EMB Blog: 2023 Regular Season thru Week 9 - NO POLITICS

If Hoskins comes back on some sort of one year deal like some have said, next season’s 1-9 would look like:

Schwarber - Turner - Harper - Hoskins - Stout - Realmuto - Castellanos - Bohm - Marsh

Solid 1-9, power through 1-9

Wheeler, Suarez, Sanchez should all be back.

Basically need one more ace - level starter.

This team made it to game 7 of the NLCS.  Not a time to even think about breaking up the lineup, considering they already look better going into next season.  Basically need to add an ace + a left handed and right handed bat off the bench, a closer and maybe another 1-2 bullpen arms.  Anything over that would be a bonus.

So the outfield L-R is Castellanos, Marsh, Harper?  I'm not sure Phils will risk Harper's elbow in the outfield. Plus, he is already a better defensive 1st baseman than Hoskins.

Pitching: I'd go hard for Yamamoto, let Nola walk, and see if one of the young arms can be a 5th starter.  Wheeler, Yamamoto, Suarez, Walker and young arm.

I finally have to ask: what’s the significance with that Dancing on My Own song?

Isn't it because they were underdogs last year that no one believed in?

Everyone wants to be the underdog.

What do you think of Josey Jewell?

PFF have him rated higher than byard, peppers, simmons and baker

Sounds like a character from Toy Story

Trea Turner has never been great in the postseason.  He always seems to disappear in the biggest of games.  Phils really needed him to get on base and do some damage last night, but he just couldn't connect.  Why not at least try to bunt and use your speed to get on?

That’s a loser mentality. No surprise being Baltimore.

... they lost 100 games 2 years ago and have been terrible since pretty much the late 90s.  I think you'd be happy to see your team do something, too.

Time to get back to basics on the blog.  What a player names sounds like and the Whiners whining again

Good instinct guy but slow (think he was 4.8 or 4.9 40 time at combine).  Remember him from his days at Iowa when he went up against Saquon in some  Saquon's best performances when he was electric

Well calling him a standout for the Eagles has already brought the seriousness of the tweet down a level. So I doubt he's been amazing.

Maybe try:

tenure

I have a favor to ask of anyone who might have access to the film from Sunday night's game. On the Dolphins kickoff with about thirty seconds left in the first half, the ball sails over Boston Scott's head for a touchback. Can you tell me where it actually landed? If the goal line is 100 and the end line is 110, did it land at 108? 105? Or even behind the end line a couple of yards (112)? I can get a decent line on the hangtime because I can "hear" it land but all I can get for the distance is an estimate. Something more accurate would be appreciated.

I absolutely hate the way the networks show some kickoffs from behind the kicker and then stay with that angle for the entire play.

@BigEFly @just relax

Also, if anyone responds, please tag me on the response. I'm kind of avoiding the Blog for the time being because of the Phillies game last night and the corresponding conversation. I'm in no mood for it right now.

Less than a week away from the trade deadline. Was Byard Howie's only move?

I think Kentavius Street is their best trade chip, maybe for a 7th or ideally they could get a 6th to offset one of the picks used for Byard. They have Thomas Booker on the PS who plays a similar style.

Pretty sure we all want Barnett gone but the Eagles for some reason think he adds value to the team. I don't see him getting moved.

You wonder if a team looks at Boston Scott and offers something for him. He's just not playing here and Devon Allen can be signed to the active roster to be the KR.

Patrick Johnson seems like a forgotten man at Rush LB. He's flashed in the past. He's playing about 75% of ST snaps but he hasn't stood out at all. Are there any pass rush needy teams? The Eagles gave up a 4tth for Genard Avery. Granted, he had 5 sacks before being an Eagle. Could Johnson bring back a 5th/6th?

Marlon T is another candidate to get traded in that DT room

When are we going to activate Albert O ?

Why not?  He's not throwing like a pitcher, so he can come back from Tommy John in 17-18 months and throw from the outfield.  If they are really worried about it, they could put Harper in LF rather than RF, much shorter throws from LF on average than from RF.   He might need to make the odd hard throw from LF corner to 2B, or even LF to Home.  And if that's really a problem, he just needs to be smart about a random game in April - September vs. long term health.  Give up the double, give up the run... its not worth it.  Play LF like Manny, but with much better range to track down the ball in the air.

They also already have a 'young arm' in Sanchez who was pretty good this year.   Not sure they need another 'young arm', especially given the arms in the minors.   Painter will still be a year away now

Well, I'm sold.   Clearly this was a tank move by the Cardinals, he's just too good for them to use and still lose.

Seems like they are more likely to cut him at this point

The only thing I'm going to say about the Phillies (in this post) is their offense is almost wholly dependent on the long ball; if they're not bombing it out of the park, they're not particularly tough to defend.  This is partly why I keep harping on the batting lineup -- you have to be able to manufacture runs on the days you can't live off the HR.  The Phillies offense got shut down when it mattered, and trotting out the identical lineup card every game -- in a 7-game series -- makes it easier for the opponent to strategically navigate against your batting lineup.

Just not a very good job by Thomson.

Yesterday Goodrich was mentioned as being released but don't see a sign of that

I used to think his value was mostly because they don't have much outside of Sweat and Graham, but BG is playing about 25% of the snaps and Barnett isn't too far behind. Don't think it would be difficult to get creative and get some additional snaps for Williams, Carter, Street, or Ojomo on the edge there.

He was hitting over 0.500 going into this series in the postseason.   He wasn't great this series, especially the last two games.   Neither was Schwarber.  Neither was Harper.  Castellanos disappeared the entire series.   Bohm and Stott were brutal the beginning of the series.  Long story short... as a team, they failed.   It wasn't one guy, it was every guy.   They all had their opportunities to get things done, and none of them did when their turn came around.   Harper had two meatballs to hit, with 2 men on in the 7th.  He took one, and the other he got under just enough to make a lazy fly ball to the outfield.   Of course, if Casty had done THAT in the 4th (or was it the 5th), they get another run while they were up 2-1.  And 3-1 is dramatically different in that moment.  Only getting 1 that inning was huge.   Then again, a lot falls on Dombrowski for that inning, because he failed to make the necessary move at the deadline to add a much needed BENCH BAT.  They had NO ONE to turn to for Rojas in that situation with the bases loaded.   They needed to pinch hit for him given how he was hitting in that spot, because it was a chance to break it open... but the options:  Pache, Cave, Sosa or Stubbs are just awful choices.  Rojas was a better hitter than all 3 of them in the regular season.   That was a spot where they needed a 'Matt Stairs' type... and frankly, Hoskins would have been great as an option in that moment.  It was nice that he said he wasn't feeling it for the NLCS and all, but he needed to be active for just such a moment.  Did they really need to have Walker on the roster if he was just going to collect cobwebs?  Make your decision for the 4th starter before the series, don't wait for the 'simulated' game moments before the actual decision needs to be made.    And then Topper needed to actually trust him (and Suarez) more, especially when the bullpen starting showing MASSIVE cracks like in Game 3.

Never.  He's the new Genard Avery.

Stoll is being used as a 6th OL and has 3 targets all year, and Calcaterra has no targets and is getting less than 10% of the snaps. Sure seems like Albert O is the most likely to be cut once the Eagles need to make room.
