Part of the value of Surtain is having him on a rookie deal for 2024 and 2025. We lose that excess value by already paying 2 CBs.

This is true.

But wouldn’t we move on from Slay and/or Bradberry at the same time we have to pay Surtain? So essentially it would be a swap of cap allocation, and we essentially have 3 top veteran CBs for the price of 2 during 2024 and 2025?

Would love Hicks back…never wanted him to go.

Dude is always around the ball.

The challenge we face with our ILBs is NOT being "always around the ball"  Cunningham and Morrow have done an excellent job in that, and the Eagles' 62.9 yards per game surrendered Rushing is in large part due to that proficiency.  What we need from our ILBs that we aren't getting is good pass defense, especially against opposing TEs.

The persistent Surtain talk makes no sense to me.  People trying to play Madden out here.  Throw away the fact that cap wise with the players we need to give contracts to and the cap hits it would take to move on from Slay or Bradberry just doesn't make it reasonable.  You can't move on from Bradberry or Slay midseason for Surtain either. There are locker room dynamics here and those two guys are leaders in the locker room.  Blog is getting goofy right now.

No one said it had to make sense.  Bottom-line it is fun to speculate ... and crunch the numbers that are associated with that speculation.

Interesting Transaction posted today that apparently happened on Wednesday.  Bringing back Elliss may mean that Howie is seeing one of his Roster DTs ... Street or Tuipulotu as a trade chip.

Of interesting note, the previous remarks by Thomas Dimitroff included the line, "we are always reaching out to teams, especially teams looking to increase their draft stock — some of the teams looking for increased first round picks, or don’t have first round picks, are desperately seeking out what might be available. Howie is obviously in a different situation…”

Now, this was a generalized statement, but it was within the context of Roseman trading for Byard. And then he mentions Howie as the counter example. Coincidence? I doubt it.

Ultimately I don’t think we can make a Surtain trade work, but I am quite confident that Howie knows exactly the price it would take to get that deal done. He’s hammered that potential deal out already, even if he chooses to pass.

I agree that we probably can't make the Surtain pick work.

Given the very small number of open roster slots that are available in the 2024 roster, I would not be at all surprised to see Howie looking for teams that want an extra high pick this year and offering them one or both of this year's 2nd Round picks for their 1st Round pick next year.  The same is likely to be the fate for one or more of the 5th Round picks.  It may even portent a trade down from this year's 1st Round pick into a later round plus a future pick to a team looking to pick a player like Lamar Jackson was picked in 2018.  The Ravens gave up two second-round picks, one in 2018, the other in 2019. The two teams also swapped places in the fourth round, with the Eagles going from 132 to 125.

LB trade prediction: Lavonte David. Has a 1.165M base salary. UFA at the end of the season and because he has 11 accrued season, the most the Bucs can get as a comp pick is a 5th round pick. He's 33, so shouldn't be part of any rebuild. He's still arguably a top 5 LB (comfortably top 15). Bucs do have 62M in cap space in 2024, but they're also a team that may want to pay a QB in the off-season (Kirk, Kyler).

I'd be thrilled with him. Another established, well respected and great player to add to the defense.

Florida just ran the stupidest 4th and inches play I've ever seen in my entire life. Not exaggerating.

One interesting nugget, trading Bradberry in 2023 counts as 1.6 in dead money and 1.5 in saved money.

You would also take a boat load of dead money in 2024

If it's a post June 1 cut. Would take another cap hit in 2024.

Had he run straight that's an easy 1st. Not to say that the play call wasn't stupid because the design seemingly was to have him throw to the quarterback, but if it called for him to just run forward he gets that first down and possibly more if he bounces it out right

I didn't see that part

@mattwill

Eagles 26

Washington 18

Bonus: Davis 2 sacks

@mattwill

Eagles 24

Washington 13

Bonus: Howell throws 2 picks and no washington player has more than 55 rushing yards.

Trading 2 1s for Surtain means very limited flexibility to move around for Lane's replacement. Better chance they trade 2 1s to get higher than anyone expects in the draft and go RT.

And then what happens to Lane as he was extended through 2026. Or are you going to stick this rook at RG ?
