Would you disagree with any of his grades? I'd have to split the coaching and give Johnson a C-.

They are third in the league in points scored per game and second in yards per game.  Those look like pretty good test answers.

It's easy to pick at plays that look bad.  But the overall body of work is very good.

Dean led the team in TFLs with 2. The other players with a tfl were ricks (1) and brown (1)

And yet he still managed to get abused all game.

If one just looks at the box score one would assume Dean played really well, I think he had something like 12 total tackles.

Yet how many of those were 5-10 yards down field?

I remember at least two where he had a guy dead to rights short of the first down but got piggy back over the marker

Dean had zero pass deflections, zero pressures, zero splash plays gave up a bunch of catches and was kicked on all day.

I remember one pass play where he shifted his direction about 3 times, he looked like he was glitching, I was like what the eff is he doing,

I remember another pass play where a receiver caught a pass in his zone where Dean was way out of place and the receiver went blazing up field and Dean just kind of gave up and started jogging, like at least keep running who knows maybe the guy gets caught up with another Defender and you can punch it out from behind but nope he was gassed and just watched.

I'm sure when the coaches sit down and look at the tape with the team they'll have a bunch of teaching points for Dean.

I want Dean to Succeed but I just don't see it with him, he's not super fast he's definitely not big and his lack of length really limits him in coverage .

Hopefully he can prove me wrong but so far I don't see it with him

The next 5 games for the 49ers could all be losses. They sure miss Deebo and T. Williams. Who would have thunk that they may miss the playoffs this year?! 😄 I remember posting the 49ers schedule a few weeks ago saying there's some losses coming up.

I’ll disagree. Dean has ability, he’s played only a few games in his career. The other two weren’t on a team a week before the season for a reason. Not quite ready to give up on him yet.

I'm not giving up on him but it would be nice to see something, anything.

Morrow and Cunningham have been playing well.

They both have their warts but both have made plays at times.

Dean not so much.

I'm not giving up on Dean but it's fair to ask if he gives you the best chance of winning right now as a starter.  Would like to see another LB Hicks or Jewell added to mix

Agree on Dean. The beats kept mentioning in training camp that he doesn't stick out or make any defining plays. I'd start thinking about him as just becoming an average linebacker and prepare accordingly. There was a reason he slipped in the draft. I'm not sold on him. Morrow and Cunningham show up on the film making plays since Day 1 and one as a late signing. Behind these defensive tackles he should be thriving and he's familiar with them. Let's hope the injury is his reason for a slow start here. I am looking at minimum for a proven vet right now if I'm Howie.

I think if not this year but next Desai will be a HC and that is 2 2nds as well.

2 Thirds, and you better hope he doesn’t get a job this year because we wouldn’t get anything for it.

Gainwell needs 87 yards on his next two rushing carries to match last season's total.

He has to be vested for 2 seasons with the Eagles?

As you said, I think they should’ve given him a more active role - as in the last WAS match up Morrow got to play like UGA Nakobe with a lot of blitzing (and got 3 sacks if memory serves). In zone he seems like he can cover his shadow only, looking at the QB but having little sense of receivers being handed off to his responsibility.

Yup, Dean is a downhill guy who in college was pretty explosive going forward, ask him to drop in a zone or chase guys all over the field and he'll struggle just like he did in college.

Dean isn't overly athletic and he's on the shorter side as well, TJ Edwards wasn't very athletic or fast at all, but had size 6'3" 240+ to go along with his instincts.

Dean has zero instincts going backwards, it's like once you stick him in reverse his brain freezes, going forward he can get downhill quick and he's built actually helps him with leverage on the LOS but that same build limits him in coverage.

Like I said there's a reason he dropped in the draft, he's a classic ILB who can be really good wreaking havoc at the LOS but get him out away from the LOS in coverage and chasing guys all over and he'll really struggle just like he did in college.

Loved hicks but if he came back he'd get hurt in his first snap and be fine for the season, him and Philly are broken together☹️

Jewell would be great, not sure what it would cost.

