Arizona would be insane if they’re in a position to draft Caleb Williams & pass on him to keep Murray

@mattwill

Had a thought, I wonder if Milton Williams gets traded in this upcoming off-season. With Davis & Carter looking strong enough to be future starters at DT, Williams will likely be the odd man out & will likely be a FA after next year. I can’t imagine he’ll land us any comp pick, so does Howie jump ahead of that and try to get some value from him?

I’m not sure what his draft value could be, or if it would be a player for player trade. Also not sure if Eagles want to hurt their depth with them likely losing Cox & BG this upcoming offseason.

Same question to you as I posed to @e-a-g-l-e-s eagles! what do you consider to be short rest? I always thought normal rest was 4 days, which woulds seem to make the interval from Tuesday October 3 to Saturday October 7 normal rest (7 minus 3 is 4)  But I admit to being a total novice on what the standards for rest are.

EDIT: I looked up Warren Spahn and he had between 39 and 35 starts in a 154 game season which typically started on or about April 18 and ended on or about October 7 (173 calendar days) 35 makes it easy to calculate ... almost exactly a start every 5 calendar days.  Is that close to the current standard?

Warren Spahn is a different era, way before guys were routinely throwing 90, let alone approaching triple digits.  Instead, these guys are much more used to a 5 man rotation, which means 4 days in between starts.  So, if Pitcher A pitches on Tuesday, Pitcher B throws Wednesday, C on Thursday, D on Friday, E on Saturday and A comes back around on Sunday.   But remember for a while the Phillies actually ran with a 6 man rotation.  Lengthening that timeline even more.   Obviously, now is not the time to go to that, but it wouldn't be time to go to the 'short rest' which is what would be the equivalent to a 4 man rotation would be.

So, 'normal' rest for Wheeler would be to throw on Sunday.  No game on Sunday, so the choice is short rest on Saturday, or an extra day of rest on Monday.

Normal rest was to pitch on the 4th day back when guys were throwing in the 70s (off speed) and 80s (fastballs).  That hasn't been the norm for a generation or more.  I'm not sure exactly when the switch happened... but it was a while ago.  In the early 70s, Carlton was starting every 4th game and started 41 games in 1972, 40 games in 1973 both to lead the league.  For comparison, Wheeler matched his season high in starts this year, with 32.  That's a dramatic difference from Carlton.   Warren Spahn takes you back to the 50s, but he wasn't pitching as much as Carlton.  He topped out at 39, but never approached that number again as he got into his 30s... maxing out at 36 again.  Carlton at 35 and 37 years old hit 38 starts again, which also lead the league in starts.   But, he was a freak athlete and had a freakish training regime.   I don't know if you know the story of the 50 gallon rice barrel... but it is something that defies logic.  It was Carlton's secret weapon.

4 days rest means 4 days not pitching. So if pitch Tuesday then Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday is 4 days and pitch on Sunday is 4 (I know no game Sunday but just an example)

Some teams can squeeze an extra appearance from a stud, and they can pitch and inning (sometimes two) on their 'side throw' day where they usually pitch a side session to stay loose even on the rest days.   IIRC, the Phillies used Suarez in that manner last year at least once in the playoffs last year.

I don’t think he’s going to be re-signed here and I don’t think he ideally wants to be here, but I would just keep him for the year. Realistically, I think he only would get you maybe a 4th. I see it similar to when we traded for Avery. Young guy with talent but hasn’t played a ton and is still a bit of a mystery. He’s worth more just being on the team with an expanded role (assuming Cox isn’t back) when next year we should still be competing for the NFC.

My thinking around Williams is to just keep him and let his contract expire, unless someone ponies up an offer you can't refuse. He's a good player, but as things are looking now,  you are going to want to pay Davis and Carter the big bucks on the DL. Looking at the next 3-5 years, he would easily be the 3rd DT and you can't be committing that much money to him in that role. Depth DL is so critical to this team, and that's why I think they will hold onto him and let his contract expire.

Think about it this way, the Eagles are down Cox right now and there really isn't much of a panic because of the depth and talent there right now. If Cox is gone next year, and Carter/Davis go down there isn't much to rely on. Gives more time for Ojomo to develop and/or draft some more DL.

I agree with it all, I’m not saying we should trade him. I like keeping him for depth. I’m saying that he seems like the most likely player to end up on the trade block this offseason.

*Kupp & Nakua combine for over 20 receptions. Death by the 8-15 yard reception. Eagles fight back but fall short, Goedert gets his first TD.

Nah wiliiams can also play DE. Good guy to keep as he probably wont break the bank. Can fill BGs role

Pretty cool to see this. I love when the crowd is in to it and Stott's walk up song is a huge part of it. Fantastic move to get it going again!

The 49ers media/fans are DESPERATE to show anything that makes the Eagles look bad.  This highlight has to be 5 years old.

^ That is why Trea Turner signed here.   That is why Spencer Strider said that he had the hot take that fans were unnecessary in today's baseball.  That's why it would be cheaper to fly to Atlanta today, go to Game 1 in Atlanta, and then fly back to Philly, than to get a ticket to Game 3.

That's what makes playoff baseball in Philly unlike anywhere else.

Well, that's because he hasn't done anything in the league for about 5 years, he's been too strung out on drugs.  Which is why they got him for peanuts.  Its why he slipped to Round 3.

19 sacks in 60 games... but he's been eligible to play in 102.

I might be biased but I truly think Philly has the best fans in sports. It's why I can't wait for the Flyers to be relevant again. I can't wait for a Flyers playoff atmosphere again. The Eagles fans might not get as loud as Seattle but I blame that 100% on stadium construction. The Eagles really did a disservice to a real Philly home field advantage when designing the Linc. Imagine if it was closed in. Place would be ROCKIN.

It's time to retire the Santa Claus comments. It's embarrassing to hear anyone mention it anymore. Philadelphia has the best fans around.

Devota Smith's turn to go off.  150 yds and 2 TDs.

I'm not sweating a road game in LA in week 5. If we lose, we're 4-1. The Washington game really mattered because of NFCEast tiebreakers.

I'm way more interested in seeing whether the defense learns to handle motion and bunches. That is most concerning moving forward.

And never call cover 3. We will get destroyed in that.
