Can’t start wheeled game 1 cause he would be on short rest. Normal rest would be Sunday. Plus you’d get him game 2 and 5. Really the Phillies just need to split in atlanta. Suarez has been better on the road than at home. 2.75 ERA on the road and 5+ at home. So i trust Suarez in that situation. He tends to show up in bigger games/moments. Nola is pitching game 3. His era is the opposite of Suarez. His is really good at home and bad on the road.

So, what defines "normal rest" ... how many days on the calendar since the prior start?  I've modified the game schedule below to match your thinking.  Who starts game 4?

Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies

  • Game 1: Phillies at Braves, 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 7 (TBS) Ranger starts

  • Game 2: Phillies at Braves, 6 p.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 9 (TBS) Wheeler starts -- 6 days since he pitched on Tuesday, October 3

  • Game 3: Braves at Phillies, Wednesday, Oct. 11 (TBS) Nola starts - 7 days since he pitched on Wednesday, October 4

  • Game 4*: Braves at Phillies, Thursday, Oct. 12 (TBS) ?? starts - 5 days since Ranger pitched on Saturday, October 7

  • Game 5*: Phillies at Braves, Saturday, Oct. 14 (TBS) Wheeler starts -- 5 days since he pitched on Monday, October 9

That was why I had Ranger pitching game two ... on the road ... and Nola pitching game three.  I wasn't sure whether Wheeler would be on short rest if he pitched game one.  I was hoping for two games out of both Wheeler and Nola.

Thanks for your input.

We don't need guys on short rest.  That's a desperation move.  The Phillies aren't in desperation.  The most interesting question I have is who do they throw in Game 4, Walker or Sanchez... or both?

As @e-a-g-l-e-s eagles! says... the Phillies just need one game in Atlanta.  And, frankly, I think they win both games (if required) in Philly.  The Braves are a really, really good team, but this Phillies team, as with last year's group does seem to actually be able to dial it up to 11.  In the Marlins series they were around a 9... maybe 9.5.   I look forward to them raising their bar in this series.   Realmuto on the road...  I can't wait to see it!!!

Normal rest is 4 days off between starts. Basically every 5th day. If he pitched game one it would be 3 days off between.

I’m guessing it’s Sanchez piggybacked by lorenzen or walker piggybacked by lorenzen. I think they use lorenzen out of the pen cause he’s been a RP before this year

Understood, but numbers are numbers and yards are yards.

BTW, do you have a score prediction for Sunday's game?

Some numbers are also letters..... like π and e.  And don't get me started on Roman numerals... SB "LII" 4ever!!!

Same question to you as I posed to @e-a-g-l-e-s eagles! what do you consider to be short rest? I always thought normal rest was 4 days, which woulds seem to make the interval from Tuesday October 3 to Saturday October 7 normal rest (7 minus 3 is 4)  But I admit to being a total novice on what the standards for rest are.

EDIT: I looked up Warren Spahn and he had between 39 and 35 starts in a 154 game season which typically started on or about April 18 and ended on or about October 7 (173 calendar days) 35 makes it easy to calculate ... almost exactly a start every 5 calendar days.  Is that close to the current standard?

So far I have predictions from the following.  If you don't see your name there you don't as yet have a prediction recorded

Three days rest was normal in Spahn’s days. But by the late seventies or so, four days became the norm. Steve Carlton would go every fourth day but he was a rarity. Nowadays three days only happens in playoff situations when teams are desperate.

Pitching every 5th day is the standard now (so if he pitched Monday then Saturday would be the next start standard). Wheeler if he went game 1 would be on the 4th day.

4 days rest means 4 days not pitching. So if pitch Tuesday then Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday is 4 days and pitch on Sunday is 4 (I know no game Sunday but just an example)

Had to have an epidural for back pain, apparently the back pain is enough for him to miss a game.

Hopefully it's not something that affects him all year, he's benn playing really well.

Oooo this is another good one

Desai has been doing much more up front. He is also using LB's to blitz more often.  He secondary is playing like trash. He needs to move away from zone coverage to man.

I was never really worried about the d-line. But the secondary scheme, it doesn't seem to change. The soft shell that gets torched. We will see what they do against a good Rams offense but their o-line isn't great so that should help.

Uh what?

edit: just read about it, that’s one of those stupid rules just because they never thought about a better way to categorize those yards

He got an epidural. I think he’s expecting

The epidural steroid injection and Fletcher Cox situation is (obviously) worth watching.

An epidural steroid injection is meaningless.  It's a pain-killing shot.  There is no recovery or required delay for return to action.  What matters is the underlying problem.  Unless there is a neurological deficit, most back problems are just an issue of pain tolerance (it's not often you see pro athletes get shut down mid season for back issues).  Teams and athletes will often try to wait until their career is over before addressing most back problems.  Most of the surgeries are fairly invasive, involve extensive loss of core strength, and have extended limitations of weight-lifting during rehab.

Essentially, backs derail careers more often than they derail seasons...if that makes sense.

Either it's so far gone that he just can't go anymore, or Cox will likely be able to tough it out for the rest of the year after a week to rest up.
