Quez has 2 catches and a bum hammy and Oz hasn't been targeted yet. Goedert averaged something like 3 yards per catch against the Vikings. Before we start looking at using draft capital on another WR, Brian Johnson needs to figure out how to call a game. Goedert was wide open deep a few times against NE but instead of trying to do that again, they threw him garbage that had no chance in developing and at the wrong time. The TE screen they called for him was so poorly executed.

Let's get the ball to AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert consistently with some Swift, OZ and Watkins mixed in before we start thinking about draft pick rentals. I also don't trust Howie's trade deadline moves anymore. He's improved in so many areas across the board but his deadline moves have been total wastes of picks.

On another note, I really hope Albert O is active this week. Stoll and Calcaterra aren't even jags right now. They need to upgrade TE2/3 is huge.

OZ was actually doing some decent blocking last Thursday.  On one Tush Push, he reaches down to offer help getting back up to Mailata but the camera cuts away before we get to see the result. His routes look okay.

I really hope the Eagles don't overthink the hot hand at RB thing. Swift shouldn't be getting as many carries as he had against the Vikings but he should be THE guy. Then you use Boston Scott and Kenny Gainwell situationally. The coaches literally said they forgot about Swift against NE. If they think Gainwell was hot against NE and that caused them to forget about Swift, that scares the hell out of me. I don't trust them to do the right thing with the RB rotation, that's for sure.

IMO, it should be Swift on 1st/2nd down + Kenny on 3rd down. Kenny is the most reliable blocker/receiver in the group. Kenny also will get the 2 minute drills as he knows the offense the best. That's still a 60-40 split for Swift which should be the goal.

Gainwell would have had a huge night as well. I think I saw that Swift had like 130 yards before contact.  We need to keep he and Swift in the mix together.

Gainwell is Smallwood.  Not very good.  But finishes runs physically despite smaller stature. You inexplicably liked Smallwood, not surprising you like Gainwell.  He's not very good though.

Gainwell is much better than Smallwood was. No idea why people are hating on him with the postseason he had, and he ran well in week 1 with basically no blocking

You inexplicably thought Miles Sanders was better than Gainwell, laughable.

He’s back.  Eagle depth at slot.  Note he keeps getting bounced but Garner stays.  I am not convinced Garner has the quickness for slot.  But Mullen is another lightweight short corner.  Not sure that solves the TE issue.

The situation will sort itself out. Gainwell proved his worth late last season. Swift was given his first chance here to do so in the last game. It's hard to ignore the spark that Swift provided the offense and the O-line played better as they fed him the ball. I would imagine Gainwell will be given more time to fully heal while the Eagles continue to ride the hot hand. If the situation plays out like the last game, defenses will have to start accounting for Swift and he will further his case for remaining RB1.

Comparing Smallwood to Gainwell is one of the most disrespectful comparisons in the history of the EMB. 😭

And guess what?  For all the Banner hate and the purely name recognition single pro bowl he went to, Dawkins wasn’t very good in Denver.  He got paid more than he was worth.

I’m always pissed at everyone and I’m not mad at anyone over the Dawk situation.

He made second team all-pro there

I worry the overemphasis on Swift’s performance.  He was 28 for 175 for a 6.2 yard per carry average against the Vikings. Scott was 5 for 40 for an 8 yard per carry average.  Against that Vikings front with the spy held by Hurts on the RPO, any of the three top backs could have run for a six yard average.  Both were 1 for 3 yards against the Patriots.  Gainwell had a 3.9 yard average on 14 carries against the Pats.  Bucs D is closer to the Pats than the Vikings.

I think safety is a bigger concern than linebacker. Not that i don’t think linebacker is a concern. It is but i think the eagles value linebacker far less and Dean returning will improve the position.

At safety, Evans is not good. Maybe he has upside before the injuries and early in his career but now he shouldn’t be playing significant snaps. Blankenship is already banged up and he’s never been a starter for 17 games like Dean. Edmunds is not that good either and feels very much like a backup that can give you a start or two with injuries. And brown isn’t ready to be a full time starter. And if you hope he can by midseason it’s a big risk in the heart of your schedule which is a super challenging stretch with good offenses.

