Green suited up for the Eagles the first time.  He was an Eagles killer for years, and our WRs needed some help.

Then in 1993, they brought in James Lofton, and I was wary.

In 1995, they brought in Art Monk.   And I was bored.

Now... in 2023, they bring in Julio Jones.  I will watch with no expectations.  But, he can't do less than Watkins did recently.

Big difference from previous stints is Tennessee needed him as their #2. TB wanted him as their #3 but had so many injuries he ended up their #2 for most of the year.

He’s our #4 who’s filling in as the #3 while Quez is out. This is Randy Moss on the 2012 9ers. A big catch every couple of games, 400+ yards on the season and the move pays off. Keep expectations modest and it should all come together.

Yeah, that’s the weird thing, I actually believe he’s going to be an effective player here.

Who is clocking my fantastically prescient Phils pick of 6-3.  Julio Jones goes yard. No seriously, Rojas gets 2 hits. About same chance of happening.

The NFL is a novelty for a few games a year, but I'd never support a London franchise.   And many fans would be the same - our team preferences are set.  The NFL season is also at the same time as Football & Rugby - the NFL would be competing for eyes with established sports.

One advantage the NFL has is how few games are played. So the novelty aspect at least has some protection.

But, yes, this would be a massive long term project. I could also see the NFL moving to having games 7 nights a week and scheduling European NFL games around the EPL and Bundesliga.

There is also the Champions League going on too. FIFA are also introducing club tournaments to fill in gaps in the world schedule - plus like now, there is a Rugby World Cup going on. The NFL scheduled games to not compete with that tournament.

You can argue the NFL should have started the process 10 years ago and got their elbows out, scheduling wise.

They did... 30 years ago with NFL Europe.  It failed.   NFL just wants to keep swinging... but an intercontinental league is just not feasible, for a variety of reasons, but the logistics of it just make it impossible.  There is a bias for teams going from the West Coast to the East... and vice versa, and that's only 3 hours of time zones.  Could you imagine the issues for Seattle going to Frankfurt?

The NFL needs to let this nonsense go.   It is folly.

They gave us practice squad and worse level players with the game quality that came with it.  And pre-season games.  Once the novelty wore off, most people stayed at home.

In the era we live in, teams work on sleep in all sports and understand what they need to do with rest and recuperation, and when.  The 8+ hour time difference is a hard one to adjust to, but it's not unsurmountable either.

But as I say, don't see it happening at all.  It's a nice carrot to throw out there by the NFL every once in a while.

Agreed, I am a fan of the Eagles and that will never change for the rest of my life.

30 years ago the internet wasn’t really a thing. Accessibility and marketing are much easier now.

The time difference between the east coast and London is 5 hours and 6 hours for Berlin.

They might need to re-organize the AFC and NFC into "East” and "West” and change scheduling format to allow the east coast teams and west coast teams to play each other, but I think it’s something the NFL would absolutely do to expand internationally.

I also could also see teams in Mexico and Canada. It’ll be a multi decade project, but it’s coming. There’s too much money to be made.

You forgot Irving Fryar.

Canada is a more logical expansion.

But the NFL would need to compromise on stuff like playoff timings and when the Super Bowl is played.  You can't potentially have 2 European teams playing in the Super Bowl and start it at 11pm/midnight in Europe.  It won't work and I don't see US networks compromising too much on their ad revenue.

The Eagles schedule this year is rubbish for international fans.  Other than staying up past midnight a lot, I'll see a few live games this year.  They can't do that  with a team based in London playing in the US.

Irving Fryar had 2 monster years for the Eagles. Can't lump him in with the others.

That wasn't really the point. We aren't comparing flops, we're talking about the excitement and expectations of bringing in an aged, possibly "has-been" former star WR.

I read it the other way. Regarding expectations, yes agreed.

Super Bowls would probably be scheduled something like 3pm EST/8pm London time/noon west coast time.

Brady was scared to get hit behind that OL. Not that Julio is anything great, but he probably was held back in that offense to a certain extent.

How is it that there are no less than 9 games on TV and they are all at commercials at the same time all of the time.

Budda Baker, Justin Simmons and Kevin Byard are all available. They each have one year left (2024) at about 14M. All three of those teams should be sellers.

We actually have some leverage in a trade.

No way is howie paying that much for a safety

Of course.  That's what a developmental league is all about.

They will kill the NFL trying to do all that.  No thank you.

He actually produced here and was brought in at the beginning of the season.  The three I mentioned were midseason adds, same as Julio.

Roy Green - added for Week 4.
James Lofton - added for Week 7.
Art Monk - added for Week 14.

Fryar didn't fit this mold.
