He's got a reallly cool backstory too.

Agreed. It may not happen immediately, due to timing. But they are doing their thorough DD, as they should.

Awesome indeed, and smart.

The problem with that weak spot is that there is a coterie that has said, over and over, anyone but Siposs. Well, they've run - what? - half a dozen or so punters through, all of whom are not Siposs, so they are clearly looking to upgrade the position. @FranklinFldEBUpper has never said he would not like an upgrade from Siposs, quite the contrary, but he has posted rationally, with data to support it, that Siposs is not a disaster. He's mediocre but he's not shanking punts left and right as some allege. Franklin has also given good reasons why the Punt God is still unemployed, most particularly at least to me, regarding the snap to toe time, which translates to blocked punts.

I'm personally in favor of upgrading everywhere, but only with a better player, not another journeyman, and not just anyone.

Change for the sake of change rarely works for the better, or even for the status quo.  It almost always results in a backfire.   And frankly, the loud group outraged that Siposs is still with the team falls under the clanging cymbol contingent that anyone else must be better.  The Eagles clearly do not share that view, while at the same time, they are, in fact, looking to find an upgrade.

Braden smith is interesting. Was a solid starter for the colts a few years back. Didn’t stay healthy til last year. His pff grades the last 3 years have been  80.1, 80.6 and 75.5.

Different Braden Smith who is OL. Drafted in 2022.

Game day inactives? I believe we can dress 48 guys so long as one is an eighth offensive lineman and one is a third quarterback. Since you need one spot for a *holder* and another spot for a punt returner to account for two elevations off the practice squad, that leaves you with seven guys on the roster who will not be in uniform on Sunday.

Here’s what I’m thinking. Last year we routinely dressed three running backs, so that may be the preference this year as well. That might leave Penny and Scott in a battle for the last spot. Since Scott is the presumed kick returner, that would give him an edge. So that leaves Penny as the first candidate.

They definitely won’t dress four tight ends, so I think O is a lock to be inactive. Calcaterra is another candidate too of course but I suspect they’d prefer to dress him.

They will certainly inactivate a backup offensive lineman, and I have a hunch it’ll be Steen despite his recent draft pedigree. Not ready yet. Nothing wrong with giving him the experience of watching from the sideline early in the year. Opeta has played in games before and is probably more dependable at this point in time. And they seem to like Johnson.

So that’s three on offense. Penny, O, and Steen. Though Penny is far from a certainty. That leaves four on defense, five if you want Penny in uniform.

We only have three defensive ends, so they all dress. That leaves you with six defensive tackles. Street and Tui are the obvious two. I’ll say both at this point, but they may not want to go that thin. But it’s a numbers game and you have to find places to go light.

We only really have three traditional linebackers (Dean, Elliss, and Cunningham) so they’ll all dress. Do you dress all three edge rusher slash linebackers? Reddick obviously plays, so do you inactivate P Johnson or Nolan Smith? You’d think they would prefer Smith to play, so Johnson would be the obvious choice. But it’s plausible they might give Smith another week to get right. Still, I would predict Johnson sits.

That leaves one more inactivation in the secondary. I think all four safeties dress, so one of the three deep reserves at corner sit. So which of Ringo, Ricks, and Goodrich sit? I guess it’s Ringo and Ricks who play while Goodrich sits. But maybe they play Penny and sit Ringo or Ricks.

It’s not necessarily clear cut, and it’s obvious that these are tough decisions. I guess I’ll go with Penny, O, Steen, Street, Tui, P Johnson, and Goodrich. And I also think it’s 50-50 they activate Ward over Covey this week. They might do neither while clearing a uniform for Penny and asking Zaccheaus or Jobe to return punts.

Gilliken. From Penn State. Stronger leg, which is a must here in an upgrade. Has more growth potential and younger.  Nice rookie year and so so 2nd year.

...

He only holds a spot on PS right now as a matter of convenience for Howie to have a punter there. And holding Elliott's balls oh so flirtatiously.