Long term i think Blankenship and brown will be good but this year it’s an issue. I’d also say with maddox out (not shocking why a lot of us were against extending him) the slot corner is also an issue. I’d try to get a safety that can play some slot.

This feels like a subtle way to say Penny is a clear 4th. The rough part is I honestly don't think I disagree. lol

Swift had a really good game. He was hitting holes and showed good vision. He was not trying to keep bouncing outside and taking what the oline was giving him and finishing off runs. Some of the things that when he was with the lions he wasn’t great at and partially why the lions were willing to move on from him according to some reports before and after the trade (injuries also a big part).

That said the Vikings last year were a bottom 1/3 run defense. They weren’t good. by year’s end they might finish around the same if not worse. That defense is bad. Frankly only one who didn’t look good running in that game was penny and he might just not be the same player after the injuries or not fully healthy. I don’t love gainwell but i tend to think he likely has  success in that game like Scott and swift did.

I’m curious to see what our offense looks like vs. the Bucs. It’s a much harder opponent for our offense. I’m guessing Bowles isn’t going to just let the eagles run on him and has better personnel for whatever he schemes up. Frankly i think hurts likely has a chip on his shoulder going into this game as last time he faced Bowles it was the 2022 playoffs and it was ugly until it got out of hand. I think he wants to prove something on MNF. Not that he needs to as he got to a SB and played well in that game

Gainwell is much better than Smallwood.  Mike liked Smallwood because of his college roots.  There was a ton of excitement about Gainwell when and where he got drafted.  Personally, I like the three man committee except in Pass Pro.  How can Boston Scott be the best at Pass Pro of the four RBs?  I haven’t thrown in the towel yet on Penny but I am not sure how much longer we wait to see if he can really run anymore.

Steve Ruiz who does the QB rankings for The Ringer is such a moron.  He's on Bill Simmons' podcast today amd he just said "I'd take Geno Smith over Jalen Hurts.  They could put Tyrod in the offense and not see any drop-off."

Jalen Hurts is 19-1 in his last 20 regular season games.  Something only 5 other QBs have done.  The 3 games Jalen missed in that span the Eagles went 0-3.

Tbh the eagles RBs in pass protection haven’t been good in awhile. If you say they have been average since 2020 that would be generous. Really haven’t had a good pass pro back since 2019 when Jordan Howard was here.

I wonder if the Eagles are souring on Calcaterra and Stoll.  Calcaterra isn’t getting many offensive snaps and has underperformed on STs.  Stoll had some bad misses on blocks against the Vikings. They have Brady, a blocking TE on the PS and just tried out Jenkins, who was a blocking TE in Georgia Tech’s run heavy offense. They traded for Brooks, who was a better version of Calcaterra at Denver.

Could use another DB with Maddox out for a while. Either a true nickel, or a safety with Brown sliding down in heavy nickel packages.

One of the few options I see is signing Trey Sermon to the 53, but then do they cut Penny at that point? This is why I think they will hold onto Penny

His cost is almost nothing and right now the Eagles don't have another RB on the PS. Sermon knows the offense and would have the easiest transition, but there's got to be something they saw where they kept Penny over Sermon for final cut downs. I don't think Penny would have much of a market, so the risk of him going somewhere else is pretty slim.

@mattwill

Bucs 30

Eagles 24

Passing game hasn't shown that it can get its act together and Im going to assume the defense doesn't keep getting multiple turnovers/lucky breaks per game.

Bonus: Reddick finally gets a sack

I know it’s not Calcaterra or stoll but i wouldn’t be entirely surprised if the eagles use a pick in round 2-3 in the 2024 draft on a tight end to be groomed as an eventual replacement for goedert. Goedert has two years left on his deal after this year. When it runs out after the 2025 season he’ll be 31. He’s great when he plays (run blocking and pass catching) but has had injuries. Could see similar to ertz that they don’t think it’s a wise investment at his age and what he likely wants.