Part of me worries that broncos have a renewed sense of hope now that they beat the chiefs and won't be sellers now, plus I cant see Payton doing anything to help the birds whim he hates.

At this point I think morrow and Cunningham give the eagles the best shot at winning.

Not sure what happened to Ellis, he looked so good in camp then got a shot to play and looked as lost as Dean, but he's not a draft pick like Dean so he's not going to get a free pass.

How would you assign a sack if its a collapsing pocket?  Not a rule worth fixing.

The touchback on the endzone fumble is a priority.  Followed by being able to challenge certain personal fouls, like facemask (which is a cut and dry call).

The touchback on the end zone fumble rule dates back to Kenny Stabler deliberately fumbling forward into the end zone to win a game. The rule has good provenance.

She's plugged into the Eagles for sure.

There are just so few linebackers who are a) cheap b) can cover and c) available.

She was on BwF a year ago saying how the AJ Brown trade went down. She made it seem like she’s much more plugged into the Titans

We agree. Seemed like fair grades is what I meant. We may disagree about Johnson, though. I think he's getting by on the talent of Hurts and Brown and not doing a great job.

Hopefully this is not for Suh money because of Carter and Davis

Obviously a pretty small sample size but these reps were pretty impressive by Steen coming in cold.

I'm about twenty pages behind and it's gonna take a little while to catch up. Just wanted to mention a couple of quick points.

* It was unbearable listening to Mark Schlereth yesterday. It was annoyingly obvious that the was rooting for the "Redskins" the entire game. And that's not something that Aikman, Romo, or Johnston do with the Cowboys during their games. It was really unprofessional. And I still get irked about the network refusing to allow Vermeil to broadcast Eagles games after he retired from coaching. That was actually a "thing" back then. They were worried about him showing any favoritism. And yet for the second time in three weeks (Mark Sanchez being the first), we had to endure a broadcast where it was blatantly obvious that that was happening.

* The D'Andre Swift touchdown after the two minute warning was infuriating. Get the first down, go to the ground, and it's all over. Everyone goes home happy. Instead, you pad your stats but also force your special teams to have to run down the field and cover a kick, you force your defense to go back on the field (and ultimately ruin their stats for the game), and you actually put your special teams into the enviable task of having to recover an onside kick. That was insanely selfish on his part, and I think the coaches bear some of the blame on that.

* Imagine how much better we would be feeling right now if we had scored touchdowns on the drives where we fumbled inside the five yard line and didn't give up those ridiculous drives in the last minute of each half. It could have been a 50-20 type game. Yeah, woulda coulda shoulda. I get it.

* John Madden noted early on in his broadcasting career that one of the reasons he quit coaching was because of how gutting the losses were. You'd lose a game and you'd feel devastated. Yet when you won a game, you didn't feel an equal amount of joy. Because of that, I try to make a point of feeling decidedly happy when we win a game in which we screwed up and screwed up and yet still somehow managed to win. So that's what I'm trying to do right now. Feel happy about the result even though there was a lot of things that didn't go well.

* Random thought referencing a previous comment. The last play of the 49ers game was interesting. The Niners had a big gain as time expired but they were penalized for something back at the line of scrimmage. The referee simply said "penalty declined, game over". But if you're the Bengals why would you decline the penalty? You just added negative stats to your stat sheet. Why couldn't they say "yeah, we'll accept the penalty and since the game ends on an offensive penalty, the game is over anyway"? It feels to me like the referee simply wanted to get off the field and made the choice for them. That feels...wrong.

Yup

@mattwill Eagles win 31-20

Bonus: AJ + Smith combine for 250 receiving yards

Such a boneheaded play. All I could think about after was someone on the defense going down with an unnecessary injury. And you have guys like Blankenship out there who are already playing banged up with his ribs. He didn’t need anymore snaps. Like you said, go down and end the game.

Would like to see Steen get the start over Opeta, Opeta isnt bad in a pinch as a backup, but as a starter he's rough...

Was the last time we beat Dak our SB year?

Jurgens is eligible to come back for this week, and reports were that he looked to be ready. Hopefully he is.
