I know we have a game today but I have to say something about the 6ers. And these early games suck so its a fine time for a 6ers post in the blog.

 

I know a lot of people are tuned out right now because the summer acquisition period was not exciting. And people assumed its a re-set year.

Then the Phillies made their run and nobody cared about basketball starting. But now the phillies are over and not everyone realizes yet that this 6ers team is worth watching.

This 6ers team is a ton of fun.

They are a top 5 defense and a top 5 offense so far. And they are taking pride in their defense. Embiid is giving a TON of energy on the defensive side of the ball running from under the basket to close out on 3 point shooters. Youd never see that before. 

They have also improved their offensive rebounding significantly. They are simultaneously one of the better rebounding teams while also being a top 2 team in fast break points. Impressive to be able to combine those styles. Nurse has these guys going all out.

They havent lost since opening night (1 point loss to the Bucks with crooked refs and rust at the FT line). They are not playing down to lesser competition (previous teams would drop the game against the Suns on a weekend afternoon with no Beal or Booker).

Oubre who is known as a me first player who is a streaky and inefficient shooter signed here and said hes not here to fit in, hes here to stand out. Now, all you do is hear him gush about his teammates, and coach. He accepted his bench role, on a veteran minimum salary, and he is certainly standing out. 

We have the first team in history with 4 players averaging 20+ points through 5 games. Embiid is averaging 7 assists per game, and the scoring is beautifully balanced throughout the lineup.

Pat Bev is a notorious knucklehead known to say controversial things just to ruffle feathers. But his defense and work ethic is made for philly. We got him way late in his career, but hes not washed yet. Enjoy him while you can.

Aside from the on court entertainment they are providing, you have the Pat Bev podcast, and Paul Reed has created a pod cast. If you mean they love that they are getting to see it... then I agree.  If they love that he's going to get an opportunity to become tougher through this, you are likely right.  But how will they know he actually grows from this? 

This is a massive red flag for me.  

It can mean many things,but something a good scouting staff will ask him about.  The answer could win you friends or  put people off entirely.

Regardless, asking for a stake in a multi-billion  $ company is arrogant and I'd guess, an issue for the NFL from a governance perspective.

I'm with you on this. The Nick Nurse appointment is hugely brushed under the rug by the rest of the league. He is the single most important NBA acquisition move by any org this offseason. Kelly Oubre looks like he already deserves a max. Meanwhile we have Tobi playing like he ought to in a contract year and Tyrese picking things up, just need consistency from him and Harris. Sixers are probably one or two depth pieces away from competing with Boston, and definitely with Milwaukee who already look imbalanced without Jrue.

Boston losing Smart and Grant Williams is pretty significant. Their starting 5 is great, but they suffer from the issue that plagued the 6ers for the last how many years. That bench doesnt look very good. Porzingis will be injured by playoffs. Horford is another year older. That team is not as good as last year.

Milwaukee has Lillard who is on the downside. He looks like he will have a big game every once in a while, and be very off on many other nights. Also a massive defensive downgrade. Middleton will be injured by playoff time. Lopez is another year older. That team is not as good as last year. 

Both should have been ranked well ahead of the 6ers pre-season. But now.... I cant wait to see the 6ers play boston and see how they match up. 6ers are suddenly deep, with experienced wing talent who have all been known as defenders in their career. Pat Bev bothered Durant last night for 12 minutes. Oubre is a defender. Covington, Morris, and Batum can pitch in defensively. Paul Reed is a switchable defender. This team is going to sneak up on a lot of people.

And if they play the likes of Boston, Denver, etc and think they dont match up- now they have a pile of assets to bring in more help. Im not even sure they need it right now.
