If you think the next contract will be a doozy, it might make more sense to keep him for a year and then play the comp pick game. That way you get value at both ends.

That's a good point too. I think the bigger picture is that I don't think we should count on Milton Williams being here long term. Hopefully he takes full advantage of playing with the talent around him and becomes a disruptive player while he's an Eagle though.

In regards to the fourth down, it seems like Hurts decided he was going to Smith no matter what because it was single coverage. Presnap, however, wouldn’t Gonzalez cheating that far inside tell Hurts to look elsewhere? It certainly didn’t help that Smith ran a Reagor-like slant route.

Gonzalez also with a blatant hook that the refs ignored...

From the various clips of the O, you can see how frustrated the TEs are with the lack of ball going their way; can't say I blame them and I wonder if this will be a point of emphasis for the Vikings  this week.

The comp pick game is only in play if you aren't nullifying that pick with a signing of your own. It's not a guarantee you'll get a pick. That's why sometimes you'll see teams trade a player like that (i.e. CJGJ) for a lower pick than their projected future comp value.

All this talk about Swift and Penny needing lighter workloads to keep them healthy and Gainwell is hurt after just 18 touches. He's not a lead back. He should never come close to 18 touches (nearly 35% of the offense). Hopefully there's a heavy does of Swift and Penny tomorrow night and the Eagles realize who needs to be getting the bulk.

why are those 2 dudes covered in custard?

If Bradberry was essentially your backup slot and he can't go then Goodrich has to be active, right?

Can he play linebacker? Maybe he’s a speedy, high-motor guy. Definitely has the killer instinct.

@mattwill

The Eagles are far from having things figured out. I am hoping I am wrong.

Just a tinfoil conspiracy theory here, but i think the plan was always to not play penny on Sunday with the short turnaround. Knowing his injury history/durability concerns and how he hasn’t held up in the past. the fact he doesn’t play special teams made it easier to have him inactive when swift and gainwell were healthy and active. Imo and others can disagree I think the plan was always to give gainwell the heavy workload in New England and a lightened workload for swift. I don’t think they planned for it to be 2 touches. That just played out poorly. I think they likely wanted more like 8-12 touches. So that on Thursday night swift and penny would be fresh and they’d potentially have gainwell inactive or give him a reduced role.

Don’t get me wrong. I think the coaches really like Gainwell and he knows the offense the best as he’s been here the previous two seasons. So they are comfortable with him. But I think they’re trying to manage the miles on each of these backs knowing if they can get all 3 healthy into the stretch run and playoffs it makes them more dangerous. I think the last 7 games in 2022 (including playoffs) where Miles Sanders didn’t look as good as the first 13 games isn’t lost on the coaches. Sanders in his last 7 games only rushed for over 4.0 yards per carry in 2 of the 7 games. Over that stretch he was averaging 3.87 yards per carry. Really the game he looked like himself was the divisional round game after the bye week where he rushed 17 times for 90 yards. He was averaging just 3.55 yards per carry in the other 6 games down the stretch. Either way both of those were significant drop offs from his 5.24 yards per carry in the 13 games prior.

I don't give them that much credit.  I think while the team is healthy the don't want to activate 4 backs so one has to sit.  Obviously they barely used 2 of the 3 active so from a numbers standpoint it makes sense. I do think they planned to use Swift more

I think it's a figure of speech about not just surrendering leadership but surrendering leadership to people meant to be controlled.  It's at the very least an antiquated view of best business practices. It's not as if players are not interested in the success of the NFL and teams.

I believe the original was "lunatics taking over the asylum”.   As "lunatics” fell out of favor, it morphed to "inmates” and to more modern language with the term "running”.   Sort of reminiscent of the French film King of Hearts.

Ok.  So you want to make it a conspiracy.

No.

I am not making it anything. This is literally what happened. You can ascribe whatever motivation you want to the NFL’s decision. I’m not doing that. I’m just telling you what actually happened.

The NFL decided to water the field, cover it in a tarp to protect it from rehearsals, and then install it in the dome on the Wednesday before the Super Bowl. The field didn’t have a chance to dry because it was taken out of the sun and the tarp trapped the moisture , which actually caused the field to begin to rot.

This was all done against the advice of "the sod father” who, if you read the article I posted, quit in disgust and very publicly stated he was sick of the NFL disregarding what he said.

First 15 plays are usually scripted no? 75% of the first drive was Kenny Gainwell. 6 runs and 2 catches. Hell, the first FIVE plays were all KG. They went in to the game knowing they were giving KG the bulk so I don't buy the whole "Swift having only 2 touches is unacceptable".

I think they planned on using swift more. I think they likely thought somewhere between 6-10 touches and it kind of got away from them though. I do think the eagles know swift and penny both have had durability issues since coming into the league. So that quick turnaround i do think played a part in their thinking as well. If both swift and penny stayed healthy over their careers, i wouldnt say that.

Additionally back in 2019, goedert and alshon were held out of Sunday games when they had Thursday night game that week. Doug alluded to the Thursday game being a reason they didn’t have them go in the Sunday game and both played on Thursday. That wasn’t just a doug decision. So i don’t think that’s out of the realm that the eagles would try to limit the touches for swift and hold out penny due to his durability concerns (along with they have an easy out in doing so saying can’t have 3 backs active who don’t play ST)

Surprised they didn't kill him on sight, TBH.  Apparently they had the latitude to do so.  He's just a waste of the food and shelter they need to provide him now.

I think swift was always going to be on a limited amount of touches with a game 4 days later due to his injury/durability in the past. I also think they believed he’d likely be closer to the 6-10 touches range rather than two.

I would have to watch the all 22 from that game. But I’m guessing the running backs in pass protection weren’t very good. This has been a problem since Jordan Howard was here in 2019. The RBs don’t pass protect/ blitz pick up very well. I think it’s part of the reason why Solak and sheil continuously talked about during the offseason the area hurts and the offense had to get better at was vs. the blitz

I think the perfect example of the idiom is what you currently have with the NBA. It's turned into a player-centric league where you have situations like what is going on with Harden right now, Durant wanting to get traded every six months, Kyrie Irving going off the grid, or Simmons before holding a team hostage. And where you have guys sitting out half the regular season games for load-management that has led to a deteriorating product. Adam Silver gets walked on by the players, while his predecessor in Stern wouldn't put up with it. I'm all for players having more of a say, but the NBA has gone overboard with it.

Harden wants Morey fired and frankly so do most Sixer fans.  So who are the lunatics (original idiom term) here, the player or Harris and Morey?  While not liking Harden’s approach, the term arguably fits the latter better.

Listening to Rick Spielman last night on NFL Radio doing a preview of the Eagles-Vikings game, he was surprised Penny was not active for Week 1.  He said their RB room lacks guys who can get the tough yards, and they should be "running Penny until he gets hurt"

How soon people forget Gainwell's post-season performance.
