EMB Blog: 2023 Regular Season thru Week 9 - NO POLITICS

I don't know what people were expecting.

New OC, none of the starters played in preseason.  They open the road against the greatest defensive coach ever and then 3 days of prep before the Thursday night game.  September is preseason for these guys basically and there sure wasn't that much time between the first and second game to iron some things out.  They are 2-0 and have flashed some positive signs on both sides of the ball.  Biggest worry/downside after the first two games is just the rate of injuries already.

Side note the Rashaan Evans thing was weird.  He asked to be released to pursue other ops but didn't sign anywhere else yet?  Seems weird

They look like the 2nd place team in the division and the 3rd in the conference. My expectation is to get back to the SB, not to be fat and happy about slipping by middling teams.  You seem to have a more casual approach, which is fine minus the name calling which isn’t cool.

The older I get, the more I understand the ebbs and flows of football specifically early on in the season. Do you think Bengals fans felt good last season when they started 0-2 before they made the AFC title game? Do you think Chiefs fans feel good now being 1-1? Do you think Bills fans feel good after losing to Zach Wilson? What about Chargers fans being 0-2 right now with deep playoff run hopes?

This isn’t college football where you open up 2-0 against fluffers like Middle Tennessee St and Ball St and win 62-7 each game.

Who’s the dominant team in the AFC right now? Miami because they beat an 0-2 Chargers and grinding out a one possession win against a middling team (your words) New England?

What about the NFC? San Fran for beating Pittsburgh and the Giants? Dallas for beating the Giants and Zach Wilson?

We’re two weeks in. If a month goes by and they’re 4-3, it might be time for concern. It’s a journey not a sprint.

Way too early to say what they look like.  Same goes for DAL and SF.  It’s very possible the Eagles start 6-0 without playing their best football.  MIA will be the first severe test of Desai’s defense, and it’s unlikely the Dolphins will be around when the AFC playoffs are done.

Health will determine a lot.  Hopefully when Dean comes off IR he can stay healthy, and hopefully Maddox will be the only long term injury to the secondary

They look just like they looked at the same point last year. Relax.

Eagles: 38

Bucs: 17

Bonus: Eagles get at least 4 sacks.

3-0 would be nice, but the point differential is telling a story.

I think the point differential does tell a big story.  Most of the deep running playoff teams rank high in that category.  But it is also still too early to look at that stat.  Dallas is on pace for +510, but I bet they don’t beat SF’s +173 from last year come year’s end.  They were +125 last year with wins of 40-3 and 54-19.

That stat usually tells a story each year…but not until much later in the season.

This is sort of what I meant by PD not really being important in September…probably not really all that important in October either.  The most successful teams get better as the season goes on.

SF was +11 after 2 games last year.  They ended up leading in PD for the season.  Eagles are +11 now

The Bills started hot last year and were +55 after 2 weeks.  They ended up in 2nd with +169, but were clearly a team that faded down the stretch

Howie & co should stop horsing around with the LB position and go get Zaire Franklin. Contract is team friendly and he's signed through next year. Basically fixes the revolving door there and gives us continuity, experience, plus quality & reliable play, god forbid. In turn it lets Desai work on other issues rather than constantly playing f'n games with LB which has been going on for years, literally. Probably only 1% chance of happening but they really should.

As much as Baker would be a nice get at S his contract demands aren't in line with what we would want to do there, especially with all of the extensions looming. I can't see it but you never know, there has been some smoke there. I also saw Jalen Thomson mentioned, he already signed an extension last off-season but maybe you can nab him and Howie can put on his restructuring gloves and make it more team friendly. He can play slot and S at a high level. He would not block Brown either. Seems like he would be more of a fit than Chinn, who may be best in the box. I am a fan of his as well but I think Thompson is the better coverage player which is more of what we need considering the Maddox injury.

Your next Howie special at RB. Very good RB coming off an injury for the draft next year. Bet on him being an Eagle.

Last year at this time, they just came off a laugher against MIN in which Swag looked great.

Alright, for the people who are jumping off the Walt Whitman which I don't think there are any, except for the straw men that I seem to be lumped in with - the SB isn't played in SEPT, so you don't want to peak in SEPT, good teams with some injury luck improve over the course of the season and are hopefully playing their best ball at the end of it.  This is fairly obvious to most people, but we addressing an imaginary segment of the fanbase who would rank the Eagles with NYG or CAR.

My response for the don't-worry-be-happy folks is let's get an efficient passing performance out the QB and good play out this back-7 so this DL can eat... then the gripes will go away.

JK Dobbins is also on that list.

Do we think the days of taking a RB in the 2nd round are over here, as it is cheaper in draft resources to flip a 4th every year for a known commodity rather than making the relatively large down payment for say Blake Corum?

I hope the days of considering a potentially elite RB in round 2 aren't completely finished, but I do think it's definitely further down the ol' totem pole now than what it was when we drafted Sanders.

Yup, I'm with you - it would be sad to pass on say Shady as matter of doctrine.

It's pretty common knowledge about the ish on the streets and the rampant issue it's became.  If you don't know you live under a rock.

That’s a price of people living where there aren’t bathrooms.  Becoming an issue on the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail.  It is an issue on Everest. Solution might be self cleaning toilets.  Suggestion is that it may be less expensive to offer shelter.  Supposedly, from some experiences, homeless given shelter were more likely to get jobs and treatments they might need.  In SF, NYC etc., affordable housing is a huge issue.

I think they are 3rd best team in the conference - obviously I'm hysterical.

Interesting take.  What was/is your assessment of Nicholas Morrow’s performance on Thursday?

For the most part, yes… But they should give a chunk of their extension $ to Purdy

They will if he performs well enough this year. They have an excuse not to do so because they haven't seen him for a whole year yet. He takes some big hits so I'm curious if he'll make it through a full 17 and playoffs. I'm sure they are curious too before dropping a big contract on him.