The Eagles brought him in for a work out.  They know about him.  And yet they haven't pulled the trigger on him yet.  Interesting, no?

As for the last sentence, continually putting this type of commentary in your posts makes reading the rest of what you have to say much less interesting.  Your points would carry more weight without the middle school level commentary constantly being bandied about.

Umm. They are still looking at everyone. Doesn't mean Siposs doesn't still suck. Cuz they haven't pulled the trigger. Yet!

"Stat nerds”.  If that is directed at @FranklinFldEBUpper, that’s absurd.  He literally times the kicks himself.  That’s watching and he is observing the opponents punter too.  His recall of plays in Eagles games is phenomenal.   Try timing speed of snap to kick or hang time.  Ain’t easy.

What available punter, obviously relying on your watching all of that punter’s kicks are you proposing as a replacement. Even Kempski has struggled there, basically pointing out that the available punters are worse or no better than Sisposs, who at least is a trusted holder for Elliott.  Heck, they had the punter I wanted to pick up as an UDFA when they lost Johnston in for two tryouts last year and ended up signing Kern.  So conditioned on you having watched the player’s punting, not just highlights, who are you proposing?

I can confirm this. In cases where @FranklinFldEBUpper couldn’t clock the exact hangtime or spot where a kick  landed he would occasionally reach out to me for a second opinion, based on my all-22 view. He wants to get it right and I would do my best, but he was much better and would guide me when I was off and he could prove it. I know a few people like this but they’re Civil War historians. He’s a unique treasure and demanding of respect. Dismissing him as a stat nerd is stupid, ignorant, and insulting.

Yes, they are looking.  But they sure aren't thinking along with your "anyone" category that you've thrown around.  They want a clear upgrade.  Their hair isn't on fire about it, and frankly, neither should yours be.   That is all.  I'll leave the last word to you.

If we start with a roster of 54 (53 plus a Siposs elevation) that means we need to inactivate 6 to get to 48.  Here is my first pass at 6

Tanner McKee
Albert O
Sua Opeta (Steen and Fred Johnson are active)
Moro Ojomo
two from Eli Ricks, Mario Goodrich, Kelee Ringo, and Justin Evans

McKee will dress as the 3rd QB.  Makes no sense not to dress him with the new rule.

There are plenty of punters out there right now who may be  better. But just need an opportunity. Siposs has the edge because he is already here and trained and has a rapport. Doesn't necessarily mean he is better. But, with Mann and Gilliken it is a little more focused to young vets and in NFL camps recently. I like a few younger guys too. But a team with Superbowl aspirations won't go there. Like with Turk, Korsak and a few others. But there's no denying Siposs is bottom 5 punter in most rankings, so why settle? Don't get it....

I would think he would play special teams.

I would think that backups who don't play special teams are less likely to be active.

The Eagles have put the current 53 together based on who they think other teams would take if they tried to put them on practice squad.   How many DTs, of the current 7,  will be inactive?  Of the many CBs,  7,  who won't be playing CB and who won't be playing special teams?  It was pretty common for the Eagles last year to play the starting CBs all game, or, in the case of the nickel, he'd be the only nickel.  3 corners play,  4 corners don't, except for the cbs who are playing special teams.  I think Ringo plays special teams, so I would think it less likely that he be inactive.  I would think Ricks inactive unless he does special teams.

Again, the Eagles are holding on to players they don't need right now, probably because they think it's harder to find good players they like at those positions.  Or they think other teams would take those players.  But the Eagles are heavy at DT and CB.  They don't need them right now and 3rd string DTs rarely play special teams.

I don't believe the 3rd QB has to be one of the 46/48 actives.

A club must have two bona fide quarterbacks on its 47/48-player game day active list to designate an Emergency Third Quarterback. A club cannot designate an Emergency Third Quarterback if it has three or more bona fide quarterbacks on its 47/48-player game day active list.

The 3rd QB doesn't... but he will dress.  So, while not 'active'... he's active.  So, we are in agreement... but speaking of different things.
