When it comes to football lore, few moments in National Football League history are so significant that they earn a specific nickname. One such bizarre play in a game between the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders in 1978 was just that and today is simply referred to as the "Holy Roller.”

Casper_Dave_150-188

Dave Casper

Ten seconds remained in the Week 2 match up at San Diego on September 10, 1978, when Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler dropped back to pass from the 14-yard-line. Chargers defensive end Fred Dean broke through the line and hit Stabler. Realizing there was nothing else he could do as the seconds ticked away, "The Snake” hurled the ball forward. As the ball rolled loose on the ground, Raiders running back Pete Banaszak swatted it toward the end zone. Tight end Dave Casper continued the ball’s forward motion with a kick at the five yard line and then fell on in it in the end zone for a touchdown as the clock ran out.

"I fumbled it on purpose,” Stabler admitted honestly after the game. "Yes, I was trying to fumble.”

Despite a protest from the Chargers sideline, referee Jerry Markbreit ruled it a legal play. Kicker Errol Mann added the extra point and the Raiders won the game, 21-20.

Markbreit’s decision to uphold the play was absolutely correct by the rules in place at the time. However, that would soon change. During the off-season, the league added a provision to the rule book about fumbles after the two-minute warning that allows only the player who fumbled the ball to advance it. As such, the rule change implemented will forever prevent the "Holy Roller” from happening again. https://www.profootballhof.com/news/2017/12/news-the-holy-roller/

No, you're thinking of an entirely different rule where the offense can't advance a fumble in the last minutes of a half/game. The post you quoted wasn't referring to advancing a fumble, it was referring to awarding a touchback to the defense on a fumble through the end zone. The Holy Roller had nothing to do with touchbacks as the offense recovered the fumble before it bounced through the end zone.

2023 Eagles passing defense:

Passing TDs: 30th

Passing yards: 27th

INTS: 31st

Passing 1st downs: 32nd

2014 (Bradley Fletcher & Cary Williams)

Passing TDs: 29th:

Passing yards: 30th

INTS: 22nd

Passing 1st downs: 28th

I'm not sure everyone recognizes how bad the pass defense is.

Are you sure about that? I think it predates Stabler altogether.

Yes.  The rule predates Stabler.  The "Holy Roller" brought us the forward fumble rule with less than two minutes left in the game.  Stabler's 'fumble' was well outside the endzone.  The Raider RB whose name I can't recall then 'fumbled' it even closer to the goal line.  And then Casper pushed it forward a few yards into the endzone before falling on it for the game winning TD.

Why? You made allegations that he didn't cover anyone and any tackles were 5-10 yards downfield. A quick peek suggests otherwise. Feel free to list his errors. I'm not suggesting for a moment he didn't make any, just that he wasn't the disaster you're making him out to be.

Didn't say any I said most.

I'm not going to go back and watch and chart his plays

You cherry picked 9 plays to support your assertion and left out the 40+ others

I agree though the snaps you posted show that he wasn't a total disaster.

It far from concludes he played well.

I hope Dean succeeds, he's a hard worker and a smart high character dude, I'm just not a fan of his skill set at LB

It's amazing the team has the best record in the league but the defense stinks, the OC is the worst ever and the QB is a turnover machine.

There’s no way the Eagles pass D could have been that bad with Malcolm Jenkins in his prime….

The OC and QB are adjusting to each other but are fine, the DL is stacked, the LBs are "fine," and the secondary is hideous.

Jenkins, despite  being a first round CB, was never awesome in coverage.  He excelled in the box, was a vocal leader on defense, and his utilization ranged from LB to slot CB pressing WRs.  That was his value.  As a pure cover safety...I don't think he was that special.  2014 was Jenkins first year here anyway, probably not his best.  I included it because it was the last year of the infamous Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher.

Right, these are two different rules related to fumbling near the opposing team's end zone. One has to do with the offense trying to "advance" the fumble, and if "caught" trying to do so, the punishment is merely returning the ball to the spot of the fumble. The other has to do with the offense fumbling the ball through the endzone, and neither team gaining possession before it bounces through the end zone, which the punishment is awarding the defense the ball and a touchback just as if it were intercepted. This rule has been in the books for over a century. JR confused the former for the latter.

Before passing was figured out - forward fumbling had big play potential.

There have been games where the defense played well enough to bail out the offense at times, and games where the offense did the same for the defense (like we just saw.) This happened quite a bit last year too and is indicative of overall solid teamwork in just finding a way to win every week, if you can pardon the cliche. Though I'm more optimistic on the offense so far this year, compared to last year, since it seems to have held up its end of the bargain a bit better through the first half of the season.

So Jalen Carter was to have an MRI this am....  anyone else thinking since we have not heard the outcome of the yet, that its bad, Like really bad?

and Howie has been on the phone trying to find a dt?

Yes, and as mentioned, forward fumbling was addressed with the holy roller rule. The offense doesn't even get called for a flag in those cases, it's just the next snap taken at the spot of the fumble.

Leaving SF for dead is as premature as everyone anointing them the greatest team in NFL history.  That's a good team that I still view as our biggest threat in the NFC.

Agree they are a good team but I think Brock Purdy is as overrated as they come. He's the Travis Fulgham of QBs. Everyone was/is ready to crown him as the next Tom Brady and I just don't think he's that guy. He's surrounded by supreme talent. SF is good and is going to be a threat but I don't think they are better than the Eagles and I don't think Purdy is a SB caliber QB. No one should be writing them off as dead that's for sure.

Sirianni confirmed the Gainwell, thing was real and talked to him about it.

I would like it a lot. Of course, our luck, his injury history comes back to get us.

Still want DE and RB2.

I can't believe professional athletes let trolling on social media get to them. Really hope we see more touches from Scott. I was a Gainwell fan as a change of pace back, but outside a few 3rd down conversions, he hasn't done much this season.

I remain completely sold on the idea of Hunter although I know it won't happen.
